  1. These stretchers can be found serving as railings in several places in London. I have attached a pic of them in use during WW2 and also a screenshot from the film 'In Which we Serve' in which I hope you can see they are lifting a casualty on one stretcher while an empty one is being moved in the background.
  2. Brad did a lot of work for us four years ago and has just been back to do a small job. As it was a fiddly job with small iterations they fitted it in around other jobs. As last time I was impressed with the firm's professionalism, reliability and attitude. I'm pleased to find someone interested in building long term clients and would definitely recommend.
  3. 5 Sea King helicopters have been conducting a flypast around the southwest today to mark their decommissioning. Perhaps they were also used st King's: http://www.itv.com/news/westcountry/2016-03-21/in-pictures-sea-king-helicopters-in-final-fly-past-over-the-south-west/
  4. Best thread I've read in a long time! 😀 except I've now got the annoying ear worm 'I'm only human, born to make mistakes...' Does anyone here like Human League?
  5. Wanted to recommend a plumber I haven't actually used! I range Lee from Garvey Plumbing 07881 277385 after seeing the recommendations on here as we have an intermittent problem with our underfloor heating. Lee explained what it might be but said we should leave it be unless it continually recurs. It was refreshing to find he wasn't looking to drum up business for himself so I thought I would post a recommendation. I will definitely use Lee if anything does go wrong as he was very knowledgable about underfloor heating.
  6. About two thirds through this article on Germans in South London: http://www.dulwichsociety.com/2014-autumn/1045-the-germans-of-champion-hill-by-sharon-o-connor
  7. BrandNewGuy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Well, he said they walked, so I assume so. So were > they driven before now because of the dangers of > the junction? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the changes to the junction have not changed the travelling habits of any of the school children using it, except insofar as the removal of the barriers make it a nicer experience to cross the road here. I'd be astonished if there are people who used to drive who are now walking because of the work done.
  8. I'm not surprised it won't be finished for 2 September, there's hardly ever anyone working on it. If there were people working there 9-5 each day I bet it would have been finished in half the time, even allowing for cement to dry etc.
  9. Ruskin Park is only for guide dogs, or assistance dogs. At least that's what the signs on each gate say.
  10. James, I would be interested in going to a meeting too.
  11. You might count it as too mainstream but I can highly recommend High Society at the Old Vic. It's played more like Katherine Hepburn's The Philadelphia Story than the Grace Kelly film. Kate Fleetwood is terrific in it. Personally I would not recommend Light Shining in Buckinghamshire at the National, despite its rave reviews. I found it over-worthy and interminablely long. The Red Lion is very good and Daniel Mays is funny as the dodgy geezer football manager. I think he is one of our most underrated actors.
  12. The listed status was based on incorrect information. The stocks never actually stood where the sign is, their original site was nearby. This is from the Dulwich Society website: While the Society welcomes the listing, English Heritage has partly based its decision on an incorrect secondary source. The Society has written to them pointing out the error and referred the organisation to the correct primary source.
  13. I love DALeast, it would be great to get another mural on that wall. Would he be prepared to gain inspiration from the Picture Gallery, like some of the other artworks? The girl at a window by East Dulwich station is such a favourite in our family.
  14. holloway I have pm'ed you rather than go off topic but good to know others have crossed the river!
  15. It's a tricky one isn't it? My mum used to say Brixton was very posh before the Second World War, her mum used to clean for the big houses. I'm a blow in though, grew up in Islington before that got gentrified).
  16. There's a whole corridor with Mary Anning's finds. On the right hand side of the great hall, roughly opposite the dinosaur galleries. They have the original portrait of Mary too (in the green dress holding a fossil hammer) but that's not on show sadly.
  17. Robin this seems like a commen sense proposal and I agree most of the issues are with pedestrians crossing but will it pass muster here, as the money is coming from a cycling budget. Won't the council be looking for cycling based proposals rather than pedestrian based?
  18. This worked for my daughter when she did the same thing with her iPhone (paid for herself, receipt available on request): turn it fully off immediately, not just the one button off but the hold it down till it fully turns off. This stops it making any electrical connections itself. Then immerse it in a bowl of rice and leave it somewhere warm but not hot, so an airing cupboard rather than a radiator. Leave it for as long as you can but at least 24 hours. Hers was as good as new but I think it's the turning it off quickly that is key. It's something they only do the once!
  19. Another thumbs up for Andy and Richard from Andyman. They have done a number of small jobs for me such as repairing part of a wooden floor, resealing a bath and a shower, hanging a mirror and other small repairs. I'm very happy with the work and will be using them again.
  20. The response from Alastair Hanton, Dulwich Society Transport Committee, reads like a press release from the school. There is clear double counting re the onsite parking spaces as the teachers are expected to park on the sports club spaces and so are music school and sports club users. I think they are assuming all three groups won't be vying for spaces at the same time but they often will be. The parking will be displaced to local streets but that's OK because - hey we did a survey and the surrounding streets have lots of spaces.
  21. Thanks jctg, I'll see if that works for mine but it's quite a lump.
  22. Thanks Burbage, that's perfect.
  23. Is taking it to the dump the only option? Or is there anywhere closer to home/more environmentally friendly I can take it?
  24. Subsidence is very common in south London, is it a Victorian house? They often had inadequate or no foundations. Most of the houses in my road have been underpinned as they have no foundations. Also houses were often underpinned in the 80s following the hot summers of the 70s (showing my age here!), it was quite the fashion. Ask the vendors whether the underpinning was done once then not needed again, ask them if they have had trouble getting insurance since the underpinning. If the answers are yes to the first question and no to the second I personally would not worry too much. We bought our house knowing it had been underpinned. At first we had to stay with the same insurer but more recently have changed insurer. Maybe ring for some insurance quotes and see what kind of response you get (ring rather than apply online so you get more info on how they consider underpinning). Also call an estate agent in Chislehurst and ask them how easy it is to sell a house which has been underpinned. Their response will give you more of an idea about resale issues.
