  3. Hi All Following incredible assistance from The Dulwich Society, a visit to the Southwark Archives and lots local insight from this forum, social media and visitors to ed we have created a visual history of ed's home, 41 North Cross Road. We think it looks great, you can see it on our Instagram and Facebook pages: https://www.instagram.com/p/C6UJsC3MDsS/ https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=947290310732033&set=pcb.947290447398686 There is a much less pretty but more detailed version for anyone interested. Many thanks for all your help. Dan

  5. Other than Green Cross Code does anyone know of any other filming that has taken place on North Cross Road over the years?
  6. Thanks - the Boy from East Dulwich memoir is brilliant - I never knew Francis Rossi had links to the area! The Green Cross Code video is wonderful - its the parade up from us that features - bookended by The Clipper and Glazer Delmar today. There were so many shops and local businesses.
  7. Grace and Favour went about 2012 - Rose moved down to Hastings. Trying to remember what came next - was it Duck Egg? Our store was originally a lot shallower but we extended out back pretty early on.
  8. Thanks Jeni. Thanks for this, much appreciated. That could well be it- I have an advert for Transylvanian Express from 1997 so know they were in situ then. IF B S Coppins were still trading when Sainbury's opened around 93 they may have struggled on for a couple of years and then sold up. We had a couple come in to ed just the other day - on a trip down memory lane as they lived in the flat above the shop for 5 years 1968 - 1972 - they had to walk through the butchers to get in and out. Thanks again Dan
  9. Help needed from those with long memories... Our store, ed, on North Cross Road celebrates 25 years this year. As part of the celebrations we are looking in to the history of the unit. With a lot of help from the amazing Dulwich Society and Southwark archives we have a pretty comprehensive history of businesses that traded from 41 North Cross Road going back to 1887 - it includes hatters, tailors, butchers and travel agents. ed took on the unit in 1999 from Transylvanian Express (Travel Agents) and we know that there was a Butchers (B S Coppins) trading there in 1986 but not sure what went on in between those dates - anyone know? Any ideas, anecdotes, memories and photos are MUCH appreciated. Many thanks Dan

  11. Hi, here is not the time or place to go in to particulars, though I?m sure it?s all in the public domain anyway. The initiative will be funded by HSC and other sources but the project has not even kicked off yet so all to be agreed as it develops. The aim of this thread was to recruit interested parties, which it has, so I am now going to bow out. If anyone want to get involved then please email and I?ll try and get everyone together as soon as possible. TE44 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Hi rigbydan, can you tell us how much funding was > been given.Thanks.
  12. Thanks this is great, will certainly keep in mind. Maybe this project will lead to other cross community collaboration, so that when such opportunities become available or when people find something that they feel will benefit the area (like recycling programmes, extra dog waste bins, toilet access initiatives and others mentioned in the thread), there is a pool of proactive people willing to work together to achieve them. 13. Thanks James, sure we'll be in touch as things get moving. 14. Lots of comments so will try to answer as many as I can. I?m biased yes but I would say that a strong and varied local economy is of benefit to the community. But anyway, the project is not just about shopkeepers ? of the 6 people present at our first meeting at least 3 were East Dulwich residents (2 with no business interest in the area). The projects not all about banners, one proposed element will give local organisations, charities, groups etc a platform to engage with the local community. Subsequent to this post and a mention in a local magazine we?ve received lots of interest from varied members of the community that want to get involved, if others want to join then please do email me and I?ll do my best to get people together. In response to concerns over council funding, I can only suggest that you speak to your councillor. I personally think that initiatives like this, that give all members of the wider community (business, residents, schools, charities etc) the opportunity to work together for the benefit of the area are a positive thing, but can appreciate that not all feel the same way.
  15. Hi Thanks for your interest. We made an application for fund's via Southwark's High Street Challenge. We were a small group that included a business owner, market trader and resident - we wanted to make sure we had community cross section. Now we have secured the funds we need to put the plan in to action so we are looking to increase the team and bring in people with various skills from all elements of the community - we have used the notice board in SE22 Magazine and the forum in order to recruit thus far. Hope this helps.
  16. EAST DULWICH NEEDS YOU! An alliance of East Dulwich businesses and residents are working together to capture and celebrate the creative and independent spirit and strong sense of community prevalent in our corner of London. We have recently been awarded funds to create an East Dulwich brand and install a free-standing map, lamp-post banners and introduce community elements to North Cross Road Market. We are looking for community minded and proactive people with skills including, but not limited to, design, marketing and PR to get involved. If you are interested, then please do email us at [email protected] and tell us how you can help. We look forward to meeting you.
  17. Don't forget us North Cross Road businesses, stalls facing away from the shops would obscure those businesses and funnel visitors away from them down the centre of the road.
  18. Oh yes, the page has gone down, I'll send NABMA an email to let them know.
  19. Thanks, apparently its been extended by a couple of days.
  20. Hi All North Cross Road Market is nominated at this year's Annual Markets Awards. Voting takes just a few seconds, just click on the link below and put in ?North Cross Road? - it's easy... http://www.nabma.com/britainsfavouritemarket/ Hurry, voting closes on the 12th January.
  21. I've never heard of the Norwood Chamber of Commerce, I guess they may list the area as falling within their realm but they are not active in the area. If you were to ask people on the ground in Rosendale road, both businesses and residents I would be very surprised to hear anyone say Norwood. Indeed, one of the reasons we started Love West Dulwich is because we felt a bit inbetween / peripheral, Lambeth were focused on West Norwood and Southwark on East Dulwich, so we took it upon ourselves to be more proactive, create an identity, foster a sense of community and promote the area, the lamppost banner scheme is part of this initiative.
  22. That Rosendale parade is Lambeth but would be considered West Duwlich. Lambeth runs down to the western side of Croxted Road so my shop, the Dulwich Trader is Lambeth but the shops opposite like Dulwich Books are all Southwark.
  23. I may be biased but there are lots of lovely stores in West Dulwich!
  24. Hi One person's West Dulwich is another person's West Norwood, Gipsy Hill or Dulwich Village but we at Love west Dulwich, an alliance of local businesses and residents see it roughly as follows: Western border: Martell Road / Rosendale Road Northern Border: South Circular - ish Eastern Border: Dulwich College Southern Border: somewhere along South Croxted Road Take a look at our map... https://www.facebook.com/lovewestdulwich/photos/a.273186842883838.1073741827.273178922884630/289447621257760/?type=3&theater We are hoping that this lamppost project will help define the area and give it a bit more identity.
