How the heck did you find & manage your builder?
Giacomelli replied to cantthinkofaname's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi! My only advice is be prepared to wait for the good ones. I waited 4 months for my builder (just a bathroom refurb!) and was happy I did. Can give you his details if you like but is now booked until January. My friend recommended him but he is also on checkatrade. Checkatrade is better than mybuilder as I think with mybuilder the tradespeople pay to get your work (maybe the great ones dont need to?). However, again, the checkatrade ones are usually really booked up. I have been trying to find someone to tile my hallway for aaages and I also have had guys not replying with a quote. I reckon because it's not a massive job and the good ones can pick and chose what they do. Good luck! -
We did too. Not the cheapest but worth every penny.

Sounds like he lived life to the full. Bless him x

Advice re neighbours and music...
Giacomelli replied to Madison's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I could understand if you were playing hardcore stuff with loads of sweary words/sexism etc etc but sounds like she it's stuff you hear on the radio! Sounds like she should move to a remote Scottish island. If I were you I would go round and explain the reasoning behind give and take and about city living. My previous neighbours got a trampoline for their kids that the whole of east dulwich played on so I never felt guilty about having the odd loud boozy bbq or letting shouty 2 yr olds "express themselves" in the garden. As others have said she is in for a shock once her boys get into their teenage years, you will probably be helping her if you go round and talk it out. If she is happy for their fort to be so far away from her "fort" then she needs to realise that the bubble can't extend into your garden too. If she had wanted to control what was in their environment she should have built the fort closer to home! Just nuts can't believe some people. -
Crofton Park or Sydenham next?
Giacomelli replied to Cats_pyjamas's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We love Sydenham (and we live in the "dodgier" end), moved here earlier this year with toddler and baby. I now do so many more trips into town to museums etc because transport better than East Dulwich (option of penge east station too as well as Sydenham) There is also lots of great stuff to do locally with children. Definitely a bit rougher round the edges than ED but you can at least get a seat at a caf during the day (was finding ed had gotten mega crowded) And we like the parks in Sydenham and proximity to Crystal Palace. The queue in dulwich park cafe on a Saturday morning had gotten beyond ridiculous!! Haha! Ate in trattoria raffaele's on Tuesday night and it was delicious... However also know someone who has just moved to crofton park and is very happy there. I just wish Sydenham had a cinema. Maybe one day...! -
Where to go for a 'cool' haircut for my teenage son?
Giacomelli replied to sillywoman's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Mems has a very manly feel to it. They have bottles of bourbon and brandy near the leather sofas... Always tempted to crack into them when my son is getting his hair cut!! Blue tit is tres cool looking from the outside. I wasn't very cool when I walked in and asked for a coffee when they first opened (it looks like a trendy cafe from the outside!) -
We only just started so don't have any to swap yet but will keep you updated

Soz thought this was a new post... I see I have commented twice. I don't work for them!!!

North facing garden - thoughts?
Giacomelli replied to Cats_pyjamas's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Yes agree it really depends on the neighbouring trees or light-blocking buildings. We actually had a little south facing garden in ed and neighbouring trees really shaded it so the grass became quite boggy. My soil had high clay content so constantly in shade was a bit of a nightmare. Now I have a very open north facing back garden and much of it is in sun throughout the day due to no trees (less privacy though!). I have also put a bench in my south facing front garden so that if I want full on rays I can sit there. I used to sit out in my front garden in ed too with a morning coffee. Front gardens are under used in my opinion! -
Hi The latest report online was published on 7th Feb 2014 from an inspection in late 2013. They receive a"good" rating. My son went there from age 10 months to almost 2.5 yrs. we only left as we moved house. It is a small nursery and has a very homely feel. The staff are lovely and my son was very happy there. In fact, I wasn't prepared for the withdrawal symptoms he would have when I took him out. He still talks about the staff 9 weeks on!! He learnt a lot too as there was a lot of individual attention. The outside space is a bit small and like many nurseries the admin needs improved which is why they may seem "shady". The staff always had time to speak to me if I had concerns and I noticed that children were there for a long time so my son made some lovely friends who he really misses seeing now.

