You should be able to drop these off at any charity shop. Just ask them if they take clothes for ragging. If they do, they?d probably appreciate it if you labelled the bag as rags, it saves them time sorting stuff out. They get paid per kilo. There?s also a clothing bin outside North Dulwich station. Be aware that most places won?t accept duvets or pillows for textile recycling.

Charter School ED - SEN / ADHD experience
Digbina replied to schneidypops11@gmail's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I don't have a child at the Charter but I was sufficiently concerned by my experiences at an open day last year to start looking elsewhere. I asked about the "nurture unit" and the Head replied that it was only for children who were "cognitively impaired". Not only is this wrong, it's completely insensitive. There was lots of talk about the "warm strict" approach and the need to keep the children under control. I also got the impression that the SEN department were overwhelmed. I do have a child at the Hamlet and I am pleased to say that after a rocky start, the school has really worked hard to help my son develop his social skills and self-confidence. But like everywhere, you have to be an unrelenting advocate for your child. -
Summer camp ideas for 5 & 6 yr old boys
Digbina replied to whywhy's topic in The Family Room Discussion
You could also try Treetops, which runs at Dog Kennel Hill primary from 8-6. Pretty sure they have spaces. https://www.treetopsclubs.co.uk -
Thanks mima08. I will show them the pictures and take it from there. Monkeyspanner - I will tell my children to be mindful of making extreme assumptions.

My sons came home from their swimming class yesterday quite worried about a cat they saw. Before I call Celia Hammond, does anyone recognise this description - tabby, thin, fur is a bit scruffy, no collar?

Dulwich Hamlets - any information good or bad?
Digbina replied to amlh's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My son attends the Hamlet. We are very happy with it and so is he. It?s well run, the teachers are kind, supportive and engaged and my son seems to have an interesting variety of lessons. Before Covid, there were lots of excursions and visits. You can get a good flavour of the school from its Twitter account. I think there was also an online ?open day?. You can probably still access it. Music is very strong. I was impressed by the Y6 children who showed us around - they were confident and articulate without being precocious and cocky. I think occasionally some parents complain that very gifted children aren?t stretched enough and remove them to the private sector. This isn?t an issue for us and in any case, I think it?s important for children not be pressured throughout primary school. Do you have specific questions? -

Tales on Moon Lane are still honouring them and had a good range still available this weekend.

Are any adventure playgrounds open this Easter holiday?
Digbina replied to scareyt's topic in The Family Room Discussion
DKH adventure playground opens on 12 April. -
Please don?t think that a private school will automatically be a better option than state. I made that mistake and my son has paid dearly for it with some very upsetting experiences and the development of an anxiety disorder. (It was a pre-prep so at least it won?t be somewhere you?re considering.) He is now at Dulwich Hamlet Juniors which isn?t small but it is nurturing and caring. He has really come on and is leaving those early bad experiences in the past. The staff are the most important thing, and the more there are, the less likely it is that they will be stretched thinly. More children also means more experience with SEN, generally speaking.

If anyone is looking for holiday clubs with spaces, there seem to be plenty of places for both weeks at Treetops Holiday Camp, based at Dog Kennel Hill primary. They are new to ED, so may not have the visibility that the more established camps have. This is their website: https://www.treetopsclubs.co.uk.

Does anyone have nay knowledge of when/whether the adventure playground will be re-opening or holding a holiday club over Easter? The website states that they are closed due to Covidwith no indication of when they'll re-open. I've rung and emailed but have had no reply to either.

New recycling bin for electrical items
Digbina replied to Nigello's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It?s just past the junction with Carlton Avenue and before the Crown and Greyhound on the left hand side as you enter Dulwich Village heading south towards Dulwich Park. -
Thanks very much. Looking forward to a visit.

Does anyone know if this is open any days this week?

Where to donate new kids' books locally?
Digbina replied to redjam's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I?m not sure who you would contact but HMP Brixton will take adult books for the prison library(probably not Mills and Boon!). Or you could contact a prisoner literary group. -
There?s a thread on NextDoor about them. FelineFriends are now involved as I think there are kittens so a TNR operation may be on the cards.

Any thoughts on returning to school in September?
Digbina replied to sweetgirl's topic in The Family Room Discussion
You might find this announcement re the risks to school-age children reassuring: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/aug/28/vanishingly-small-risk-of-death-or-severe-illness-for-children-from-covid. Only six children have died from Covid-19 infection, and the research study states that they had 'profound co-morbidities'. Underlying respiratory conditions such as mild asthma and cystic fibrosis did not meet the standard of 'profound co-morbidities'. Healthy black children are no more at risk than other children. -
Any thoughts on returning to school in September?
Digbina replied to sweetgirl's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I am extremely relieved to be sending mine back. The risk is exceptionally low and the damage to their mental health and social experience in not returning to school is significant. I believe children need routine, their friends, and people qualified to teach them. This didn?t happen at my house during lockdown! -
Does anyone know of any activities (clubs or otherwise) that are running in the week before schools return? I'm aware of the DKHAP's opening hours that week but haven't come across anything else.

Try Real Family Holidays with the Field Services Council. They have holiday spots near Cardiff and one in Somerset.
