suggestions for baby breakfast food?
missd replied to tinkerbell's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Got worried when saw you said mini weetabix are sweetnjc97 and just had a look - turns out they're oatbix! phew. ps -we have the ones with cranberry in at the moment. good call sophiechristophy - toast with avocado would be a great idea. will do that tomorrow -
They are a bit surreal but the babies seem to love them. There are lots of things going on in each class and she is true to her word in that activities are not repeated (i went for around 4/5 months and aside from a couple of songs in the main bit and the starting and ending songs, each activity was different. I couldn't run those classes - I dont know how she has the energy to do them but that's what we pay her for I guess!!

I got my son a pair of the mocci's http://www.moccis.co.uk/ They sell them in oliver bonas. They're brilliant for wandering around on wood and outside but still allow them to use their little toes to grip the floor with -
car hire with child seats, advice please
missd replied to 180176's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We have always taken our own car seat. Just put it in a black bin bag, label it up and check it in. It might get thrown about a bit but no more than any suitcase. They are very sturdy so has always been fine. ALso means you're not paying extra for something you already have and you know you're guaranteed one in the car you're renting -
Finger foods and gagging/choking - advice & reassurance please!
missd replied to jenc's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We did a mix of both - think I would do it that way again as I was reassured that my son was eating (because of the spoon fed meals) and then some part of the meal would be/is finger food -so cut a banana in half, peel down and cut off the skin around the banana so you're left with a handle of banana skin at the bottom and the banana poking out at the top if you see what i mean. Makes it much easier for the baby to hold the banana him/herself and eat it. Quite large chunks of food are best ie toast, buttered and cut into three lengthways. I would then give one of those pieces to him and he would suck on the bread mainly but progressed to biting bits off. So lunch would tend to be spoon fed and tea a mix of stuff -roasted veg is great -but keep them quite large, they should be like a handle that the baby can hold. pitta and hummus, avocado is great too As they get a bit older blueberries are great -i squish them a bit so that they are not swallowing a whole round blueberry (likely to gag on that!). Raspberries again - all these are good for developing their pincer grip too -
Thanks for the clarification everyone - that's exactly the information that I needed - I didn't really know what an au pair does exactly. It's just that we've been offered one through my husband's work (he's been offered a job overseas and will go on ahead to work and sort stuff out. I will remain here with our children for the first few months. Then we'll all go over together). His new office have offered us the au pair and I needed to be able to tell them how much one would cost). Thanks all

Christening present ideas for a 5 year old boy - advice needed
missd replied to budur's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We gave our godson an atlas -the times atlas. i thought it was a lovely idea as it's a picture of the world when he was little. it'll be something he keeps and will use forever. -
I thought he said 'how many of you(s) are robbers?' So maybe he started the whole thing (although we don't know what happened before that). The young guy shouldn't have spat on him though - that is pretty disgusting - but think old Bob Bailey might have deserved it too!

Brilliant thank you very much

Does anyone know how much an au pair costs please? Roughly. Is it an hourly rate? Daily? I guess it depends on whether or not they are live in. I would be interested in both rates (live in and one that just turns up at say 8am and leaves at 6) please if anyone knows? Thanks

Buggies backcarriers and planes...advice please
missd replied to KBN's topic in The Family Room Discussion
You are normally allowed to walk with the buggy all the way to th doors of the plane where you leave it and someone puts it on the plane for you. make sure when you are checking in you let them know as they normally give you a tag for the buggy. -

7 month old baby water v. milk question
missd replied to Lochie's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Yes you are meant to be giving them some water. Not too much but he will take as much as he needs. Think the idea is to give him most of his meal first and then offer him some water. Milk is obviously first and foremost but water with meals is also important. -
I found it really helpful to mix up the temperature at which I gave my baby bottles. It made life a lot easier down the line when we were out and room temperature was the only/easiest temperature at which I could give him milk (ie straight from the carton). Sometimes, straight out of the fridge as one day you might have to? It means that they are not fussy about what temperature the milk has to be. Would highly recommend.

Ha ha! Love the thought of her reading this and taking our advice on her acting skills! I had this same woman knock on my door last week and I almost believed her. However, something didn't seem right - she only had her phone on her, no house keys and where was the child that needed feeding? I wouldn't have left my child at home. If anything, I would have brought him/her along to back up my story. My son started crying and I used him as an excuse and just apologised saying I had to go.

Can you recommend a baby sitter for this Fri night?
missd replied to bee74's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi, we use an agency called sitters. ?12-75 a quarter and then you pay the babysitter directly about ?5-75 or so an hour. Really good and we were given their name as a recommendation from another friend. They are also nationwide so if you're somewhere else, you can find a local babysitter through them. Would highly recommend. They are all either mum/grandparent age or younger and studying to be midwifes, nurses etc. www.sitters.co.uk -
advice from parents whose babies sleep well......
missd replied to paps's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Our little one has always slept well - from about 2 months old has been sleeping through (at first with a dream feed at 11pm) which we dropped at about 5 months. The single most important thing I'd say is always put them to sleep while they are awake, so they learn how to fall asleep. So snoozy yes ,after a nice bath and bottle, book etc. But awake. Don't feed them to sleep otherwise they wake up in the night and think they need to feed again to fall asleep. It worked really well for us -
Public transport to Heathrow with a baby
missd replied to Keef's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I am doing the same thing - going with a baby to Heathrow. Camberwell Cars quoted me ?40 for a regular saloon car which I didnt think was too bad. Nappy Lady, yes I've flown with easyJet and we were able to take a buggy, travel cot and car seat for free. It was great. Sent the car seat through(wrapped it in a big black sack) and it was fine. Used them three times last year and happy with them each time
