Where has the Kingsdale School thread gone ?

Ok Admin, fair enough, but what about the people who posted bona fide messages? Could you not have just removed the perpetrator's posts? Some of us were interested in following the thread. -
Driving to/thru Camberwell Thursday Bus Strike
stacey-lyn replied to Cazz's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
London Buses tfl.gov.uk Home Live travel news Getting around I am writing to let you know that the strike action on the bus network planned for tomorrow, Thursday 5 July, has now been suspended. We welcome the news that the two parties - the bus operators and the union - will now be continuing their negotiations and that our customers will not face disruption tomorrow. Yours sincerely Peter Bradley Head of Consultation Delivery -
As it happens, this morning we noticed several cars parked in a row along Consort Rd SE15 with missing wing mirrors. Hmm.

ED house prices: sanity check please
stacey-lyn replied to Wanhope's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The property next door to me hasn't sold in years. It's been listed as a single purchase and/or as 2 separate flats by various agents and despite the shifts in supply & demand over the years, it still remains unsold. Imho, artificially inflated and yes, arbitrary, silly prices. -
Strange bottles full of orange liquid
stacey-lyn replied to tarafitness's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
5 strange bottles, sitting on the wall. . . In High Holborn near Covent Garden today. Strikingly similar to the E.D. species. Hmm. -
Wasn't the W. Rose site an underwear shop in more recent times? The window displays were sometimes quite 'adult', not XXX mind you and more Ann Summers than Agent Provocateur. I recall male mannequins in tight, striped, ribbed, cotton boxers in the window. T'was never open, not each time I walked past anyway. Very odd.

Like Keef's mum, we always went to Dave's (butchers) on LL near the EDT. It was always fresh, he stocked some free range products and we were never overcharged (unlike W Rose). He was a happy chap with a huge personality & often threw in a few more bangers, chicken pieces etc. He hung in there for a year or so after Sainsbury's opened and then, lo and behold! he ended up working as a butcher in the Sainsbury's (but wasn't there for long). The small deli next to the pram shop was very well stocked and run by a woman and her Japanese husband (their daughter sometimes helped out). Very nice couple who had wonderful olives (even better than old Andreas across the road) and the best vegetable pie we have ever eaten and sadly we have never been able to find anything similar since their departure. The other Dave (and his tiny veg stand) was great. He supplied a few of the LL & SE London restaurants and his potatoes were used by Kennedy's Sausages. His dad had the stand before him so it had been there since the 50's/60's. Free Range up the other end of LL was a fabulous place for brunches and Sunday lunch. Such a homely and friendly atmosphere and really good meals owned and run by a lovely woman. Mr Ashwin Tanna of Tanna's Pharmacy (pre Day Lewis that moved to Melbourne Grove) retired recently and I vividly recall the launch of his London mayoral campaign in '99. These places & characters are sorely missed.

A big (tu). We spend quite a bit of time in Amsterdam and this is our local.. It would be fantastic to have something similar in ED within walking or bike riding distance for all ages. Will watch this post.

Lordship Lane bars about 7 years ago?
stacey-lyn replied to writerEm's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I agree with Jeremy. It's a shame you aren't going back further as a lot more has changed and a far more interesting 'regeneration' study. Remember the old Kings on The Rye, on the corner of East Dulwich Rd & Peckham Rye? Now that's an entire book in itself. As for The Drum, it didn't have a late license and drove the residents to despair. -
Live music venue in E Dulwich?
stacey-lyn replied to naomijaynehicks's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Have you tried the Old Nuns Head pub? We saw "Eli-rose and Garry" about a month or so ago. They did soul, r n b & soft rock covers and we had a great time & really enjoyed their range of music. She is young & has a fabulous voice and he's a great guitarist and they had someone on percussion too which was nice. They have a room upstairs for private functions and we've been to a couple of parties up there too. The pub posts in the What's On in East Dulwich section. Worth a look perhaps. . . ;-) PS And they have an outside space - a beer garden with tables. -

"I have since become (no, always have been) a real stickler for grammar.... " Then you'd know that an ellipsis has three dots, not four. Just saying. . . ;-) In any event, yes, good news for Goodrich. -
In our previous home, we obtained a Lawful Development Certificate from Southwark Planning Department. We did not alter the exterior, it was not a listed building, not in a conservation area etc so it was a fairly simple process. Good luck with it.