Is it advisable to change GP when pregnant?
Giacomelli replied to gatt4950's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I moved gp at 38 weeks due to a house move. Wasn't a problem. -
Scooter taken outside Dulwich park cafe
Giacomelli replied to sfc22's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Such a shame and sad if intentionally stolen. I am on the Sydenham mums fb group and someone else just reported a stolen scooter in crystal palace park too. Hope you find it x -
I made friends thru Nct and through local activities. So not essential. It was great for my husband as he meets one of the dads at least once a fortnight. As he missed out on maternity leave Nct was the only way he could have made dad friends. Your own research is better than anything a class can teach. I was lucky in that I had uncomplicated births but those who had difficult ones on my Nct felt under prepared. Definitely worth going to NHS ones as you pay nowt and I asked the midwife a fair few questions. Good luck x

Too big for a cot - too small for a bed?
Giacomelli replied to CocoC's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi We went to a hotel that didn't have any cots when my son was 22 months. He loved the novelty of it. He fell out twice but remained asleep. It wasn't to high up. Often the extra beds in hotels are quite low, so you could ask? We moved him permanently to a single bed at 27 months. 1 month on he still falls out occasionally. Or you could cosleep if it is just a night or two? -
The old 32 week one now takes place at 36 weeks instead. It's not just for research but to look at growth and position of the baby. I was called back at 38 weeks to double check something. Although I would say a scan at 36 weeks is not exactly comfortable, it does give you extra reassurance.

No post since Christmas - near Overhill Road
Giacomelli replied to Laur's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think it's best to call the customer service line and get an official case number. I did this and my parcels were found... -
To be fair to the council, I find that now you pay they can't really find many excuses not to take it. I find it a nuisance that you have to select from a drop down menu what you are chucking, because the item you want to throw is not there. But on both of the 2 occasions I have used the bulk collections I have just selected a similar-ish item and they have collected. Eg I put kitchen work tops for a whole load of tiles I needed to chuck. I also used this service before it was paid for and not everything was always picked up. I think the best thing to do is share cost with neighbours if you can as you can really get rid of a lot and at the end of the day it's cheaper than using professional waste disposal companies - who I do use for rubble etc. I will be moving to lewisham borough soon and from first look on their website, it doesn't seem they collect as much stuff as Southwark do.

Where to watch fireworks with a 2 year old
Giacomelli replied to Janibarr's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Dawson's heights... You can see everything. Quite a few people who live on surrounding streets go there so even a tiny bit of atmosphere too... My 2 year old has a horrid tantrum if I wake him up so I won't be going up there this eve despite living across from the hill -
We had a great time (with a two year old who was still too young for rides but loved the lights etc) but we always go at start Dec no idea if it is massively busy now.... When we were leaving (1pm) it did seem everyone was coming in!

MEN'S xmas pressie advice - help wanted!
Giacomelli replied to Tanqueray's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Tickets to a Broadway show. -
Yes I see him a lot. Sometimes even in fancy dress. He was in a cleopatra like outfit at the plough bus stop last time I saw him. He is pretty harmless, can occasionally be a nuisance when he is waving a can of lager about, but nothing to worry about. My toddler and I usually give him a wave.

I think they are flea bites. When I moved into my flat the previous owner's cat had left them there. I actually got them on my thighs and wrists as strangely they waited until I went to the loo to bite me... It was there that I actually saw one for a split second. As tiny as the top of a pin. I used those flea bomb things and spray and hoovered 3 times a day, but still had to get professional help. The bites are the most itchiest thing ever though so sympathies. I think they itch more at night due to you lying down or less adrenaline? Not a scientist but I remember reading that they are worse at night.

Hello Putting this one in lounge as not technically East dulwich related. Current ed resident but halfway through a purchase of a house in Sydenham. Just got the property info forms and seen that the school that house backs on to is planning on doing fairly major construction works. They have not made any planning application yet so no info on council website etc. Longshot but do any Sydenham lurkers on here know what they plan to do? I have emailed school directly and will call tomorrow. Have posted on Sydenham forum but not sure if anyone goes on there! No replies yet! The school in question is Our Lady and St Philip Neri. Thanks in advance
