Hi admin, it seems my post has been moved to classifieds. I didn't realise this had happened and reposted. The post disappeared! I guess someone deleted it. It was for my nanny-share (I am the parent) so basically advertising a nanny so I get why you moved it, but you could have let me know by messaging me. I was sure the discussion page used to say that nanny services could be posted there? Or have I misremembered?

After deciding not to return to work after all I need to pass on my place in a super lovely nanny-share arrangement, based near the Horniman museum. Without us Nicky will have no children to look after between 10-2 on Wednesdays and between 8-2 on Thursdays and Fridays. She should be able to take children later in the day as well if she can combine with a school pick-up. She is fantastic and has been looking after children in the nanny share for at least 6 years. I have been told it is because domestic workers used to be tax exempt back in the day. The net rate is a hangover and many nanny agencies and "nanny tax" companies are working to change it - for the reason's discussed - a person's tax code is personal and deductions include many things that an employer should not be responsible for - student loans, unpaid tax, and other sources of income. All very interesting and the best advice seems to be to agree a gross rate, if necessary based on the nanny's expectation of a net rate.

This is all so helpful. Thanks. I think I will do as Wilko suggests, and work out a gross rate from a net rate if required. It seems like the "net" approach really falls down when the nanny is taking on more than one job, in which case she is effectively asking second and third employers to pay her more than the first employer (who gets the benefit of the tax free allowance).

I've been looking into this question too, and find the "net rate" idea completely baffling. Surely it's impossible to offer a rate after tax? I have never been offered any kind of a job where rates or salaries were offered that way, and I did heaps of various temporary things as a student (way back). I am particularly confused as I will be looking to employ a nanny one day a week, so the tax free allowance is likely to be used by a "first job". Meaning I would be paying NI (20% based on montassa's figures?) and 20% tax on the full amount - taking the final rate up to ?14/hr, where as the first employer would be paying considerably less because of the allowance? Nannies often have multiple jobs. Any comments greatly appreciated, I am trying to work out a fair rate and feel confused. Thanks Kirsty

Hi there. I'm looking to start employing a nanny/mother's help 1 day a week (Friday's). I'm going to be around and there will be a baby and a 2 year old. I'm not sure how much is a reasonable wage for the role (per hour before tax, assuming holiday's are provided - is easiest for me to understand i.e the way I've always been employed). I vote for the more expensive Ikea potty which has lift out section for easy flushing etc, and a Potette for out and about.

Hi, I am trying to decide between Blossoms Montessori (ED) or Rose House Montessori (FH) for my 2 year old to start in September. I need to decide by tomorrow and am totally stuck. Blossoms is cheaper, a bit smaller, and closer (15 minutes walk). They seem lovely but are a bit scruffier than Rose House, and they don't seem to have Montessori accreditation (although the Montessori itself isn't such a big thing for me). Hours will be 9-4. Ofsted is Good. Rose House is very impressive, with proper Montessori accreditation, very clean and well run seeming. Ofsted is Outstanding. Its more expensive and further avay though (30 minutes walk). Hours will be 9-12 initially then 9-4 after he turns 3. Any advice or experience of either of these nurseries? Many thanks K
