Won?t last long. Diana was used by Charles to promote the positives of monarchy, look how that ended up. Divorce. These people have previous when it comes to using people to secure their situation. No doubt the publicity this wedding gives them was carefully choreographed to make them acceptable to a 21st century audience. Parasites thrive when given the conditions to do so. They will do whatever it takes to remain in their position. This wedding is a god send to them. Anyone who falls for this stuff is a moron. Louisa.

I believe in democracy. Electing a head of state, and being able to remove that head of state via a ballot box is way more important to me than individuals or personalities. The symbolism of a class structure in which power is inherited rather than earnt is disgusting to me. These people are parasites, they?ll do anything and everything to cling onto their situation. Louisa.

I think Brexit has already relegated the United Kingdom. Removing the monarchy doesn?t make a blind bit of difference. Louisa.

The light at the end of this dark tunnel of undemocratic monarchic rule for republicans, is simply the fact Charles remains next in line to the throne. And there?s no escaping that. Once the present Queen passes on, despite all the clever marketing and supposed popularity surrounding William and Harry, I cannot see how Charles will maintain the levels of popularity both his mother and sons have enjoyed, especially in the last couple of decades. I still hold out hope we will get a referendum for constitutional change at some stage. And let?s face it, no better time than when Charles takes over. Louisa.

I had to turn the radio and television OFF simultaneously just now. Most major channels are solely concentrated on this wedding. I don?t care about it, most people I know don?t care either. Why do we need so much coverage? I don?t mind one dedicated channel or station, but this really is just excessive. Louisa.

I have quite a collection of gnomes in my garden. Almost 25 years worth in fact. They?re very therapeutic. Louisa.

Alternatives to royal wedding and football

I would recommend High Elms Country Park within the M25 and near the village of Downe. Some beautiful walks, always quiet, nice pubs for lunch dotted around the area. Well worth a visit. Louisa. -
Interestingly, according to the planning site, Rye Lane?s Barclays Bank will be moving to the site tipped for a Turtle Bay restaurant/bar on the unit at the corner of Bournemouth Road/Rye Lane. This then leaves the former Barclays site at the end of the lane empty. Turtle Bay have not commented much, but I wouldn?t mind guessing they?ll aim for a change of use on this soon to be empty space, where Barclays will be moving from. Louisa.

Why don?t we campaign for a third M&S. Louisa.

Nando?s would have done well on LL around 10 years ago. More of a night life culture, younger crowd. Not so much now. Too family orientated, and Nando?s prefers the younger in/out crowd. Peckham is ideal for that, and with better rail links and a decent weekend nightlife culture, a restaurant will do marvellously down that way. I sometimes think people like to think too highly of ED. The nappy valley element which has grown over the last decade has pretty much destroyed the younger/nightlife scene that was quite evident before. The main stretch is too far from the station and other than local families, these sorts of businesses would be struggling even at weekends. Peckham doesn?t have that problem. Louisa.

Well Nando?s have now put in a planning application for signage and shop frontage change on Rye Lane, Peckham. From that I would conclude it is unlikely they?ll take on this site. Louisa.

The one positive I would take from this is that Pizza Express has not yet confirmed or denied the occupation of this space. Chain restaurants at affordable prices aren?t always a bad thing. But when a a place is saturated with the same type of offering already, it seems a pointless exercise adding to that. The one in the village is perfectly nice if you enjoy their offering, and isn?t so busy that it requires another branch so near. Louisa.

Foxy you aren?t far off from the magic 10k posts. At which point, your forum self will implode and you?ll need to do a Doctor Who and reinvent yourself. Louisa. -

I?ve posted 5,636 times across just over 11 years, registering on 26/02/2007. I do miss a lot of people, but some new people have come along and are just as entertaining. To find myself listed on a thread about long term posters makes me feel somewhat institutionalised, ?part of the furniture?, and to think I?ve always tried to stylise myself as the outsider, a working class hero battling against the gentrified forum clique. How ironic. Louisa. -
If you?re going to put a chain restaurant in this space, how about a Las Iguanas with a nice cocktail bar, or a C?te Brasserie with a decent wine list? God knows why Pizza Express would even entertain this space. Louisa.

Where on the application does it say its going to be a Pizza Express? If that?s the case I?ve never heard of anything more ridiculous in all my years. Turning a useable 24 hour shop into yet another pizzza based restaurant. The area is saturated with the bloody things. Louisa.

I do not wish to involve myself with this thread, but a quick search of TripAdvisor under the C&G page (check the comments under the lowest ranked title of ?terrible?), you?ll discover a very recent accusation of racism. In fact, the comment is titled that way. Whether this is linked with this incident described by the OP here, I do not know. Louisa.

(verbal) Assault just now in Peckham Rye Park

I miss the Heaton Arms a lot. Great pub. Also, another cultural reference to Heaton?s Folly which was a grand Manor House that stood near that site a few hundred years ago. Louisa.

No chance of Gail?s opening on LL. They have a branch in the Village. Louisa.

Like all good things in this neighbourhood, the Harvester was a victim of the dreaded G word. Plenty of folk would still use a Harvester, but because a load of wealthy foodies move into the area, rents go up, and cheaper places can no longer justify remaining at the increased rental. Simple as that really. It?s all well and good a bunch of people saying that?s not true, but the proof is in the pudding. Also, those luvvies and foodies who now call ED home, don?t really notice because the increased rentals provide them with exactly the sort of overpriced eatery they love. It?s win-win for them. The rest of us who like a bargain, are more marginalised than ever for a cheap meal out. Unless you don?t mind traipsing to the nearest Wetherspoons! Louisa.

The Kings on the Rye was a big old gin palace back in the day. Became a proper boozer and was totally destroyed during the Blitz. A lot of people were killed at that spot. The post war rebuild was not at all sympathetic to the original building, but it was still a great pub for some years. Started to decline into the early 80?s and was awful by the time it eventually closed. The buses used to have ?Kings Arms? references for as long as I can remember. All that history has now been lost forever, that?s what happens when development is allowed to happen without any understanding or appreciation of the history of the site. It?s not all about keeping a boozer, it?s so much more than just that. Louisa.

You seem to spew BS quite regularly on here, most of which is a poor attempt to troll. Boring. Back on topic, the site is important and the facts speak for themselves. The link provided above explains the history of this site, and to at least retain the name, aspects of the building would be good. Look at lost locations such as The Kings Arms, where a ugly block of flats now stand. Louisa.

What?s so difficult to understand. It?s not the current building that?s necessarily important. It?s the site, the name, what stood there previously. All interconnected over numerous centuries. Not many people (as far as I?m aware), are arguing for the pub to reopen. But something sympathetic to the history of location wouldn?t go amiss. We all just want to see the site/building reused again. Louisa.

The building and the site it sits on is important. The Plough was given a fate worse than death when it?s name was unceremoniously changed in the mid 90s. Fortunately the pub company saw sense and changed it back. The likes of The Plough, The Grove, The Dog- they?re all a really important part of our pub heritage in a country where pubs are closing. Once they?re gone, that?s it, no return. Louisa.
