Would TJMP like to comment? I have only just realised that she contributes to EDF. I agree with moos that his conviction should not result in her damnation but dulwichmum please don?t say your husband could slyly pay off ?500k of your mortgage without you knowing. True husband don?t tell there wives everything. Usually it would cover areas such as amount spent on booze, coming home late from the pub because of delayed trains and strip clubs at stag parties but half a million quid! Please?

Richer Sounds shop on Lordship Lane
JamesG replied to foxyarchie's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Isn't there a HIFI shop on LL already? Near ED Deli? -
SimonM Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The trouble with relying merely on the "security" > argument, rather than citing the bad > manners/looking a pillock argument too, is that > only by including the latter can you deal with the > twonks wearing baseball caps back to front....:)) Mr Simon what are "twonks"? And who are you to say (from a cool point of view) what people should or shouldn?t wear. I agree with Mr Huguenot about the importance of people taking responsibility. The bar does have the right to ban hoods for security reasons. Mr Simon I think baseball caps/hoods etc look silly too but you do not have the right to ?deal? with it. Whay do you care so much? Are you really cool? If so post a picture and we can all vote. Mr Hillside why was your pal wearing a hood up? Are you in your twenties? Do you genuinely like hiphop? Also I think you should post a picture. You and your pal may actually look like utter knobs and its better to hear it now from EDF friends than from your kids when they are older. Also ?two fairly respectable looking Dads? were your children with you? If not why mention that you were dads. Did you tell the barman? Did he care? Mr seanmlow you are correct it is awful!

Mr Piers we drew with Soton! Re Bentley, when her turned up at Norwich on loan from Arsenal as a clearly talented but still very inexperienced player he brought an ??$%ing entourage! What a !?^?%!

Our last game of the season in Charlton away!! Could be a sad day.

I am a suffering canary (lots of joke opportunities I?m sure for all you clever and witty EDFers). Midweek home disaster against Southampton this week. Last train back to London not direct! Didn?t get home until 1.00AM. Could be playing 1st division next year!!

"On the ball city" the oldest song in football. "Kick it off, throw it in, have a little scrimmage, Keep it low, a splendid rush, bravo, win or die; On the ball, City, never mind the danger, Steady on, now?s your chance, Hurrah! We?ve scored a goal."

Agree with it all.

?Thriftifarian? I like the original question? Are people going to ?downgrade? from Tandoori Nights to save 25p on a popadom? I don?t agree with WR V Sparkes as an example. A free range chicken is about ?4 cheaper (25%) in Sparkes than William Rose. I also think there is loads on nonsense be written regarding class. Of course its not an irrelevant concept. It has changed drastically especially since Thatcher. It?s harder to define now. There is probably more movement from one to another now. Infact there are probably more ?classes? now, the so called ?under class?. I appreciate that many of these words appear ugly but to suggest that the concept is irrelevant is ignoring the inequalities in live and not "perpetuating" them. I know I?m middle class and I know my parents and parents in law grew up working class, (no shoes, leaving school very young, physical manual jobs etc). East Dulwich is becoming ever more middle class hence a butcher that sells ?17 chickens and has a queue half way down the road.

Not been to Omrith or Ganapatti but will now so thanks for the tips. Bombay BC was my favourite for delivery but a couple of weeks ago a 45 minute delivery came after 1 1/2 hours and was cold. Very annoying as they had been really good. Tandoori Nights is good but the rest of LL is either poor or average at best from my point of view. Just typical curry aimed at pissed British people which is fine just rarely my thing now. My recommendations beyond ED/LL/SE22 etc are Caf? Naz, Brick Lane (better than anything in ED area) and Indian Ocean, Holloway Road (considerably better!).

The Van Man is The Man. Last weekend had a great roast beef ("H bone" never heard of before) from him for ?10. Best ever cold cuts the next day we've ever had from beef (bold statement I know). Yesterday had an enormous goose which was brilliant. Not cheap but my fault for ordering it without asking the price first (silly I know). Also ordered a big shoulder of mutton (generally much better than lamb I think) for ?8. He?s much friendlier than WR, more willing to talk about exactly what he?s selling and much better value for money from my esperience.

Serious or funny threads you wished you had the courage to start up
JamesG replied to microbite's topic in The Lounge
None that I wish I started but whoever started ?there are too many trees in ED? deserves to win a prize form comedy. This was the thread that got me going so to speak. Unfortunately I don?t think he was trying to amuse. -
Profiteering is the making of excessive profits. Whatever next? People go elsewhere!
-
Tried the van man on NCS and his beef was great (in fact the best ?next day cold cuts? I recall having) and very good value. Thank you for the advice, he is now my preferred butcher and WR is unlikely to see my money again.

At Christmas I bought a mulled wine spice packet from Franklins Farm Shop for ?1.49. I then found exactly the same product in the wonderful SMBS for ?0.99. I will be weary using Franklins in the future despite my general enthusiasm for the concept of a sort farm shop. I don?t mind paying for unusual hard to buy products but the mulled wine situation was profiteering.

"I know the guys there pretty well but I am sure some people consider them rude, but surely thats part and parcel of the genuine butcher experience, right?" what?
-
OK a few missed points in this thread. I was commenting on my experiences and asked for your experiences. I wanted to find out about other butchers in the area. I want value, quality and service. I questioned value (pseudo free range chicken ?14, real free range ?17 and the NCR van man much nearer ?10), I concede the quality is usually good but my most recent experience of service was piss poor. I don?t think I talked about ?lining pockets? but I will be trying other butchers having been treated badly by WR. I suppose this means I won?t be ?lining his pockets?. I am sad that this local business person will loose out but another will benefit. If more like minded people agree then more people will chose alternatives. I hope they avoid supermarkets but if local butchers don?t deliver quality, value and service (I assume these are the general wants of consumers) then so be it. This is basic economics, so if it upsets your utopian local community ideals get over it!! I?m not going to support local business blindly regardless of whether they?re any good. Comments about British people hating success are misplaced; a more relevant British trait to this thread is our frequent inability to complain!
-
A very good point. Also ?17 is silly business for a chicken! I want to support local privately owned businesses but a free range chicken from Sainsbury?s is ?6.00 (just checked online). I?ll pay a premium for not using a supermarket for good produce but not 183%.
-
I'm sure you?re not suggesting that because I?m dissatisfied with my encounters that I am not a ?big boy? and therefore immature. I too have ?waited years? for a butcher. I can only comment on my experiences. Generally they are fine but not always and today when I called to ask for a goose and asked how many people it would serve he said ?look its half price do you want it or what!?
-
Rude (especially the young lad), long queues, expensive, not always great produce. My 3 bird roast at Xmas was ok and not cheap. I wish it felt like I was going into a local community butcher not just another retailer taking advantage of middle class post code migrants (like me). I know that?s naive. He behaves and charges like he has no competition!
