Norway.. a sparsely populated country with vast natural resources, and an investment portfolio bigger than many countries national debts. But yeah, borrow a few hundred billion to renationalise everything, introduce an 80K tax band, and we'll be just like them!

Because it only has three screens, and wants to keep the programme reasonably diverse? Not sure this constitutes grounds for boycott.

Not everyone enjoys mowing the lawn and gardening. Personally I don't mind mowing the lawn, but it always has lumps and bare patches. It's not always easy to find the time to aerate and put down top soil and seed. I can see why some people would rather not have the hassle.

Well yes.. of course they're "nice" ideas! But they might as well promise a Hyperloop tunnel to New York. Or replacing polluting cars with unicorn-pulled carriages. They're never going to have to worry about actually implementing or funding any of it.

JRK, have you tried Mamma Dough? Branches in Honor Oak and Peckham. It's not bad.

Yes it was a petrol station, and as seenbeen says, there are underground fuel tanks which will need to be removed (if they haven't already). After the petrol station closed, it was just part of the Audi dealership.

I think Corbyn has always seen the EU as a vehicle for capitalism, and is a lot more opposed to it than he necessarily lets on. He's probably toeing the party line to a certain extent, e.g. on staying in the single market.

FFS, it's one pizza place replacing another, it's not as if the area is gaining a new pizza restaurant. "Can we have something different for those of us who do not eat pizza"?? Seriously? As if there is nothing else to choose from apart from pizza?

I thought you liked pizza?

It was part of the old Audi garage. Yes, a mixture of flats and houses. Surprised this isn't well underway already, TBH.

Diesel and petrol emissions are different. As Nigello says, diesel is more efficient, so produces less carbon emissions, but they produce other nasty staff .. NO2, and smoke particles. As for performance, diesel engines tend to have more torque, so you can accelerate or climb hills more easily without having to rev the engine as much. Even if they look slower on paper (0-60 speed, etc). I think a hybrid is the way to go. In theory you should get the torque and fuel efficiency of the diesel, with lower emissions than either. If you're lucky enough to have off-street parking, a plug-in hybrid would seem like a no-brainer.

Good properties on good roads are still selling. Less desirable properties (e.g. quirky layouts, or needing work, or on busy roads, or no outside space) seem to be sticking around forever.

Art Deco architecture in East Dulwich
Jeremy replied to edhistory's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I never understand what people mean when they complain new-builds aren't "in-keeping" with the area. Are we talking about architectural style? Surely nobody is advocating mock-Victorian buildings. Or are we talking more about the height of the building? As it goes, I think the new flats look quite smart - as does the leisure centre next door. -
JohnL Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > And May has now paid tribute to the memory of the > great Ed Milliband whilst eating a chip Lol... still, not as glorious as Peter Mandelson going into a chippy, pointing at the mushy peas, and saying "can I have some of that guacamole"? Even if it's not true, I still love the story.

I personally have no problem poising mice and other vermin. The traps baited with peanut butter, etc. were useless. Unsure about the sonic repellent plugs, they certainly don't completely keep them away. Glue traps work very well but are rather gruesome... strictly a last resort. Try to take the opportunity of sealing all gaps around the floor/skirting while your renovations are being done. In the meantime, keeping all your food in airtight containers and cleaning up all crumbs thoroughly will help a lot.

Witnesses please? - murder-investigation-launched-in-peckham-238727
Jeremy replied to nunhead_man's topic in The Lounge
Surely the Police asking for as many witnesses as possible is standard procedure. It doesn't mean that nobody has come forward yet. -

We shouldn't be asking our politicians what constitutes a "sin". It's a religious concept, which should be considered outmoded and defunct in the context of government. The correct question would be "do you believe homosexuality is morally wrong". I struggle with the compatibility of Evangelical Christianity and liberalism. But if Farron insists that he can keep his beliefs out of politics, then perhaps we should at least give him the chance to do so.

JohnL Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Society is changing and I cam coming around to a > universal salary at some point or other. > > People should really do what they enjoy doing (and > that's the advice I always give young people) Surely that's a flawed concept though - no person in their right mind would actually enjoy most of the jobs that are available/necessary. It's only a privileged few who are able to follow their passion for a living (even if that means sacrificing wealth in order to do so, they've still had the luxury to make that choice). Not that I'm suggesting this is necessarily applicable to the Picturehouse debate, mind you.

Surely fully electric is a non-starter unless you have off-street parking?
