  1. Oops - My face is suitably red!
  2. There is a replacement bus service to London Bridge. I believe it's called the 176.

    Ladies or women?

According to a teacher at my school, Ladies always referred to one another as 'women'; Charwomen always referred to one another as 'ladies' And I've never understood why, in golf clubs, they have a Men's section and a Ladies' section. Surely it should be either Men and Women or Gentlemen and Ladies?
  4. Hear hear (or should it be 'here here'?).
  5. Just because other cities have waist-level lights doesn't necessarily mean that they're an improvement on the old high-level ones. In the olden days everyone could see the red/green man, and the visually impaired could hear the beeps. The waist-level ones are often obscured by people standing next to them. I really can't see the logic of the new design.
  6. Do you by any chance have a spare room that you could let? If the children each have their own bedroom at the moment, I'm sure they wouldn't mind bunking up together to release a space that could generate some useful extra (tax-free) income.
  7. Oh, I forgot to mention the lovely neighbours who moved their cars for us! We tucked a message under the windscreen wipers of a couple of cars, asking them to ring us if they were going to move their cars so that we could put a wheelie bin in the space. And both of them did - a lovely welcome to the area!

When we moved here (not on a Saturday) we asked the council about reserving a space for the lorry, but they told us that they cant do anything on streets where parking is unrestricted. We took their advice and "bagged" the necessary space by using our own car, a couple of traffic cones, and the wheelie bins.
  9. I'm not so sure about the drinking water. I think you're required to have a special tap ( fed directly from the mains) for drinking water. Your plumber would be able to tell you what the regs are.
  10. In our last house we had a water softener that did the job very efficiently. We had to keep it topped up with salt tablets (delivered in big bags by the local hardware shop)and have a separate tap for drinking water in the kitchen, fed from the mains. It was installed about fifteen years ago, and as far as I know it's still going strong.

    Thoughts...

And don't forget the biggest cost of all - Stamp Duty on your purchase.
  12. Try Delia's All-in-one sponge recipe. It's really fool-proof (aka even I can make it).
  13. I see what you mean about decluttering, Salsie, but have you thought of putting a load of stuff in store?
  14. Monday - ordered OH's birthday present via Amazon. Order confirmation e-mail revealed that I'd forgotten to change the delivery address (moved to ED a month ago). Immediately e-mailed the company to see if it could be changed. No it couldn't, because it had already been dispatched. Resigned to the fact that it would have to go to our last address and then be redirected to ED, thus missing The Day (today). Wednesday - postman delivers the parcel, complete with Post Office redirection label. To put it mildly, I was well impressed!
  15. It takes about 30 minutes from LL to Waterloo on the 176 bus.
  16. "White male, closely shaven hair". (I quote)
  17. Apparently they've only moved into London relatively recently. Something to do with climate change, I gather.
  18. A Jersey Tiger Moth is in our garden this morning. Very striking (I thought it was a butterfly) - black and white stripes on its back, and a flash of brilliant orangey-red when it flies.
  19. A wooden window can last 300 years and is biodegradable. A PVC window lasts 30 years and is non- biodegradable. So at the end of 300 years there will be ten PVC windows in a landfill site - forever.
