Hiya From Melbourne now in Dulwich. Melbourne very large suburban city. Anywhere around the bay is lovely - near beaches etc., though its not tidal and the beaches can be a little bit boring. Those closest to town South Melbourne are more urban the further from Melbourne they become more social etc., I would also look at up near Melbourne University (Parkville)and also Richmond and if you can afford it Torak. Enjoy

The sea cow failed in Clapham common as the age of residents moved up. Similarly as Ed has got older The bishop, adventure bar etc., have all felt the change in age. Sea Cow is no exception. On a nice note they do have a very successful van operation so its not all bad. Thanks for 12 years....

Sorry to jump in this late....but it was always my understanding that the owner had run the shop with their partner and when they died they left it as is. I think its not traded since the early 90s. Many people have offered to rent it but no offer has been accepted as the owner wants to keep as same. I think it's actually rather a romantic story. If true, a bit like the notebook.

Calton Rd, Court lane and Turney during the school holidays even in the morning are silent. There is no problem with traffic. If I was coming up with Blue Sky ideas I would encourage/enforce the local schools to look at park and rides to school (drop off outside of Dulwich, enforce no drop off zones and encourage the use buses . Or even making (god forbid) kids walk. Once you work out that with the three private schools combined with local primaries and secondary schools, there are about 5,000 kids within a two mile radius going to school. Thats a lot of potential cars. Stop driving to and from school and you're half way there.

I may be wrong but someone told me that the lights in Village Way/Red Post red light time had been increased by an additional 10 seconds allowing for a 17 second crossing. Same as up near Turney. Definitely noticed the same up at Herne Hill junction. Does seem that this has increased congestion and stressed aggressive driving.

One last post, as a dog owner who walks in Dulwich park, thought you'd appreciate the comment passed to me last week by a middle aged owner about their 10 month old spaniel, that "he wasn't sleeping through, and they had to bring in a dog sitter to put him to bed during the night" Mad parenting has now passed to canines....

any puppy will normally like cats particularly if they are brought into a home with them and grow up next to them. Cats are quite clever they will normally stay out of the dogs way unless they take a shine to them. Bigger dogs such a labs and retrievers etc will normally always be ok, sometimes terriers can chase cats but not normally if they are socialised early enough. Hope this helps.

hiya you've probably got a few inches of top soil with clay base below. Just put some sand in the ground (mixed in and flattened), a bit of loam and as as per Sue's comment work out how your going to walk across it i.e. flag stones. You may also want to try sedum mats if you don't want to water.

Yes feel very sorry for Serg, whilst his prices were high he was a great guy and top croissants. Dulwich Estates should be ashamed about allowing Romeo's, Cafe Rouge,Aucel Rocca and Gails to all come in against him whilst not supporting existing business and more importantly by not trying to add value to the village, i.e. butchers (one who applied for Gails shop - but I believe was turned down by DE), allowing the closure of the petrol station etc., I've also heard the post office is to close as well due to high rents so expect to see another coffee shop! Im not against a free market, but this does mean that increasingly the village at weekends resembles Wimbledon Village where all and sundry travel in to eat at chains and the locals leave well alone. That said, service is rubbish at the Dog and I don't think its been cleaned for years so good on DE for closing and developing that one.

I live quite close to Alleyns. Thirty years ago when I moved here the majority of students were local to the area indeed many were funded by Southwark Council. This meant we put up with disruption as we knew many of the students and felt that the school contributed to the local area etc., However, over the last few years it is obvious both by increased parking, buses coming in from Wimbledon, North London etc (just check the signs on the front of the buses)., and conversations with local people whose kids weren't accepted that Alleyns (an educational foundation set up to help the local community) has moved a long way away from it original premise. Therefore can I ask why: Are buses allowed to park throughout Towney road at any time? Why are students and teachers who obviously don't live local allowed to park in the surrounding streets? Towney, Dovercourt, Beauval? (eg Why are they introducing parking restrictions around ed station when more people park at Allenys?) Do we put up with gridlocked traffic, double parked cars during school times? Dulwich College and Jags do quite a lot of work with the local community. I am struggling to think of anything that Alleyns has produced or contributed to the local area apart from traffic, swine flu, a helicopter once a year and appalling mismatched building design (eg if you have ever been refused planning permission for a loft check out Alleyns wtf?). Why are we putting up with this? Should the council pressure them to do more for the local community eg giving more local places, free up resources.? Thats my whinge for the day...

Heard that Hotel du vin have put in a bid for the Dog in Dulwich village. Whatever happens M and B will not have a renewed lease. The condition of new lease being pub has to stay open ground floor.

Kings College Hospital Rugby Club, plays every Saturday at the Griffin Club in Dulwich village. We have many single men, many facially challenged, but the beer and wine is cheap (which helps with looks). Pop down after 3pm - all welcome.

Hi A quick update - a guy knocked on my door yesterday (beauval rd) with what appeared to be window cleaning kit, he said he was working two doors up etc., could clean windows for ?10 - which i paid (I was holding baby and feeding rest of siblings ie not paying attention). He never turned up. Since he was so good at the gab I imagine that this is a regular con. So: for me and anybody reading this, next time get a biz card, pay after job, and dont be so trusting! FYI he is fifties, white, gift of gab and doesn't clean windows.

Dont worry about Bailiffs, they wont and cant raid your house. But do register with experian or something similar and monitor your credit rating. I have been cloned about five times and now if someone tries to apply for credit being me I get an email warning - even if it is someone else registered at your address.. Re; your property - Your address pays some points towards your credit rating but unless your the owner not enough to cause problems.

Slightly odd, I was there when it happened (sneaky pint in plough), the guy was hit and then within three-five mins the helicopter, plus 4 ambulances, and 8 squad cars were onsite, plus plain clothes coppers. Happily the guy was sitting up, though seemed in bad way - you dont really want to look. All I can imagine was the car that did the hit and run was being followed before accident either that or the police, ambulances etc were on top form...

My best mate lived under Barry george off the Fulham road for 5 years. Barry played Queen all the time and had kitchen foil on his windows. Every few weeks we would have to go upstairs and tell him to shut up. Also he would pester the girls visiting our flat which we would also have to tell him was unacceptable. But, when Jill Dando was shot I said to my mate I bet they pin this on George as he was Fulhams resident nutter and they did. This was a guy deeply disturbed, but also incapable of washing his own clothes, paying bills etc., he never did it ...
