Is it estimated? Whenever we've had an estimated bill, it's been astronomical. The actual meter readings are not nearly as high, albeit still exorbitant. If it's estimated, call the provider & supply the reading - they'll send you an amended bill.

No political aspirations then DJKQ?

Love her or loathe her, the pioneering first woman PM was a major symbolic leap forward, she had the courage of her convictions and was a survivor when most politicians are not, but what, if anything, is her legacy for women?

Don't want to add to the doom & gloom but this is a useful bulletin we received today from the Peckham Residents' Network. Message from Southwark Council and Southwark Police The Council Warden service is working along side the Police in trying to raise awareness to the ongoing Courier fraudsters and we would be grateful for any help you could give. The fraud works by the suspect telephoning the victim and claiming to be someone from an authority - usually the police, bank or Serious Fraud Office. They tell them that their bank account has been compromised and their card must be collected. The most convincing element of the ruse is that the suspect instructs the victim to hang up and call the police/bank/Serious Fraud Office on a genuine number to check that they are who they say they are. The victim dials the new number but the fraudster does not disconnect so, unknown to the victim, they are still speaking to the suspect or a co-conspirator. The fraudster then convinces the victim to reveal their PIN, usually by typing it in on their keypad. The suspect is able to tell which keys have been pressed. They then instruct the victim to put their bank card in an envelope and send a - usually unwitting - courier or taxi driver to the victim's house to collect it. The card is delivered to another suspect and is used, with the PIN, to empty the victim's bank account. Police have identified that Criminal Groups are behind the fraud but despite arresting many of these, courier fraud is continuing as new Criminal Groups take over and convince victims that they are genuine. The ongoing scam has impacted every borough and claimed 2,229 victims - mostly elderly - in two years. We aim to help stop residents becoming victims by showing them how the fraud works and teaching them the key crime prevention pointers. These are: - Police and banks will never ask for your PIN or bank card - Never give your PIN or bank card to anyone - If you are contacted by someone who asks for these, hang up - Use a different line to report it to police on 101 or allow at least five minutes for the line to automatically clear. Call 999 if the crime is in action. Any help you could give by sharing this information would be greatly appreciated. A poster for display is attached. Thank you Paul Murphy Community Warden Team Leader, Community Safety and Enforcement Southwark Council www.southwark.gov.uk [email protected] Tel: 07930 201535

We go there quite often. We park in Greenwich and get the bus in. -
Anyone else get a leaflet today for the Tree of Hope charity collection scheme (run by SOS Clothes Ltd)? Asking for donations of clothing, jewellery, bric-a-brac etc for collection this Friday. www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/news/Mazher/article1067308.ece www.theargus.co.uk/news/9781475.Children_s_charity_may_be_victim_of_fraud/ This has been flagged for years; a Google search reveals numerous similar question marks about SOS and T o H is obviously aware of this. So, sorry Tree o Hope, I'll be taking our donations to St Christopher's and/or my choice of charity store directly.

Famous People Seen in the Co-op
stacey-lyn replied to nowittyname's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Define 'famous' please as I haven't a clue as to who most of the ones spotted in Sainsbury's are/were. In fact as I am focussed more on getting in and out of there, be it Sainsb, Co-op, Waitrose, Lidl or wherever before my ice-cream & frozen petit pois turn to mush, it's unlikely that I'll contribute to the thread after this. Caveat: while stocking up on Sainsbury's 3 for ?12 wine recently, I nabbed the last pinot grigio before the woman next to me. Another shopper scowled disapprovingly and told me it was "(insert name)" from Eastenders. (But I guess this should be in "Famous people in Sainsburys"). So there you go. Blissfully clueless. -

At a guess, the Supplementary Planning Document (rather than the pelvic pain SPD, ouch). Though I could be wrong. -
Sunday Lunch recommendations
stacey-lyn replied to babisticbabymassage's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We had a delicious Sunday lunch today at the Old Nun's Head. The sort-of new chef is spot on. We had the roast lamb, the roast beef and the belly pork - all served with the trimmings. The vegetables (served separately) were great- uber fresh greens, cauliflower in a grain mustard sauce, carrots & purple cabbage. Perfectly prepared and not mush. All roast dishes come with really good large Yorkshires and roast potatoes and at ?12 for the pork (or the roast organic chicken option, ?10 for the vege option - neither of which we tried but they also looked really good) and ?13 for the beef and We asked for rare beef and got tender, rare beef. Portions are generous too. We left pleasantly full (and couldn't finish all the veg). Service was very friendly and quick. There were a few families with toddlers, all well catered for. We sat outside in the rear garden, read the papers for a bit and it was lovely (much quieter than The Rye but that's what we wanted). Can't fault it. A huge thumbs up. -
A 'sock puppetry' section seems long overdue.

The Cherry Tree official opening Thursday 30th August

Just walked past weighed down with my shopping so could only manage a peek in but it looks much more welcoming and a fair turn out already. Hope it works for the new management. -
Who knows but something ain't kosher. While speaking to them I was imaging the scenario: BAA dude puts hand over phone and says to mate "Hey Mac, got another one of those SE Londoners complaining about planes at 4.30am. What do I tell her?" Mac: (Sniggering) "You have the script. Stick with it". Raucous laughter at BAA ensues.

Thanks y'all. I guess we'll give it a go, sans and avec garlic. I know what Mr Lyn will have to do when he gets back from the pub.

Seems our garden has become the fox's Comfort Inn. They've taken to defecating right outside the kitchen door and though our dog thinks a roll in it is truly fabulous we've had enough of the almighty stench & mess. We have made the garden as fox proof as possible short of electric fencing. We're at our wits' end and hope that something other than napalm and land mines could be the solution. To avoid a fox stuck in a scene from the Hurt Locker, Southwark & the Fox Project have recommended "Scoot" and "Get Off". Has anyone had any success or otherwise with either?

Could it possibly be the wind blowing the fireworks smoke this way? Neighbours swear it is.

what time is the torch going thro peckham?
stacey-lyn replied to tiddles's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Been & gone. As one shopkeeper said, the last time it was this busy was during the riots. Imho, good vibe, happy clappy flag waving, kids with their excellent home made flames, friendly smiling police, clean streets and empty odourless bins plus sunshine all of which pleased pretty much everyone - even the local curmudgeons. Win win. -
