What does the 4+ assessment involve for prep schools?
pebbles replied to srisky's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I agree with JessM. I think they like to see that the children are willing to try things so they're not necessarily looking for that child who can complete the puzzle easily but more the child who is willing to have a go at everything on offer :) I think they do also see about phonics and writing their name but in an easy way so as not to pressure the child. I think it's purely down to how your child wakes up that morning and whether s/he is prepared to leave you firstly and secondly take part in the activities (if that makes sense). Good luck. -

Do you need a sink in a utility room
pebbles replied to motorbird83's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We have a sink however our utility room also has a loo so a sink is necessary. I love it - for our tumble drying to empty out the water, to soak clothes, to wash rugby boots, i soak my pot plants and hanging baskets in there - HOWEVER all of that can be done in the kitchen sink or a bucket and if storage is an issue then I'd probably say go with storage!!! Sorry that's not very helpful at all!!! -
Can anyone please help my husband. He is Best Man next weekend and has a video that was filmed on an iphone and has been converted to a .4mv using Microsoft. It has dreadful background noise and we really really need to get rid of the background noise. Is there anyone out there that we can pay to help us please. Many thanks Sally

Rugby Classes for little boy - advice needed

Ruggerbeez at Belair Park. Both mine have been doing it since then and it's just amazing. Better than some of the others we tried :) -
I've just spent the day in Covent Garden and the Southbank. A great bus ride there, sooooo much to do, people watching, sandpits, free beano exhibition, skate board park to try out/watch etc etc. We all came home with big smiles on our faces

Recommendations for child's single bed
pebbles replied to MrsAk's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Both mine have got a day bed from Ikea which pulls out to a double so their bedrooms can then double up for guests or sleep overs. 3 big drawers underneath as well which is always helpful :) -
My friend had really really bad SPD and she went to Russell of Dulwich Physio details here 163-169 Crystal Palace Road London SE22 9EP 020 8693 9930 He revolutionised her pregnancy. I've also seen him for back pain that I had post pregnancy and he sorted me out immediately. Highly recommend him

Oh yes dbboy that would be a good idea :) Basically the paper keeps getting jammed. I've made sure the paper is inserted properly etc but when it tries to suck the paper up it makes a really funny noise and it takes one side of the paper more than the other hence the jamming. Thanks Sally

I wonder if anyone knew someone locally who could fix my canon printer? I've done a search and haven't come up with anyone. Thanks

Prep schools - reception 2014, are we too late?
pebbles replied to Poppyjen's topic in The Family Room Discussion
DUCKS would be a definite no go as that really is as soon as you are pregnant as they take kids from (I think) 6 months) Dulwich Prep (where my kids are) will have their assessments Dec-Jan (depending on your sons birthday) and although it is assessment based but I would get your sons name down soonish so that you're 'in the system'. There are 3 classes in Nursery and then it moves to 4 in Reception - my son's class had 3 "new boys" in reception so lets say that's 9 across the 3 original classes and then there's a new class of 20 so last year there were 29 Reception places (not sure how many applicants I'm afraid). Herne Hill is another option that although it is first come first served for the early stages I'm pretty sure that 4+ is assessment based (however there are obviously a lot of children already at the school that will get automatically put through). I don't know too much about Oakfield or Rosemead in terms of applications except that I'm pretty sure they're assessment based as well. So we live in ED (Friern Road) and mine go to DP on Gallery Road and I don't walk - basically for my two it would just be too far at the beginning of a very long day or even worse at the end of the day. However like you I don't like doing the 'school-run' so what I try and do is drive to the Court Lane entrance of Dulwich Park and then scoot/cycle through the park, across the chapel and then up Gallery Road. It's a lovely walk and not too far for their legs :) Good luck with the move and I hope everything goes well with the schools. -
We just treated ourselves to one on Friern Road :)

Stay at home/part time working mum meet up
pebbles replied to laney1's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My kids are old now (well not really old but nearly 6 and 4!!!) but i just wanted to say that 3 years ago I met up with a group of mums because of a thread exactly like this and 3 of them are now very much some of my closest friends. On Monday 2 of our families are off on holiday together in France, at New Year 3 of our families all went away together, we regularly see each other as families and as mums with the kids. I suppose I just wanted to say that even if you think you have a great nct/baby group do go along cos you never know who'll you meet :) I hope you have a wonderful meet up xxx -
Am I making a horrible mistake? (Newborn naps)
pebbles replied to Emski's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Oh Astrid83, how horrible to have a health professional make you feel stressed. your baby is 4 weeks old and so so so small. Just do whatever feels right and makes you (and him) happiest. I have to say i have always been very routine routine routine BUT at 10 wks just go with the flow. You are doing nothing that will deter her from sleeping comfortably in her cot when you are ready to do it. It's such a difficult stage because you're just soooo tired at this point. You're doing brilliantly and just keep doing whatever feels right :) Good luck to you both and as my Mummy always said "s/he will not be sleeping on your chest on their wedding night so don't worry" or with regards to his fussyness with food "don't worry darling, he won't be having jam sandwiches for his wedding meal" xxx -
My son is in reception and they're mixing up the classes for next year and then they'll spend 2 years in the same class and then I think they're mixed up every year until they leave. Personally I think this is a good idea as it allows the children to spread their wings a bit and meet new friends and at the end of the day they can play with their old friends in the playground as well. Have they give you a reason as to why they're stopping it?

Non-toxic nail polish - where to buy in London?
pebbles replied to matnurse1983's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I use Only Fingers and Toes (OFAT) and just love it http://www.onlyfingersandtoes.co.uk -
I would be very very jealous :) My mother has just renovated a house and has made an upstairs utility room and it works perfectly. It would definitely be a selling plus for me :)

Was your car in there when they block? How utterly selfish of your neighbours - sooooo annoying. I just did a quick search and came up with this - hope it helps http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080829114344AA0Rehr

How many bedrooms are there currently and how many will there be? I think that will make a difference to people's answers. We have a loft conversion (just the one bedroom) and it has an ensuite. It's my son's bedroom and he uses the loo but not the shower however as he gets older we do envisage him using it. We bought the house and it was already converted. If we were to have done it as we already have 2 bathrooms (and a loo downstairs) I think we would have opted for the bigger storage. Hope this helps Good luck x

OK, you've persuaded me :) I'm off to Amazon to buy the book. I think i'm only going to blog maybe twice a week though as I would want to keep it up and I don't want to set my sights too high :) HOWEVER, i've just logged onto my blog and its saying: Fatal error: Call to undefined function get_editable_roles() in /home/pebbles/public_html/wp-content/plugins/jetpack/modules/stats.php on line 219 I have a wonderful "friend" on twitter who is an expert on WP so I've emailed her asking what it means so hopefully that is fixed before I get my book deliered I look forward to reading all of your posts http://www.pressiesbypebbles.com ps - can we please keep posting our blog links after every EDF entry so we don't have to scroll back - thanks
