Glad to see the anonymity being afforded in the circumstances. Just one thing, if we stake them out, who will bring the stakes? I have a hammer! -
ED Police Station and abandoned dog

Overburdened and under-resourced they may be and I can understand that the theft of a camera may not be top of their priorities, but that does not excuse the blatantly aggressive behaviour that my friend was subjected to or the complete lack of civility or courtesy that I experienced. An increase in taxes is an easy Damoclean sword to dangle but I have little doubt that greater efficiency(or even basic civility) could be engendered without a need for an increase in taxation. -
and the Doctors is run like a gardeners! Great if you want to buy slug pellets or a nice nasturtium but not great if you have an ingrowing toenail or a touch of the sniffles. I went there and was diagnosed as having green fingers and Dutch Elm disease.

I must say that, despite the problems people may have had, I think Doctors are a very good invention. Were it not for their sterling work for very low salaries many people would not be as healthy as they are now. In fact, some people might even have ended up dead!!! I think that is a fact we should all reflect upon.

"Guy or lesbian people" then. "Those whose sexual orientation is gay or lesbian". "Those whose sexual preference is for members of their own or both sexes". WHatever the appropriate phrase is, please feel free to substitute. -

By the way, I went into a shop in ED recently to buy a second class stamp and offered to pay by card. The shopholder refused to take it so I guess that proves there are some honest retailers out there and not everyone is trying to skim your card. -
The Drum may be very nice and the retro 'Hammer Horror set-in-70s Chelsea' feel of some of the staff is amusing. Only problem is that in the past their opening hours have been a tad irregular. I have sometimes drifted round the corner at a xcivilised hour looking for a quick latte to lift my flagging spirits to find the shutters down. Perhaps a little more regularity might encourage more punters?

Quite. And we wouldn't want women to be exposed to the traumatic experience of having to travel in the company of men, would we? A tongue in cheek point, perhaps, but it sums up the principle involved here perfectly. -

I agree with Snorky's recomendation of anonymity. If suspicions exist, take them to the police. After all, it would not be fair to blacken the name of an innocent retailer simply on the basis of rumour or circumstantial evidence. First we try them - then we hang them. -

I am in full agreement with many of the recent postings - for different reasons or with different conclusions than the posters, however, I suspect. There is most certainly still gender inequality in society, no doubt, but this is not resolved by enshrining policies that simply reverse the direction of the discrimination. The 'positive discrimination' arguement is one of the most preposterous pieces of intellectual fraud I have ever encountered. Let us take this to its conclusion. For decades now men have had to work an extra five years of their lives before being able to claim a state pension, despite the fact that they have a shorter average lifespan. How do we deal with this appalling and inexcusable discrimination (probably the most blatant and bare-faced form of gender discrimination ever to exist and enshrined in law no less, a fact rarely mentioned in PC circles, strangely!, where women, those from ethnic origins, those with gay/lesbian lifestyles and the disabled are the only people 'allowed' to be 'victims'). If we took the 'positive discrimination' route we would turn this on its head and allow men to retire earier than women. That would obviously be an absurd proposition so we introduce a rationale response - remove any discrimination in favour of either gender and have a true level playing-field. With regard to different perceptions of different genders as to their safety in public places - these findings may be true. They are hardly likely to be resolved, however, by perpetuating these special provisions that continue to re-inforce the notion that woman are fragile, powerless and in need of protection, as an earlier contributor observed. -
ED Police Station and abandoned dog

Interesting to see the level of dissatisfaction out there prompted by my original posting. Just yesterday in conversation with a colleague I heard another dire story of the completely useless and unprofessional service provided by ED police station. I am certainly not suggesting that the police be abolished or that there is not a job for them to do. I am merely suggesting that they seem all too often either not to do it or to do it in a way that completely undermines the confidence the public has in the police. A police service that does not have the confidence and respect of the community it serves is in serious trouble so it seems rather alarming that the ED police are quite happy to haemorrhage away one of the most important (and free!) resources they have - the goodwill of the public they serve. -

By the way, I thought that Panther Cabs had eaten my hamster, but I got home and there was Bubbles spinning away safely in his wheel. What a relief! -

I completely agree that this policy is utterly unacceptable and the various spurious 'justifications' are absurd. Let me ask a simple question - what do you think the response would be if Fusion offered sessions exclusively for men who aren't comfortable with women, or who might, for example, feel that women are religiously 'unclean' at ceratin times of the month (a belief held by some religious traditions)? I am sure it would not be long before people were up in arms about such sex-discrimination. Historically, gender-discrimination in favour of men was supported by 'explanations' and 'justifications' that are much more plausible than those offered in support of this form of discrimination, yet it was recognised that such excuses just weren't good enough! It is a while since I looked at it but I believe that sex discrimination legislation outlaws discrimination in provision of goods or services on the grounds of gender. Unless there is some specific opt-out clause in the legislation the Council may well be in breech of this legislation. Perhaps someone with more time on their hands than I have could make further enquiries and take this forward? It disgusts me that my taxes are being used to provide services that facilitate discrimination on gender grounds and the matter should be addressed. -
ED Police Station and abandoned dog
Domitianus replied to Mark's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Setting aside their capability in dealing with abandoned dogs I have to question the general efficiency of East Dulwich Police. A friend of mine recently visited the station to collect a form he required to make a request for information. He found two other customers waiting who had been there for and hour and 90 minutes respectively without being served. My friend noticed that there was a young police officer in the office who seemed to be doing nothing but sitting in his chair twiddling his thumbs. After half an hour of waiting my friend politely enquired of this officer whether it would be possible for someone else to come out and deal with enquiries. The officer immediately responded in an extremely threatening, offensive and aggressive manner, shouting at my friend to get out. This jumped-up twerp, however, had chosen to pick on the wrong person and got a very blunt and to the point response from my friend who told him what a disgrace his behaviour was and asked for his number. The officer concerned refused to give it to him and simply walked out of the room only to return a few moments later with a colleague. He pointed out my friend and said "It's him, it's him". Suffice it to say that my friend was not impressed by these ganging-up tactics and only left the station after he had got the original officer's number and details of how to make a formal complaint which he did through Peckham Police Station. He is currently awaiting a response to his complaint. It would be nice to thinkthat this was a one-off experience but not so. Approximately eight months ago I had to visit East Dulwich police station myself to report the theft of a camera. The attitude of the civilian administration officer who 'took' my complaint was unbelievable. Completely lacking in the slightest degree of customer service skills, he took my complaint with not the slightest indication of courtesy or co-operation and finally delivered me a crime report number. When I asked him what would be done about the teft he replied "Nothing!" and proceeded to tell me that I should have reported it earlier. I pointed out that I had not reported the theft earlier as I had been unsure whether the camera had been lost or stolen and had not wanted to report a 'crime' if the camera subsequently turned up. He shrugged his shoulders in disinterest. The whole matter left me with a feeling of anger and disgust. Thieves are thieves. They do what they do and that is frustrating enough. However, I pay my taxes for a professional police service and instead we get the Keystone Cops - the only difference being the Keystone Cops are funny whilst the East Dulwich police station staff are unhelpful, rude and hostile!
