The DIY shop chap with the amazing hairdo is called Malcolm - I've known him for over 20 years and the hairstyle was just the same back then. On the subject of the so-called "White Lady", I used to see "her" frequently in The Phoenix on Denmark Hill station and in other locations - all in the vicinity of the Maudsley - and I became pretty convinced that "she" was no lady.

plough in 1989? any one used to go in
Bony Fido replied to gregstar's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
1989 in The Plough - aaaah! the good old days.I remember Steve and Viv from Bolton - they were a lovely pair!! The plough was a major darts pub back then, just before it was ruined by the "refurb". You'll probably find that any remaining regulars go to the Castle these days. -
Help the Aged (bag collection)

Perhaps the charities are resigned to finding that stuff left out for them has been nicked by crooks, and have given up trying to get there first? -
Bucking the trend in property prices

Melbourne Grove house is slightly down in asking price already:- http://www.woosterstock.co.uk/Detail.php?id=5209 -
When I got home from work yesterday, I found that some one has filled to the brim with earth the 3 garden waste wheelie bins belonging to our flats, and left them on the pavement outside (one has been left on its side - half on/off the road.) These bins are the same size as a large dustbin - anyone know what capacity? - and they are now impossible to move. I have reported this to Southwark Council via the fly-tipping section on their website today.

How about the famous Phat Phuc noodle bar just off the Kings Road in Chelsea :- "http://www.allinlondon.co.uk/restaurants/restaurant-2391.php"

The company is Jennings:- (http://www.joejennings.co.uk/aboutus.htm ). Why a small firm like this wants to open next door to Wm Hill is a bit of a mystery, maybe they hope to pick up those who are fed up with Hills and Ladbrokes etc.. - of which there must be plenty.

the mysterious case of the missing wheelie bin
Bony Fido replied to nancysmum's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I live in a block of flats where we have 6 wheelies alongside the building - we "acquired" an extra green bin a few weeks ago - i.e. someone dumped it there presumably. Haven't a clue where it came from though (we're in Pellatt Rd.) -
The rates for the new gym which is scheduled to open in September (next to Thomas More hall) are at :- "http://www.esphysicalhealth.com/go/fees"

The lovely guy who works in the "Cheers" shop opposite the Thomas Moore Hall on Lordship Lane is leaving tonight. He's going to work somewhere in the Old Kent Road. This shop has often been quoted on EDF as having the most friendly staff in ED and the man will be missed by regular visitors to the shop.

Having read good reports on Hoopers on this forum I was looking forward to visiting them - unfortunately the first time I went on a Thursday afternoon they were closed (don't open till 5.30 or so) and last Saturday when I went at about twenty to six in the evening there was only one person in the place, and he was standing behind the bar, so I gave it a miss. I hope I'm wrong but my current impression is that there isn't much future for Hoopers.

No it ain't just in your head spoony - my Mrs is totally fed up with it - don't know where it's coming from, though. We live at the junction of Landcroft and Pellatt, and it sounds to be within a few hundred yards. Perhaps if I can muster the strength I might venture out to investigate (once the pubs are open that is)

The Plough has been owned by the same chain for at last the last 30 years - it was a Charringtons pub in 1979 when I first moved to Dulwich (this was part of the Bass group back then , they have subsequently become part of Mitchell and Butlers current empire.) The "Goose" and later "JustSo" brands are (were)part of the same chain.

bawdy-nan wrote :- "Did you know that the Chinese Elvis currently starring in Martha Josie and the Chinese Elvis actually lives in East Dulwich. I read a profile on him in which he mentioned the sacred SE22. His name is Paul Hyu and he used to stand in sometimes at Gracelands Palace. His website is pretty extraordinary." My wife and I with a couple of friends went to see this very enjoyable comedy in Woking about a month ago - it was very good indeed. I never thought much of Maureen Lipman before, but seeing her in this made me realise just what a great actress she is. On the subject of Mr Liu's, when I first moved to SE22 in 1979 this was a quite pricy French style restaurant.I can't remember what it was called but it was run by a big bearded chap called Nico Ladenis who later became very famous in foodie circles (Chez Nico, Simply Nico etc.) After he moved it was home to an excellent upmarket burger place called Big Apple - unfortunately it was probably too good for the SE22 of the early 80's - only lasted a couple of years, then came Mr Liu.

