Looking to hire a big child friendly house for ~20+
Oxalis replied to lockers's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I've stayed at Treowen near Monmouth several times with a group of 30+ (8 families with kids from 3-12yo). Symmonds yat is lovely and very close. I think they can provide caterers although haven't used them. It isn't fancy and there is plenty of outside space http://www.treowen.co.uk/ -
My daughter enjoyed it there last summer and is going back again this year. They go out on lots of local trips and she enjoyed the activities at the centre.

Has the Mirena coil given you side effects?
Oxalis replied to hellosailor's topic in The Family Room Discussion
There another coil now called "jaydess". It releases about 2/3 the dose of progesterone compared to the mirena coil and lasts for three years. http://patient.info/doctor/intrauterine-system-pro -
how do you carry your stuff when you are out exercising?
Oxalis replied to Convex's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Arm strap holder for phone and key. inhaler in back pocket/waistband/bra or take a couple puffs before i go and leave it behind (my asthma is very predictable though). Like Liz I haven't found a belt that worked for me. -
Had my first BB with the lovely Carly last week. I would definitely recommend her. I am delighted with the result and have had loads of complements about my hair. Wish I'd had it done ages ago. My usually messy hair now looks like it has been professionally blow dried with minimal effort on my part.

How would you deal with this behaviour in 6 year old?
Oxalis replied to Ole's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Something that helped my daughter was to ask her to choose something she'd like to do/treat (bribe!)when she got back home before she went on the play date. Then I'd remind her of this at 10 min etc warning. Made leaving a bit easier and more successful than removing activities. -

Thank-you, that is all really helpful.

I am dusting off my cello after 20 years or so of not playing. Any recommendations for the following? Someone to have a look at the sound post which I think has slipped a bit. A local teacher - I was grade 8 standard and would like to get back there and work on my technique. A localish orchestra Thanks in advance.

Steve and Nicola have just finished my through lounge and hall which look amazing. They were very professional and left the areas clean and tidy at the end of the day. There was very little dust at all. Steve's email: steve.loftus.1962@hotmail.co.uk

Another recommendation for Steve. He came promptly and sorted out the problem with my washing machine.

Another recommendation for Brad and his team. They did a fantastic job and were very professional. Three friends have already asked for his contact details! -
I am not religious but would like my daughter to have an understanding of faith and different religious beliefs. I would like her to realise that Easter is not just about the Easter bunny and chocolate. I took her to a Christigle service at Christmas and we talked a bit about how diffent people believe different things about Christmas. She is 4yo and has not experienced someone she knows dying although she asks about it a lot. For the moment I was sticking to Christian beliefs although some of my close friends are Jewish so she does know children who celebrate this time of year in a different way. So, how have you explained Easter to a child this age?

Toddler night terrors -any experiences?
Oxalis replied to BeadyBoo's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My daughter has night terrors when she is very overtired or has a temperature. She screams/walks/responds and behaves as if she is having the worst tantrum ever but her cry has a higher pitch than usual. She is now four and sometimes does have some recollection of them, as you would recall a bad dream. They happen about three hours after she goes to sleep and sometimes recur at 90 min intervals (thankfully not very often). If I turn the light on in her room as soon as I hear her scream that sometimes stops them and she just turns over and goes back to sleeping peacefully. Otherwise, I just stay with her and make sure she is safe. Talking to her just makes things worse so I now keep quiet. After 15-20 mins she will suddenly sit on my lap/lie down and go back to sleeping peacefully. She is a happy and healthy girl but several of her immediate family have parasomnias too which I think is quite common. -
I'd go for Wanstead rather than Stratford. Nice high St, green space and I don't think it had the massive price rises that happened in Stratford pre- Olypics. So it may give you a better return although I doubt your budget would be enough for 2 beds (similarly in Stratford). Having said that I think you would get much more for your money in South London. I moved from the east end about five years ago. The sale of my ex council flat funded the move, there is no way I could have afforded an equivalent house (or indeed any house) in the area I left but I could afford one in ED. Similarly for several friends. Have you considered moving further south - Catford/Penge/Sydenham?

I am so sorry to hear that. I bought "Mum and Dad glue" to read with my little girl but afraid I can't recommend a specific advice book. The Gingerbread website was helfpul for more practical things http://www.gingerbread.org.uk and also http://www.familylives.org.uk/advice/divorce-and-separation/your-children/what-to-tell-the-children-about-your-divorce-or-separation/ Look after yourself too.

Primark in Peckham has quite a lot of "Frozen" clothes. I bought a cotton turquoise/white dress with Elsa on the front there a couple of weeks ago for ?6. There are various other tops/leggings/bag too. Not as glamorous as the costume but my almost 4y was utterly delighted with it!

Birthday trip with 8 year old boy - recommendations?
Oxalis replied to enjoy's topic in The Family Room Discussion
If you don't mind a drive of about an hour Hobbledown is great but fairly pricey. Caters for a range of ages too. http://www.hobbledown.com -
This gives information for overseas visitors to UK needing medical treatment http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/AboutNHSservices/uk-visitors/Pages/accessing-nhs-services.aspx Your Mum should be able to register as a temporary patient at your GP surgery - seeing the GP is free but prescription charges apply. Emergency treatment in A&E is free too. Non- urgent specialist care will incur a charge - insurance company should cover this but check with them.

That's odd - MMR is definitely part of the pre-school booster. http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/vaccinations/Pages/vaccination-schedule-age-checklist.aspx

The "green book" on immunisations is probably the best place to look - produced by the Centre of Disease Control. This link below should take you to a PDF of chapter 21 of the green book which covers measles/MMR vaccination. The second paragraph on the 9th page states "if the child is given the second dose less than three months after the first dose and at less than 18 months old, then the routine pre-school dose (3rd dose) should be given to ensure full protection" https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/147968/Green-Book-Chapter-21-v2_0.pdf I think as a result of the poor uptake of the MMR a few years ago, particularly in South East London, Southwark started giving three doses of MMR routinely to pre-school age children.

Booster seat for mealtimes for a 3 year old?
Oxalis replied to SebsC's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My 3yo uses a Minene booster cushion http://www.amazon.co.uk/Minene-Booster-Cushion-White-Dots/dp/B007CVXV42/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1400603402&sr=8-8&keywords=booster+cushion It is basically a firm foam cushion. It straps onto the chair so it is fairly secure. I don't take it out but it would fit in a back pack/under a buggy. I thought it would get dirty but it has been fine, just sponged off any spills. The cover can be washed if necessary.
