New East Dulwich Primary School 161/80 + 102
bemusED replied to James Barber's topic in The Family Room Discussion
james - I understand that more spaces are required. what alarms me is your statement that bulge classes result in schools performance 'diving' and so I asked you to substantiate on that.? -
New East Dulwich Primary School 161/80 + 102
bemusED replied to James Barber's topic in The Family Room Discussion
james i'm concerned by your parting shot here. "The alternative plan from the current council is to have 7 or 8 bulge classes in the area every year. Which with only 10 schools would soon swamp those schools and see performance dive." we are making our final decisions about primary places for our kid this week. we are reliant on east dulwich schools having bulge classes in 2013 to convince ourselves of our choice for a place locally. you appear to have evidence though which suggests that schools with bulge classes see a notably drop in performance. can you share that ASAP? -
are you a business offering a service or are you doing 'research'?

bemusED replied to EDdownunder's topic in The Family Room Discussion
check out this from dept Education http://www.education.gov.uk/schools/performance/ enter your post code and you can filter by distance and performance etc and this from southwark http://www.southwark.gov.uk/download/6403/starting_primary_school_in_southwark_201314 page 18 of most note - gives max admitted distance last year -
surprised no-one has suggested this as a possible site for a Waitrose?!

New out of town shop on East Dulwich Road
bemusED replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
just had a quick look at the planning application form.? a couple of comparative facts for info: - the application is for a retail unit would be 20% smaller than the current Iceland on Lordship Lane - the shop would be less than half of the size of the extended unit which M&S wanted for a Simply Food -
former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
bemusED replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
James Recently some trees along Whateley Road have been pruned back which is all well and good.? This morning though, three modest height mature trees had been cut down to waist level.? The benefits of trees are surely well known, even to council contractors, from air cleansing to local citizen well being.? Mature trees give our streets much of their character and they are the one thing that no one can quickly replace.? - who is driving this policy at the council? - why are such trees being removed? - when will they be replanted? thanks -
we live near the police station and are outside of the 2012 maximum entry distance 'catchment' for our three closest schools (we are not religious so have excluded St Anthony's and Dulwich Infants etc). nonetheless, we have visited most of the local schools in the area to get a grasp of them all and have come to these conclusions: - they are all ok schools, ie there isn't any one school which needs to be particularly avoided - most of the schools are having to survive ?in their old Victorian buildings? - the head teacher has the potential to have a profoundly fundamental impact on the school, eg Goose Green's recent improvement? we are curious though to have other's opinions on Besemmer Grange.? It's a bit hidden away and unknown but?appears to have a lot going for it - unlike the other victorian schools, the buildings are refurbished 1960s and the place feels like it has actually been designed with kids and education in mind - the outdoor spaces are well split for the different ages, with individual courtyards for the youngest classes - the facilities are generally better than the Victorian alternatives with?separate dining room and assembly hall for example - the classrooms are great open, airy spaces with views out over grass and trees - pupils can use the facilities of JAGS playing fields and pool next door - the teachers appear very conscious of ensuring the kids of different abilities are supported accordingly? - it feels really creative? - the ongoing work by parents to enhance the outdoor wooded area opposite the entrance shows they are engaged in the schools future - it has a high proportion of free school meals pupils yet it's results are better than Heber/ Goodrich/ Goose Green - but Besemmer is notably undersubscribed, with very few first preference choices and we are not sure why does anyone have kids there who can share experiences? is anyone else seriously considering it as a preferred choice? any advice appreciated thanks?

lets get some joined up thinking here... challenges: - some people want iceland to stay - some people want an m&s / waitrose? - most people want a police station locally - the police though are selling their property on crystal palace road?http://search.knightfrank.com/rss120286 - the police are also planning to leave their premises on lordship lane opportunity: - retain iceland as is - police downsize to crystal palace road - police station on lordship lane is demolished to make space for new M&S / Waitrose

I'm on three. you are right to be worried, it's not good. i can't use my mobile in my house and the 3G network often drops in town even when signal is full strength. I can't recommend it.

cause it's an anagram of HERO BEARD?

I'm on 3 mobile in se22 I thought I'd try it on a monthly rolling contract due to their confident advertising claims, before commuting long term. thankfully I did that as it is truely woeful. at most I get a 1-bar signal in my house and it switches to 'searching' or 'no service' every 5 minutes or so, therefore rendering it useless for calls at home. was on o2 before and signal coverage never an issue here over 6 years. conclusion - I cannot recommend 3 mobile in se22...

I'm an architect and i've looked at the plans submitted from the plans it is clear that the existing store has basically NO back of house storage which makes it unviable for a new retail tenant to simply move in if iceland have to leave. No serious retail tenant would take on this unit without notable alterations to provide adequate back of house - it would likely become yet another estate agent which add nothing to the daily lives of those who live here the proposed retail shopfloor is marginally bigger than Iceland is currently. the proposed ground floor extension provides a suitable back of house storage area which could actually mean FEWER deliveries the height of the residential units is the SAME as the existing building - the volume of the second floor accommodation is identical to the existing the actual volume of the residential units at first floor level will REDUCE as it removes the projections towards the rear and replaces them with gardens the vacant floors over the retail are being upgraded to become a modest development of 8 residential apartments - in line with council and government policy Anyone who lives centrally in East Dulwich can benefit from its great facilities, particularly the rejuvenated high street. Others will come to shop on Lordship Lane, and yes some will come by car. If you are lucky enough to live on Chesterfield Grove, Ashbourne Grove etc then the luxury of living in such a central location will always have the downside of shoppers sometimes parking outside your house. I get it too on market days - that's life. the complete consultation list is on the website this is a simply food store - no bras etc CONCLUSION this is a very modest proposal which will give this unit a future and releases vacant floors for housing in a central location - hard to see why the council would refuse it

would talking to your neighbour not be the first thing to do? as opposed to generating tangental debate on an Internet forum about gorilla suits and disabled children... is technology a help or hindrance? -