Residential Parking Zones in streets off LL
Bony Fido replied to mixulee's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Southwark Council did suggest a "Controlled Parking Zone" in SE22 a few years ago, but there was a lot of opposition from locals and the scheme was dropped. I think far more people would be receptive to the idea now though, especially those living close to ED rail station, as roads near there are just crammed with cars belonging to commuters from outlying areas every weekday. The 37 bus route was forced to stop serving the station via Melbourne Grove because it's aways blocked by parked vehicles. (By the way, I have no axe to grind on this as I haven't owned a car for nearly 4 years.) -
I'd count myself as a "Farty/Tedious" type. But I do like to listen to some of the(would-be?)"Arty/Media" types in the local bars, especially Franklins which seems to attract them. (Having said that, I think Franklins gets a very interesting mix of customers and a very relaxing atmosphere because it doesn't appeal to the rowdy troublesome element - what few of them do enter normally don't hang around for long.)

That cat is a bloomin fruitcake!

Clare, "Exactly where did you see Harry Carpenter? Definitely one for the observer book of celebs" Harry used to get his hair cut at Segars,(opposite the Plough)I think he lived close to Dulwich village, but haven't seen him for a few years.Definitely a local though!

Ratty, Re:"Cafe Nero's - should have gone the whole hog and opened a KFC ffs" We've already had a KFC in LL - it is now some other make of fried chicken shop, the one opposite Thomas More hall.Apparently when Col Sanders visited the UK many years ago he was so disgusted at the state of many of the shops bearing his name that he had them closed down - the LL shop was one.

Many scenes for the TV series Dempsey and Makepeace were filmed in the East Dulwich area. One episode I particularly remember used two locations on the south side of Upland Road just east of the junction with Crystal Palace Road. One was outside the "Cafe Ideal",which I believe has only recently had its name and facade changed from how it looked at the time, and the other was the entrance to a yard, which I think was adjacent to number 3 Upland Road. In one episode of Dempsey and Makepeace the villain was played by Nick Brimble, who has been in many TV series (most recently playing Lorraine Chase's evil brother in Emmerdale). I recall seeing him shopping one morning in what is now Somerfield in Lordship Lane in 1980. He lived in Matham Grove at the time.

I arrived back from work at the bus stop outside ED nick at about 10.30 on Wednesday night. There was a young couple standing outside with a dog which was tied to one of the scaffold poles. It looked as though the couple were concerned about the dog - the man (probably Mark) was on his mobile at the time. It looked as though the dog might have been there quite some time judging by the big puddle he/she was standing in. I went to Franklins as it was getting near closing time thinking that "the authorities" would be arriving to take the animal into care. However, as I was returning a woman who said her name was Catherine came up to me and told me about a dog tied up - she was obviously very concerned. She said she rang the on the police phone and was told they would "come out for it" but no one came out. I pointed out to her that ED nick is only staffed 6am to 10pm (last I heard anyway) so they must be coming from another station. I couldn't remember the RSPCA number ( it's 0870 5555 999 ) but it wouldn't have been much help anyway according to Mark. In the end Catherine who said she has pets of her own and lives in Rodwell Road took the dog and went off down the road saying she was going to "the shop" and would ask them to help. The dog was so happy to be untied I thought its tail was going to fly off, it was wagging so fast! It must have had a fair bit to drink because the first thing it did was cocked its leg against the nearest lamp post. I don't know what eventually happened but I think the dog was in good hands.
