  1. A couple of months ago at Victoria station I was rushing to catch the next train to Denmark Hill which was due to depart in less than a minute, but the ticket barrier would not let me through - I tried another one, same problem. The old guy on the barrier asked me if I had a Pay as you go card. I shouted "no, it's a freedom pass and I'm trying to get that train". I was in such a panic that he let me through and I just made it on to the train as the doors were closing. It was only after I got off at Denmark Hill and took my freedom pass out for the bus that I realised why the pass wouldn't work at Victoria - I had been on a night shift and the train was the 6:41 AM! As you say Keef : "The train thing is a real bugger in the mornings"!
  2. I have been using a freedom pass for the last 9 months and ,as you say Eileen, it really gives a feeling of freedom because not only can you hop readily from one mode of transport to another, but also you don't have to worry about renewing every week/month or whatever. When you travel outside the London area even the buses are restricted to journeys after 9:30 am as was the case in London. Unfortunately I don't think Boris will be a staunch defender of our current concessions, bearing in mind that he was cornered into implementing this by Ken Livingstone in the mayoral election campaign.
  3. The Polish shop is brill for lager, vodka etc. and I reckon its business should be helped by the extra punters brought to the area by Sainsburys (they are useless for lager in common with all the big chains except Lidl)
  4. Hope you moved that prostrate OAP closer in to Nero's doorway, Mrs Maxwell - they make jolly good draught excluders!

  8. In the Bishop yesterday I noticed that 2 of the bar staff were sporting moustaches similar to those worn by the ghastly naff pair in one of those "118 etc" TV ads. These were male bar staff by the way, unfortunately there were no girlies serving at the time I was there (about 4pm - 4.30pm) so I was unable to check them for similar sproutings. Anyhoo, you may be thinking "what's so unusual about a couple of blokes with moustaches?", but the other thing was that when I later happened to look up, and I swear I was only on my second pint of Budvar, I realised that the lampshades above the bar had also grown identical facial fungus. Is this some sort of charity stunt, or done for a wager or what? Does anybody out there know? Should I just pretend I didn't see it?

  18. The most likely outcome would appear to be that Somerfield will move to the top of LL and their existing premises will become a Co-op, possibly incorporating a pharmacy to replace the one on the corner of Shawbury Road/LL which is supposed to be closing.
  19. WIndows smashed/missing on the doors and left front window of the Bishop today - clumsy window cleaner or what???
  20. Every morning when I return to SE22 from Westminster after a long hard night protecting Her Maj's Palace from insurrectionists, I reward myself by dropping in to one of the wonderful 24hr off-licences in South London - surely one of the greatest advances of the 21st. century. Just recently I have noticed that whenever I visit the "Payless" shop (opposite The Bishop in LL) the chap behind the counter ALWAYS seems to be talking to himself. Closer inspection reveals that he has a pair of white earphones plugged in to his aural orifices, and he rabbits away incessantly to persons? unknown while totting up the damage for my shopping and taking my money. Not only does this seem to me to be extremely rude, but also I fear for his long term health. Does anybody know whether this is only an early morning phenomenon, or does it continue throughout the day? (And if so how do you feel about the lack of communication with his customers?)
  21. Stephanie Calman in Londoners Diary wrote :- Dulwich, my adopted home, has a reputation for being posh and pointless, a view held only by those who don?t live here. Well, it?s their loss. I?m a convert from north of the river, the sort people avoid at dinner parties because I can?t shut up about the superiority of where I live. But Lordship Lane, our high street, is gentrifying ? fast. Right now the balance is just right, but one coffee chain has already appeared, and a city village is a delicate ecosystem. We don?t want to be visiting the Museum of Local Shops in 20 years, do we? And no, we don?t need yet another branch of a certain well-known estate agent with its absurd glass-fronted fridges: ?Have a free Coke!? ?Oh, I?ll certainly buy a house off you then.? Oh, please. We already have cold drinks in South London, thank you; you can go.
  22. According to an article on p10 of the August edition of SE22 magazine, the tree is a "Jubaea chilensis Chilean Wine Palm" (See http://www.mulu.co.uk/plant_info.php?id=713). Apparently it could grow to about 80 feet high over the next 25 years!!!
  23. How about a genuine Saigon style noodle bar? e.g.:- http://www.phatphucnoodlebar.com/
