The great thing about these prominently situated stands is it saves the bike thieves and vandals having to trawl the streets looking for likely targets - now they are all in nicely concentrated locations. Just look at the bike stands up by the London Communications College at the Elephant & Castle for a taste of what's to come.

"Days of 49" I just love the line "they call me a bummer and a gin sot too but what cares I for praise?" The afore-mentioned Visions of Joanna is a beautiful song.

When I first heard that Sainsbury's were moving into that area near the Library, I wondered why. In hindsight it is easy to understand their rationale :- In a compact little area there are effectively 4 grocers/greengrocers,5 off-licences, a baker, 3 newsagents, and recently a butcher. If we can move in and, by hook or by crook, mop up the custom of all these we'll be on a nice big earner. Perhaps they hadn't reckoned with the local customers who obviously appreciate having a choice.

KalamityKel Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > is this now about sainsburys then? Well to quote Stevo above :- "Nisha tells me that the council arrived last night and gave her 20 minutes to move all the veg back to the window or suffer its wrath, a display that as far as I can recall has been that way for twenty odd years" Sainsburys arrive and in less than a month the small shops are getting hassled - perhaps just a strange coincidence. Firms like Sainsburys have a huge influence on local councils and that's a fact. (Try reading "Shopped" by Joanna Blythman if you don't understand the facts).

I trust any Sainsbury's workers/shareholders will be honourable enough to declare their interest when participating in this discussion?

If you have an O2 mobile contract you can get their (up to 8 Meg) broadband for ?7.50 per month. I've had this since July 08 and it's always been reliable. The only thing I would say about it (and this would apply to all suppliers) is, if you're using the wireless facility and have reliability problems, consider changing the channel i.e do not use channels 1,6 or 11 because they can get very congested which causes the signal to drop.

Boycott Sainsbury's - placards, picket lines etc - it's the only way to get back at 'em!!!

I've not tried stilettos (yet) but I reckon these would be better - I've heard many a recommendation for them recently :-Snow chains

You opened it in error didn't you? - didn't you? (nudge) - case closed.

Loz From your list I recommend "Inssider" from www.metageek.net. I have had O2 broadband for over 18 months and it has always worked well on the ethernet cable, but wireless was very unreliable. I was convinced that the router was at fault but O2 support wouldn't have it. After numerous support requests one guy asked me which channel I was on (answer ch.6)and how many others were on ch. 6 in my area. When I said usually 7 or 8 he said that was far too many and told me to try any channel other than 1,6,or 11. (they run from 1 to 13, but 1,6,and 11 are the ones the broadband firms recommend, which is why every man and his dog are on them. I switched to a different channel about a month ago and have had no problem whatsoever since.

I haven't read Justin's book yet but I probably shall. I was diagnosed as Type 2 diabetic about 10 years ago and subsequently have read a great deal on the subject. I also refused to take statins after trying them for a year or so, and suspect that ,along with swine-flu vaccines and many other drugs we are being duped by "Big Pharma",which is such a huge lobbying group in US and UK governments. My experience has been that drugs have had very little effect on my condition, whereas Losing weight and exercising bring very rapid improvement. There is a great deal of reading on this available on line. A couple of my favourite sources are:- Dr John BriffaDr Briffa, and Dr Joseph MercolaDr Mercola. The latter does use his website to peddle numerous foods, utensils, etc.,but is nevertheless very interesting.

Writing Diaries every day. Who does it? What should we do with them!
Bony Fido replied to PeckhamRose's topic in The Lounge
Seems that you are all contributing to a diary that is valuable and interesting indeed - the communal diary of East Dulwich. -
Yes Mick Mac,kids require a lot of time, fortunately we've only the grandchildren to take up some of our time nowadays and,of course, you can generally give 'em back to the parents whenever you feel like it (although they certainly seem to get a good share of our money)!!

(Actually only about 8758 hours left) Assuming 7 hours recommended sleep per night (2555 hrs per annum) leaves about 6200 hours. Work: a minimum of 1938 hours plus 488 hours travelling (or waiting to travel!!) to and from work, leaves about 3780 hours. In the bathroom (Avoiding any further breakdown of this category!) minimum 242 hours. That leaves about 3500 hours, which sounds like a lot - average about 10 hours per day, which means I should have plenty of time for exercise,DIY,helping others, and being an all round good chap, but somehow after I've done a bit of TV viewing, surfing the internet (including ED forum),visiting the pub/off licence and generally lounging around, I never seem to have any time to spare! How about you???

There seemed to be quite a few small balloons powered by naked flames flying over ED just after midnight on January 1st. Does any one know where they were released from?. They looked so much nicer than the overkill of exploding fireworks etc.. I wonder if any regulations eg Air Traffic were being broken? If so - Good on 'em!

Seagull stuck on plant island, Peckham Rye Park 22nd Dec
Bony Fido replied to EDmummy's topic in The Lounge
EDM wrote :-"He was surprised that it had not got out but did not seem interested in doing anything further" This makes me wonder whether the authorities now classify seagulls the same as pigeons (i.e. vermin)?. If so they, along with urban foxes, are the victims of our rubbish society which leaves food out on the streets in flimsy plastic bags. -
Things that make a New Year something to be happy about
Bony Fido replied to Ladymuck's topic in The Lounge
Well thank you very much and the same to you Ladymuck. Unfortunately you have now totally un-Grumped me with your comment - Sadly I shall just have to be happy as we go forth into 2010! -
Things that make a New Year something to be happy about
Bony Fido replied to Ladymuck's topic in The Lounge
Can we have a bit of festive Grumpitude and a little less of this joyful optimistic stuff please? I've had bugger all to moan about since before Christmas Eve! -
What is it that grumpies dislike most about this time of the year? For me one of the main things has got to be all the "Reviews of 2009" etc, as if nothing is actually happening in the world right now.

I first realised I was getting on when,in my mid fifties, if anyone asked my age I actually had to think about it, because there's a certain point when your age makes no difference - you're just OLD!!!
-
Yup - I used to call it "The old git's pass". Now I've got one of my own I suppose I shouldn't call it that but unfortunately it seems even more appropriate now - I seem to have become more of a moaning old git since getting it. (They are also issued to others e.g. disabled etc) PS men get it at 60 (maybe something to do with the equality laws) which means that ,as in my case, men who are still working and earning are getting free travel.I originally felt somewhat guilty over this, but then as people told me I've been paying income tax for 44 years and Southwark council tax since 1979, and this is the first thing I seem to have got out of it.Prior to getting my pass there were many occasions when I got on the bus and seemed to be the only bugger who was actually paying to do so.
