  1. Thanks for all your very helpful responses.
  2. It's for my niece who's just turned two, so I doubt it needs to be very big. Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Her Mum is keen for this to be her Christmas present from us but I am totally lacking in inspiration as to where to look....
  3. http://www.theguardian.com/culture/gallery/2013/nov/16/architecture-housing A very interesting architectural piece.
  4. That's awful news. Here's hoping the police manage to find whoever took it.
  5. According to Sky News, Southern have already announced that there will be no train services before 9am tomorrow morning because of potential storm debris on the tracks. The Southern website is a little more vague re: the timings of any amended services. I guess we'll just have to wait and see...
  6. I gave St Christopher's a bag of stuff today so it seems as though they are taking donations.
  7. I would also recommend the St Christopher's hospice clothes shop on Lordship Lane.
  8. Apologies if I've missed something in another thread but does anyone know what the outcome of the consultation was? I've noticed that some road works appear to be being undertaken on the section of EDG near Lordship Lane at present. Are these connected?
  9. Photographic evidence attached!
  10. Has anyone else spotted the hilarious typo on the 2013/2014 Register of Electors form? I appear to have been asked to confirm my nationality as shown on my "Assport." Sorry to disappoint you Southwark, but I don't have an "Assport"!
  11. On the subject of East Dulwich shops closing down, I was in Old Villa earlier today and they had their closing down sale on. Sad times.
  12. I wonder whether Waitrose and M&S's reluctance to consider this site is related to the size of the retail space available. From the plans, this unit seems quite small whereas in at least one of the planning applications I've seen for the Iceland site, M&S have mentioned that typically they want a space that's over 900 square metres.
  13. Thanks Chick Pea and IanR. Here's hoping that they get going re: developing the site sooner rather than later. I'd hate the idea of it sitting empty for years. The licensing application certainly makes it sound like things are moving in the right direction.
  14. I was walking past earlier today and noticed that Morrisons have submitted a licensing application for a Morrisons Local at the site of the former garden centre next to East Dulwich station. I'd previously been under the impression that the whole site was being redeveloped to accommodate flats upstairs and a new East Dulwich library. Is this still the case? If so, does that mean that the opening of the new supermarket is still quite a long way off?
  15. Just thought I would revive this thread to say that we received consultation papers through from Southwark Council this morning on a 20MPH zone down East Dulwich Grove from the junction with Lordship Lane to the junction with Hillsboro Road, together with other traffic calming measures (including attempts to make the junctions between East Dulwich Grove and various side roads safer). Here's hoping that these proposals go through.
  16. We're on BT at the moment but feel that it's expensive for what you get. Our BT router stops connecting on average 2-3 times a day. Any recommendations for Internet and TV combo packages would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, S
  17. Check out the following post on fabulous wedding blog Rock My Wedding for inspiration - you should read the commebts as well as the original blog post. Personally, I love the idea of damson gin, home made jam and/ or chutney. A friend of mine had tea bags containing tea leaves from his family's tea plantation in Sri Lanka as favours last year , which I thought was a lovely touch. I also think sunflower seeds in a nicely decorated hessian bag/ envelope would be fab. Happy planning! http://www.rockmywedding.co.uk/to-favour-or-not-to-favour/ S
  18. As a rule of thumb, I've heard that 1 drink per hour per person can be quite a good guesstimate....Other factors to think about is that people tend to drink more if it's hot and white wine tends to be more popular in Summer... But ultimately, as Pickle says, it really depends on your guestlist.... I suspect we would have been well over a half bottle per person quota before the evening party had started, but then again - that was quite predictable! You should definitely consider buying wine on a sale or return basis if you're not sure - unless I'm mistaken, lots of supermarkets including Sainsburys and Tesco now offer this service.
  19. I passed the aftermath of the incident at London Bridge at around 9.30pm last night, and by that stage there was just a guy with a broken nose sitting in a cordoned off area surrounded by a large number of police officers in bullet proof vests... So it looked more like the aftermath of a brawl, but difficult to say...
  20. They wouldn't get away with that at Tesco in Cardiff! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1246722/Cover-No-shopping-PJs-barefoot-Tesco-tells-shoppers-supermarket-unveil-dress-code.html#axzz2K88a7eqC I spotted a male shopper in his pyjamas at Sainsburys on DKH over the weekend!
  21. The ceilidh band we had at our wedding are based in Gloucestershire but advertise on their website that they are happy to travel to London and indeed they are in London quite a bit. They were called the George Buchanan ceilidh band. I've also heard Licence to Ceilidh play at various Burns Night suppers and they were fab (and based in London) although they might be quite expensive - worth a try nevertheless. Good luck with your hunt - if you're still stuck, it might be worth emailing one of the regular ceilidh venues in London and asking for some recommendations. S
  22. Hi Eleanor See link attached from Southwark Council's website dated December 2012. It sounds as though they will collect your tree if you leave it out with your brown bin (assuming you have one). They also list a number of collection points within the Borough. http://www.southwark.gov.uk/news/article/1091/recycling_around_the_christmas_tree However, I agree with Huguenot that this may not be the most environmentally friendly option. Good luck. S
  23. This driver was on our train home to E.D. this evening. His commentary was utterly priceless - made my night!
  24. I'm fairly sure I spotted some Washi tape near the tills when I was in Mrs Robinson on Lordship Lane last weekend. Failing that, I would try one of the shops on Northcross Road (e.g. E.D. or the beautiful card shop a couple of doors down) Good luck.
  25. Ah - that makes sense. It definitely looked too glossy to be a stray. Thanks Oakie95.
