Charter School East - consultations
HannahSE23 replied to @Woodwarde's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Sunglasses I couldn't agree more! I too would far rather the school was bigger and had more space. There's no reason why staff and pupils can't use public transport anyway. -
What do 10yr old boys like re presents?
HannahSE23 replied to yeknomyeknom's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Definitely Lego - Chima or Ninjago. Also second the Bear Grylls books. In fact, anything survival related - den building kit/headtorch etc etc. Equally anything spy related - a door alarm for example. If he's into Minecraft then there's a great series of books based on Minecraft - books one and two are called Invasion of the Overworld and Battle for the Nether. Anthony Horowitz Alex Rider series also very popular in this house! -
Thanks tomskip, that sounds very positive. Can I ask how your son gets there from ED?

I was wondering if anyone had any experience of this school and/or a child who attends... also whether it's possible to get in from Forest Hill Road end of SE22? I'd be really grateful to hear any thoughts. I attended the open morning yesterday and I was impressed, but I've heard mixed reports from others. Please PM if its easier. Many thanks!

Hi mrs.lotte I'd also be interested in the same thing... as you say, fantastic results and Ofsted and also a brand new building, locally I've heard positive things as well. It's also a small school which I like - only 120 a year. Perhaps it's because it's a Catholic school? Be good to hear what others say...

My son spent a few days in Lewisham hospital when he was a baby. He didn't have surgery there but the care we all received was brilliant.

Moving out of London for secondary school?
HannahSE23 replied to HannahSE23's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Just restarting this thread as I'm doing the secondary school visits and I'm feeling totally overwhelmed. It's too late for us to move away before our eldest starts secondary plus both of us work in London so really it's not that feasible, but I suppose I just wanted some reassurance from those who have been through this nightmare that it all turns out okay in the end... It seems there's no choice at all and you get what you're given. The schools seem enormous too! Maybe it's just me but my eldest still seems far too young to be starting big school. I suppose it's normal to panic, but can anyone offer any sane advice and/or reassurance? Thanks! -

Thanks James. Is there any info on how to apply directly to the school yet? An email address or phone number? It all seems very up in the air! -

Does anyone actually know if we'll be able to apply to Charter ED in October for admission in 2016/17? Or is it all on hold? Will there be any 'open days' as such? Thanks -

So don't tell me that all the people who campaigned like crazy for the Charter 2 nodal point to remain in Jarvis Road as that position better serves Camberwell/Peckham actually already have a viable co-ed, non-faith, non-lottery school already on their doorstep??? What was all the fuss about then? -

Could someone attending the meeting tonight please update the rest of us on the outcome? Thanks! -
Great. Thanks verds. I'd seen that online but was waiting to see if anyone recommended it, so thanks!

Hi, my son is really interested in the news and loves to read the metro when we're on the tube, but I worry it's a bit salacious... so I wondered if anyone knew of a decent newspaper specifically for older children that can be delivered and not just read online? Thanks so much!

Hi Redmeghan is picky living only based in Sweden? Do you have to order the doors from there and have to have them shipped over? Thanks -
'Charter East Dulwich' Consultation - call for unity
HannahSE23 replied to Trine Adams's topic in The Family Room Discussion
This thread is getting a bit tedious now... It's very who said what/why are you interested/i never said that. Trine Adams - unfortunately there will be no unity on this matter. It's very heated and understandably so. Everybody wants the best for their children and for their children to get into a decent non faith co-ed school. I reckon we should all crack on fighting as hard as we can for where we want the nodal point to be, then accept if we've won/lost with good grace and move on. -

Charter have ruled out any lottery based system. At the consultation at Heber I remember the head saying that lotteries have been shown not to benefit schools academically, so we know where they're going with that...! It would seem like a fairer option, however. -

Ditto the children of much of ED and Nunhead if the nodal point remains at Jarvis Road. So your point is?? -
Moving out of London for secondary school?
HannahSE23 replied to HannahSE23's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Just another question... do those with teenagers worry about teen stabbings, especially after that poor lad was killed in broad daylight in Sydenham recently? I have a feeling it's an unspoken fear amongst many of those who are leaving London as their kids approach secondary school age... Thanks! -

Yes, but so far they're sticking with siblings taking priority over SEN as they say it won't be an issue because the maximum number of places they expect for siblings will be around 60 meaning there will be plenty of places for those children with special educational needs. I have to agree with everyone else that those on the Charter panel were excellent. It's indeed a thankless task and they came across really well. It was the angry prospective parents that were wholly offputting and would make me think twice about sending my son there!! -

Anger on both sides... the Camberwell contingent who are desperate to cling on to the nodal point in its current position in Jarvis Rd and the ED contingent who believe they have been misinformed by the Charter ED steering group and that the nodal point should be moved south to prevent an overlap of the catchment with the current Charter. Lots of talk of fairness when actually fairness can be skewed each way depending on what suits you and your child best. Heated and a little bit nasty. -

Just got back from the consultation and all I can say is wow! Lots of talk of community which was funny because everyone was shouting each other down. A horrible atmosphere to be honest. We all want the best for our kids but it came across as grasping and selfish and at the expense of common decency. Also interesting was the demographic... whether people were from Camberwell, Peckham or ED they were pretty much all white and all middle class. What made me laugh were the impassioned people who had kids at nursery or whose eldest had only just started reception. It's a long way to go folks! If that's what it's going to be like at Charter you can have my son's place because I won't be sending him there.
