  1. Ah, that is really useful to know. To add, if money is docked through the app I guess that should make its way to the council for public use. Agree probably too difficult but in principle?
  2. If I can move them, I do but often it is many not a few. I am with you on the e-scooters LL. Let's leave those for private ownership, as and when, and encourage more walking. If you can use an e- scooter you can almost certainly walk. If the council is going to sub-let large swathes of public pavement to private e-bike companies then the quid pro quo has to be proper, safe management and hire of those bikes. I still think parking camera cars could monitor drop- off areas and issue on the spot fines for those seen leaving a bike lying on the pavement.
  3. I guess the problem there is when micro mobility hinders Active Travel, which it does if scooters are cluttering up the pavements and left lying around in an inappropriate way. It's classified as micro-mobility rather than Active Travel although it does fulfil a gap for journeys too long for easy walking but not far enough to bother getting a bike out for.
  4. LL, That is an interesting point and one that had not occurred to me. Why do we need both?
  5. No Nigello, not in the same way. Some people may have pets when they shouldn't, but for many they provide essential companionship. But even if there is a wider ethical debate about the wisdom of keeping animals in modern, urban settings, the fact is those animals do currently exist and they are living beings with emotions and should be protected from harm. Part of the problem with fireworks is the randomness. If they were limited solely to one night of Diwali, Bonfire Night and New Year's Eve, then pet owners could prepare and avoid. However, from November right through to Feb, you never know when someone is going to have an impromptu back garden display.
  6. LL, Cllr Rose' use of language is simply astounding. It does read as though she, at least, views TFLs purpose is to create a narrative around changes that support and protect Cllr agendas, whatever the objective truth. To then disover TFL officers were reduced to tears after a meeting with some Southwark Cllrs makes the whole thing look very stinky indeed. It may be clumsy use of language on her part but I think it reads exactly as you say.
  7. Nicely put Legal.
  8. Wanted also to take issue with the notion that the reason bikes and scooters are left lying around is because there is nothing to lock them to? Most hire bikes and scooters have a stand that enables the bike to be parked upright, neatly. It just takes a bit more time and effort to do that and therein lies the problem. Seems lots of users just cannot be bothered. You've got totally the wrong end of the stick here. Bikes are bikes regardless of who owns them. You don't need a permit or agreement with the council to rent or use them in Southwark. The reason we have never had major problems with bikes blocking pavements in the past was because people locked them to things which by their nature don't tend to be right in the middle of pavements. Southwark isn't luring bike rental companies into a trap because they have neither the secrecy nor the legal power to close the trap.
  9. Really useful links Legal. I also noticed that in the earlier link to Southwark plans they are intending to enlarge areas for hire bikes and scooters to be left but also trumpeting inclusivity and how they are monitoring impacts on those with mobility issues. Lots of box ticking rhetoric somewhat divorced from the reality of what is actually happening...as ever.
  10. Don't think Legal said Southwark were trying to lure bike companies into a trap, anywhere? Just expressing surprise that bike hire companies are getting so much access to public paths with little responsibility. Agree with Bicbasher. When out cycling I have felt most intimidated by the behaviour of other cyclists, also by the odd car driver but generally other cyclists who want to go faster. Southwark parking wardens can use CCTV cars to monitor bike and scooter dumping areas at distance, they can catch riders in the act of dumping and fine them. That might be some deterrent.
  11. I din't feel there is a great mystery as to why people dump bikes; they do it because they currently can and can get away with it. Yup, guess many of the 'virtuous' cyclists are just as lazy as those alleged local latte drinking car drivers. There will have to probably be away found to impose on the spot fines. Dumping bikes on the path willy nilly could be viewed as a form of littering and come under PSPOS. Local community/parking wardens could monitor with camera cars and start to issue fines. Draconian, yes but this could get out of control quite quickly, especially in summer months.
  12. Animal welfare is a relevant issue as is the polluting effect of fireworks. I'd be happy to support a Southwark-wide ban on woodburners and coal fires but they really are another issue, in terms of this thread. Fireworks are pure human self-indulgence and as you know Mal they are polluting, but the animal welfare issue tops it for me.
  13. I'd like to see NFNs (No firework neighbourhoods). They are not eco friendly, they are polluting. They can trigger major and costly behavioural disorders in pets. In my view not on a par with going to the pub or cinema. Anyone that objects to car pollution cannot possibly support fireworks.
  14. No way on this earth will 'Big Dog' accept any role other than top dog. TBH the prospect of his return in any role is horrifying, though no surprise he is trying. We can only hope a majority of MPs put the country first and keep him out.
  15. An example of othering: "Guardian reading, tofu eating, wokerati"
  16. It is just that the idea of saying he is the better bet that sticks in the craw. Truss does not have his 'rhetorical gifts' and is not a skilled dissembler/ liar. Aside from the obvious issue of being stabbed in the front by his own Chancellor, I keep wondering why Boris was so keen to have her instead of Rishi? Clearly he was more than happy to throw the country under the bus for reasons of ego/ vanity. I also wonder if it was a gamble, knowing Truss would fail ( 'hasta la vista baby'). Her brief tenure has also shifted focus from his many misdeeds when in office. If the whole country goes on strike perhaps that would force a General Election. We can only hope.
  17. Is it likely though? Scary thought. It feels like anything could happen at the moment, no matter how crazy.
  18. Good. I pass that way regularly so it will be interesting to see what happens next. On my own street this morning, a locked ( to a post) bike lying on its side, partly blocking the pavement. Perhaps it has been kicked over deliberately, but it is chained to something.
  19. Is that another attempt to shut down an angle that doesn't suit Mal?
  20. But on current evidence the wouldn't be parked like motorbikes, they'd just be left lying in the street. You see the difference is people with motorbikes mostly care about the equipment. It seems many using hire bikes do not give a fig.
  21. Thanks Admin, good call and my bad for posting in LTNs.
  22. Rah, There are already cycle stands there. How, precisely does marked bays or more room stop people leaving the bikes laying around on the ground? I think you know that it won't. It certainly does not make a difference to how Lime bikes are left on Lordship Lane. Even in the area described, across from Peckham Rye, there is plenty of room to place the bikes, one just gets the impression it is too much trouble for the user. Easier to leave it lying on the pavement, wherever they choose to dismount. I understand that your argument for marked bays is simply another way to achieve your agenda of forcing car users out, but I really do not think it addresses the issue here.
  23. I forgot my phone or would have posted a picture. Junction of Barry Rd next to pedestrian crossing and entrance to Peckham Rye Park. A jumble/ heap of around 20 Urban Forest hire bikes strewn around the pavement. Unsightly, a hazard and just plain wrong.
  24. The psychology of the speeding cyclist seems similar to that of the speeding motorist. In fact, I think the latter are often high-handed converts from the former. Rah Nx is already car free on Saturdays fir the market, no real need to make it so full time. BTW have you sold your own car yet?
  25. Beats me why an allegedly socialist administration is spending so much time, effort and money turning one of the wealthiest parts of the borough into a traffic- free utopia, letting those on the fringes take the hit from traffic increases.
