if you want real beach and sand Margate is one of the best and the town is much improved. The Dreamland amusement park is sadly closed but is being renovated and will open as a heritage /vintage ride venue. Nearby Broadstairs is also very nice and the Harbour beach is lovely.

To the Cycling Adult with a child on Goodrich Road at 22.45 on Sat 26th July
Romnarz replied to Cedges's topic in The Lounge
Think the reaction is a bit over the top - I would not personally ride a bike at night without lights ( too scared to ride a bike at all , though I did so in the distant past )However this was not a dark night in middle of the country, roads are reasonably well lit and you did see them as you sped past! In the UK motorist do not respect other road user and drive far too fast in town. Try to maintain 30mph or more with bikes around is madness. -
Sadness at changing atmosphere of East Dulwich
Romnarz replied to vanstone's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I used to live in ED from 1969 - moved away in 1971 and recently moved back - so take my word for it ED has changed but of course so has everywhere else ! Just get over it -
The butcher at the plough is very good.Excellent beef n bacon n rabbit. Believe a lot of his stuff comes from his dad's farm near Halstead

Trying to buy a house in this area is near impossible
Romnarz replied to Grotty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If you cannot afford a house in this area you have to look elsewhere , it's that simple ! I would like to live in Knightsbridge ( as I once did years ago ) but now can't afford to so I have to slum it in Dulwich. -
Had a very rude young man call today , selling dishcloths etc I think. He had a laminated card round his neck that said official hawker as far as I could make out ( is there such a thing ?) he was extremely rude when I told him very politely that I did not buy at the door. Swearing as he went along my path he turned back to show me the large wad of cash he had ! Who buys from these guys ?

St Christopher's Christmas trees
Romnarz replied to Flatforsale's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
They have a letter form St Chrisophers on dislpay. They donated over five thousand pounds to the charity last year and clearly state ?5 donated for each tree sold. If they open for thirty day that means about thirty five trees sold a day. Presume the charity has no way of checking this, but they do seem very busy and keep late hours. I think it's better to support local traders that are with as all round. We got a super tree from the florist on the corner opposite library and will make a gift aid do traction to St Christopers, which means the tax man has to chip in! -
How did you appeal?- first stage is by phone or online with only a chance of a brief explanation- they never listen at this stage. stage two is to fill out appeal form they send you and append letter giving full details etc Stage three is in front of a independent assessor who WILL listen to reason Please DO appeal - this fine is just daft- I am happy to advise on appeal as I have been successful several times ( not of course when its a fair cope, if you are even two minute late returning to a meter its your fault so of course i would shut up and pay )
-
The appeal procedure is in three parts 1 by phone or online - at this point they don't listen - response is almost always the computer/ photo evidence shows you have committed an offence 2 by letter setting our your case in detail - include your own photos , quote name and addresses of any witnesses you have , etc 3 appear befor an independent adjudicator - often council don't turn up because they know case is weak Good luck Ps wich you could charge them for the amount of time/ money it takes to deal with this because they DON'T listen at stage one

I think these online courses almost expect you to cheat if you want to. its on your conscience! If you get someone to invigilate you how could they check out that they were not a relative/friend or that you had not bribed them etc I am a part time teacher so willing to help if its really necessary

Parking controls in the Dulwich park?
Romnarz replied to achaikos's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Parking fees are often introduced in this sneaky way. They will have to pay someone to regularly check that cars have not overstayed the 4 hour limit, the few penalty charges that get paid will not be enough so then they will say they have to introduce a charge to pay for the enforcement.- just wait n see! -
If lots offers above asking price have been made that shows that people are prepared to pay that daft price !If I was selling I'd ask for even more. It's just supply and demand. The market is also being distorted by the'buy to let brigade'they are buying propery because pension rates are so poor and returns on saving are almost none existent after tax.

Think these bins are run by commercial copmpanies- Its much better to take your stuff to a charity shop where they will get a decent income from them and buyers can pick up a bargain. I was told buy one charity shop not to worry about even bringing tat ( but not worn shoes )as they get ?5 a bag when they sell this to commercial guys as 'rags'. However some charity shops are are a bit more snooty so do check. I might add NEVER leave anything on your doorstep to be collected in bags that drop through your door unlees it is from a known charity. If you read the very small print on the bags lots that sound like a charity are not- and only give a tiny proportion of total income to charity

Watch-out. Someone going through recycling bins.
Romnarz replied to Pocket's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
well these bins are recycle bins and they are recycling so thats got to be good. I suspect that most of my carefully recycled stuff gets buried or burnt anyway. Lewisham have a waste incinerator SELCHP near millwall football that needs to be fed loads of rubbish in order to generate much needed electricity. -
Lordship lane Co-op wants to open 23/7
Romnarz replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If the coop are daft enough to think that people are stupid and want to shop 24/7 then let them. I cant see there being a huge number of cars fighting for a parking place at 2 am.Most big supermarkets have stopped all hours opening because there was NOT enough demand. -
Its cheap compared to the poncy Ritzy and it shows films- compliants should be directed to management - people have too much time on there hands to be posting and this issue- ( yes including me ! )

I like it - got to be better than a brick wall