Royals coming to Dulwich Picture Gallery today....
stacey-lyn replied to gerry's topic in The Lounge
If we look at the brief encounter through the eyes of a 14 year old boy it might give us a bit more perspective on Junad1997's comment. Given that such visits are choreographed within strict time constraints, as was the Queen's visit to the DPG some years ago, there is never an opportunity to engage in conversation or spending 'quality' time. Perhaps if there was, there could be more to say but fair go, it's an honest comment and probably as much as anyone got from the hoo ha. Oh, plus a souvenir flag. -

Someone nicked my car battery!?!
stacey-lyn replied to SeanHitz's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Along the same lines, our old housemate was about to climb into his car early one winter morning years ago when he felt something was odd. All 4 brand new tyres were gone leaving the car neatly propped up on the bricks that they had nicked from the renovation across the street. While we're waiting for the police, neighbour arrives but instead of tea & sympathy, the grumpy sod demands his bricks back! -

When we were burgled in our previous home at G.Green, the police advised us to pop down to the Kings on the Rye and buy all our gear back. :( -
Oh dear. Not that sort of tosh again. Just a couple of snippets from the Post Office website: "Serving you for centuries, the Post Office? is committed to making your life easier so that you can concentrate on what really matters." "We are a commercially driven organisation that fulfils an essential social role." What Worker said.

Very much enjoyed our M&S Dine In meal for a tenner (a saving of ?18) - a very nice wine included that we are enjoying in the sunny garden on the chairs we picked up from a lovely woman on the EDF. All the best for Thursday, louloub.

Thank you Callie, Bic Basher, candp and those who PM'd for your alternatives - I shall try them out. Btw, when I spoke to the manager a few months ago, he said that 3 of the senior & most experienced staff had left (all of whom I knew as I've been in ED for years): 1 forced into early retirement, another transferred to Brixton and the other promoted to another branch, which has only exacerbated the staffing problems. He offered no solutions. In any event, so rather than a nice short walk to my local LL PO with my parcels & post, before or after a stroll to the LL shops, bank etc. all in one local trip, it looks like it's the inconvenience of a commute. Not really good enough, is it, but I'd rather that than more of these frustrating unacceptable fiascos. Life's too short. ;-)

local freedom to express yourself
stacey-lyn replied to Mark Arram's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
can you imagine being in court and > having either side arguing the toss over the legal > definition of 'repetitive beats'?? We did exactly that some years ago as there was an allegation, by Southwark, of a breach of a pub's entertainment license (the pub was facing a hefty fine & possible loss of license). It was farcical. The Southwark inspectors (who had been drinking in the pub & reported the alleged offence by an experienced guitar duo)were completely out of their depth & luckily the magistrate was a bit of a music fan & fairly knowledgeable. It was pretty much slam dunk for us. What a waste of the council's resources in legal fees etc. -
Given the often lengthy delays, I try to limit the visits to the PO to one or two a week. Yesterday afternoon, 90 minutes before closing, there were 22 people in the queue with 3 windows open and rather than opening another window to accommodate the growing numbers, one went off for his break. The line quickly lengthened to 28 including one woman with a plastered leg on crutches, 3 lots of mums with (understandably) screaming young children in pushchairs on such a warm afternoon. 1/2 hour later, even more customers had spilled out on to the street and still no extra staff. The manager was no where to be seen and despite several customers asking for extra staff, noone came out. It is a given that staff have breaks, but surely, not at peak times which seems like very poor customer service and mismanagement. The frustrated staff asked to put complaints in writing (however this hasn't worked at all in the past). My waiting time was 40 minutes. With the sub post offices all but gone, and the Village perhaps the only other option, surely there has to be an effective way to get the post office to respond to the obvious demand.

I empathise with you. Mum-in-law suffered years of this sort of anti-social behaviour (and worse). The summer months, in particular, were intolerable. She kept a diary (as instructed by all and sundry) and notified the noise team & police each time (try to get an incident number from them, different to a crime reference number, or some sort of reference as it's all valid evidence). We even got witness statements from visitors including community nurses etc. The police and council were ineffective (they were council tenants) but when we invested in cctv and with the evidence caught on camera, they acted. It was a worthwhile investment. You have to careful about privacy issues & make sure that it is installed correctly. Best.

I was stuck in traffic next to them on Cheyne Walk as they were making their way down sarf. And just when I thought I had got far enough away. . . :-S
