I was brought up in SW9 and went to the local schools there and bought here in 1993 but I have seen what can happen when you do get the down market shops in these areas. I am not a snob and I certainly do not earn the TV producer and hedge funds wages earned in this area but I and others like me in the area also like the nice shops that have come into the area. They would be stupid if they didn't use their business sense to exploit the middle classes with their masses of diposable income. I am sorry if I sound snobby

"What you talking 'bout Willis?" Hill Street Blues...."Be careful out there" Murphy's Mob.....Mainly filmed at Watford's Vicarage road for the football scenes.

No probs, I will bring the Jazz Funk, soul and soulful house to the table!!!! -
Good point Keef, It would be nice to strike a balance....I shop in Iceland and appreciate the good bargains...I must point out how many ED residents looked down their noses at Somerfield until it was jazzed up.

Jah Lush, I have watched England on a regular basis since about 1978 when I was 9 years young and it is always the press who seem to pick the England team. People wonder why we didn't qualify for the world cups in '74 and '78.......I know why....We had people like Mick Channon and Mick Mills playing for us whilst others had the likes of Gerd Muller, Johann Cruijff and Michel Platini playing for them. Ferdinand will sadly keep his place. The press complain about Mclaren but it is they who demanded an English manager and we bloody well got one!! Yes Gerrard and Lampard should work but it doesn't, be bold and drop Lamps! We complain about too many foreign players in the pemier league but they have raised our standards. This is probably the best bunch of English players I have known in my time. How can we expect the great Wenger to buy British when people are asking 30 Million for the likes of Rio. Look at the Ashley Cole situation....We sell him to Chelsea and get 5 Million plus Gallas and clichey ( a better player) gets his chance. Do you remember our old FA head of coaching....."Brazil have got it all wrong"......Let's crack on and get it wrong like them. God help us!!

All I am saying..........Mark One is cheap Tatt and doesn't stand up to the more upmarket shops like White Stuff, ED Deli etc. If they got in we would have the likes of Quality Seconds trying to get in. We don't want to be Lewisham shopping centre, Peckham High street or Streatham...........Do You??

I laughed during the pre season when all of those silly reporters were once again pulling predictions out of their backsides. One prediction in particulaar was the "Spurs will finish above Arsenal" line. I am an Arsenal fan and I quite like Martin Jol but you could also see that Spurs didn't have the necessary players in midfield or defence for the so called experts to come out with such unfounded rubbish. It is easier when you make up your own mind instead of listening to reporters who really hink Rio Ferdinand is a world class player (he couldn't lace Thuram's boots).

Mark One in East Dulwich will attract dross from the surrounding hell holes. It is very down market and wouldn't fit in with the ED image. Natwest had so many banches all over the place, years ago (3 on Curzon street in the West End), they were closed down and now after about 10 years it is the fashion to open up new branches!!

When and why did ED become so poncey?
fonson replied to krosfyah's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I moved to ED in 1993 and back then it had a reputation for being one of the nicer areas of South East London. One of the reasons for the mass middle class influx was that people could no longer afford to buy property in the Clapham area. I come from an ordinary working class family and I appreciate the change in ED. I've seen many West Indians who bought property in areas like ED and Clapham back in the 60's eventually selling their propertys to money no question buyers in the 2000's to go home and live like royalty. Good luck to the people moving to ED now they are nice and friendly and I am proud to be here!! Who decided to call Abbeville road Abbeville village (Clapham)?....That's poncey and hilarious.... Another so called poncey area (Battersea) is where my cousins grew up and they also benefitted from the gentrification of that area because when they sold the family home bought in the 60's by their St Lucian parents, they were all able to put substantial deposits on properties of their own. ED is looking good, be proud and don't worry about any negative outsiders!! -
How many different nationalities in Dulwich
fonson replied to Mogs's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Wow, ED is a true melting pot. Have any of you got good tips for tracing your roots? I have learnt a lot about the indenture scheme because my grand mother was Indian and travelled to St Lucia many years ago. I have sent numerous e mails to the St Lucian records office but no replies. I will just have to book up and search for myself. -

I am South London born and bred with a St Lucian father of Indian decent and Jamaican mother. -
Yes, out of order but still very funny. Dave Chappelle got a lot of stick from the black veiwers in the US with his near the knuckle sketches. They are very funny but make you wince at the same time. He however is picking fun at black (he is black, just in case you do not know who he is)stereotypes.......eg. The Black supremacist

Mark Thomas is great and is a South London man. I saw him in Catford a couple of years ago.....He and Rob Newman are good pals.

Keef, I get your point and I do remember that episode of The Mrs Merton show. Manning actually said, "A dog born in astable is stilla dog so a P*** born in Britain is still a P***" (What a sad man). When you see an audiance with Manning you get the impression that no other races would be welcome there. Watch Pryor or Chappelle and you see a pretty mixed venue but I suppose it will have more black faces than most.
-
Whose comedy do you find unacceptable/Acceptable?............Dave Chappelle? Jim Davidson? Chris Rock? Bernard Manning? Richard Pryor? Roy Chubby Brown?.................and Why?
-
Keef, I don't feel so bad now. It couldn't have been more than 11 years ago because I have been in ED for 13 years now. There was a black comedian on Have I got news for you a couple of weeks ago who is on at the EDT at the moment. If only Richard Pryor could pop in to see us in ED,he was the master!

I managed to miss Both Mark Thomas (had booked a flight to Gemany) and Eddie Izzard (I was off to the Southport weekender)at the EDT back in he mid 90's......What bad luck!!!

I am listening to Soul, Jazz Funk and US House. A fellow ED resident and I (amongst others) will be attending the Southport Dance Music weekender this weekend. There are rumours of a certain Stevie Wonder attending! I've seen many greats there over the years......Donald Byrd, Roy Ayers, Jean Carne, Maze, Beverly Knight (before she lost the heavy brummie accent)and Incognito...to name a few. DJ's Norman Jay, Louie Vega/Masters at Work, Jazzy Jeff, Joey Negro..The list goes on. I am currently listening to Solar Radio on SKY digital channel 0129 or www.solarradio.com (Great msic) and some great Philly music. My daughter also makes sure I listen to her wheels on the bus CD!! Where are the soul heads on the forum?

Hello Fellow Gooners, I have been a supporter since the irish days back in 1977 when I was 8 years young. My Mother bought a mini model of Charlie George from East Street market. It was great just paying ?1.10 to stand on the north Bank in crowds of 57,000 against Liverpool back in the eighties. This season has seen a massive transition with young players making their mark on the cup scene and playing big roles in the premiereship. It's great to be in contact with gooners in ED after 13 years of living around here!

We have a vixen and her 2 cubs at the bottom of our garden, they seem pleasant enough.

Does anyone know the history of the local road names in ED? In particular, Matham Grove, Elsie Road and Derwent Road. I got chatting with a charming elderly man (95 years) on Tintagel crescent who talked about the WWII bomb and the local dairy stables on Dog Kennel Hill.
