  5. we've never been to EOTR but we have been several times to a festival on the same site in July, just called 'Larmer tree festival' So we get to experience the peacocks and general loveliness of the site, but with a different lineup (world and folk music) and lots of children's craft tents. At Larmer tree I would say about 75% of the attendees are familes with under 18s in attendance. But can you tell me, at EOTR, are there some children? Is is a bit family friendly? Is the playground open?

Actaully I think it's closer to something like Will Self's 'Quantity theory of Insanity'- in which he thinks that there's a certain amount of insanity in the world, and if one person gets a bit saner somewhere, someone else will lose it just a little bit. So There's a finite quantity of discrimination in the world, and there's always someone being discriminatory. If they stop, someone else will start. If we get the gay thing under control (which we havent and I'm basically with James on most of what he said, and I also mostly agree with Sean's last post), then everyone with longer second toes will be in the firing line. Or, it's like wearing control underwear. You can smooth down the tummy and arse but the flesh has to get shoved somewhere.
  11. true, wembley is not a good place for a gig unless you are in the really expensive seats and then you may as well spend that sort of monsy on a night out in a poncey restaurant. But when I saw her (not on this tour though) It was pretty good. Big tours suck. I'm going to try the goose is out next time.

  15. Most operate a catchment area but it shifts depending on applications each year so there are some roads that you cant be sure of. Also, if a school becomes more popular like Heber has done recently, then a road that was a safe bet two years ago may not be anymore. but for Dulwich Village maybe Glengarry rd, maybe Playfield crescent. Townley road...?
  16. C'mon Will Dex! that's an album title! Nights in White Satin- Moody Blues

  18. so your gay friend in the pub uses the word as a slur. I'm not going to deny that's true or say that anyone lives in a bubble. But i will say this: Just because a gay person uses the word to mean crap doesn't mean it's OK. They are just as wrong as Chris Moyles is. And you should tell them so. I imagine they think that as they are not in the company of any homophobes or children then it doesnt matter. but they are in a public place reinforcing a negative sterotype. More fool them.
  19. there are some very interesting well thought out posts on here. And then there's Huguenot. as cdonline pointed out, it's not about economic status, but cultural and social status. this is a society where homosexuality was illegal for hundreds of years, it's only relatively recently been decriminalised. and then marginalised. and now starting to become mainstream. It's actually only 5 years since the despicable clause 28 was repealed. There have been other more positive changes, of course civil partnerships and the change to adoption and IVF laws to make things more inclusive. But this all so recent! I'm also amazed that so many people on this thread think that stonewall's report into homophobic bullying is so trivial. (I'm not entirely sure that anyone actually read the case studies) of course kids get bulllied, for many different reasons. But when that bullying is reinforced by the whole school, teachers, and in the home, and on the radio........thats when we use the word endemic. and see it as a real problem, just as racist bullying was seen, and is now dealt with (within schools at least). Here's an example for you: a young teenage boy I know thinks that the word 'gay' he uses (often in school) to describe things that are crappy and lame (that gay car, that gay jumper etc...) is not the same word 'gay' that applies to his own Auntie. Now i've explained to him that it's not a wild coincidence that the two words are the same he's thinking about it a bit more. But why didnt one of his teachers stop him before now? 21. Examples did you say? Stonewall published a report last year into bullying and homphobia within schools- that's British schools, happening now. They found that Homophobic bullying is almost endemic in Britain's schools. Almost two thirds (65 per cent) of young lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils have experienced direct bullying. Seventy five per cent of young gay people attending faith schools have experienced homophobic bullying. They published the report on their website, you can all read the evidence and case studies here: http://www.stonewall.org.uk/education_for_all/research/1790.asp Some teachers were found to back up the bullies, some used God as their defence for telling the children in question about what is 'wrong' and what is 'right' As a result Ed Balls asked them to set up guidelines helping schools to move forward. Schools are now being encouraged to have a policy on homphobic bullying. Using 'gay' as a word for 'rubbish' and accepting it as harmless is utterly poisonous.
