Commuterama - commute times from East Dulwich
SeanMacGabhann replied to SeanMacGabhann's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Georgia I start at top of LL by the library so by the time I got to Denmark Hill, changed (hate changing!) and waited for the 42 it is still slightly better (depending on wait between 10-20 mins better) but fact is I love my walk from Elephant (need some excercise and I don't do gyms) That said I'm less picky by the time I leave the office - if a 78 or 42 just HAPPENS by as I'm walking well I'm only human.. -

buggie - Sounds like your other half works near as dammit next to me These days I 40 to Elephant and then walk from there through Bermondsey onto Tower Bridge Road and then over the bridge Although there is a bus that goes from Peckham Rye to Tower Bridge as well - 78 I think -

James Pretty much the same journey (metaphorically not physically) as me - once you start to think laterally and suss out the bus routes it can be fairly painless But changing at Bank???? The horror the horror. One of the biggest lies perpetuated by TfL is that Bank and Monument are the same station. Changing from Northern to District is ok - but Northern to Central?? on a hot summers day?? It can take half an hours walk -
Piers Is that Donna Tartt book worth persevering with ? It just became one of those books I lugged around for a month but never enjoyed reading so a 30 min bus ride would go by and I would have read 2 paragraphs

For me it's all about the "change" - i think I would rather sit on the 176 for an hour than to change modes What I used to do was walk to ED station (from top of LL) train it to London Bridge and then Bus to Moorgate - before I figured out that a) the trains were p-poor b) London Bridge to Moorgate wasn't all that far either and the 40 bus got me from my door to there anyway... -
In the 6 years I've lived here my journey to and from work has hovered around the 50-70 mins mark. (It's actually a bit higher now because I walk from Elephant to Katherine's Dock - but If I stayed on the bus it would be about 60). All told I don't consider it that bad at all - time to get a bit of reading in as well as excercise and music But I got to thinking how bad it would be if I had to change, get a tube, then another mainline to Herts or somewhere So who on here has the worst commute from ED?

Whilst on the pizza thread... We tried Mon PetiChou last night for the first time and based on my impression from the outside and from opinions on here it was almost exactly as I imagined - ie mostly A Good Thing Pizza was sublime, pasta was excellent and the staff were sweet as anything. Different food entirely from daytime opening and the (bottled) beer went down a treat. Only thing wrong is the decor which isn't wrong really - just a bit cafe ish which I imagine is what puts off most people peering in - we were the only 2 people for about half the time we were there Observant readers will note that I also said we were in Hoopers bar for first time as well last night - oh how the evenings fly by Re: Firezza. I wouldn't say it was all downhill from the first time - but I would echo Polly's general opinion that it can be cold and the toppings can be inconsistent. And I ALWAYS forget to ask them to slice it so I end up with half a metre of pizza to hack around in our tiny kitchen. If you fancy the same grub but warmer, the pub on the edge of Peckham Rye (Page 2 I think it's called?) on the Nunhead road serves fresj Firezza pizzas so worth a look - very close to the Gowlett tho so if you are already out and about.....

New Bar - Hoopers - Ivanhoe Road
SeanMacGabhann replied to David Mc's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I popped along last night with S - had a chat with the owner Jamie who told me of his plans to do up the outside garden bit and introduce food - sounds like a possible future meetup venue It is very much early days tho - all of the Ivanhoe regulars seem to be checking it out and unsure about the changes to their regular so fingers crossed. Barman was very pleasant too. -

Good to hear you rejoing the fray Mixulee (interesting name btw) Good luck to everyone with the petition but as PaulS pointed out, in a couple of years time, with the amount of residents in the area increasing exponentially, how will that square with EVERY resident's right to park in their street - I think Mixulee makes some reasonable points - in all my lifetime up until recently any of us with a car could expect to park close to where we live - the reason we now can't is there is more of us driving. And no driver likes to give ground...so if CPZ is introduced it might benefit the existing residents but that's all.... -

James - good to hear the money side is sorted but I know what you mean by violation My partner fell victim to the double-person scam at a cash point and immediately rang her bank to find $500 already gone -once again the bank handled it well but the paranoia lingers -
Ben - splendid selections That Mark Ronson cover of Stop Me is ok as far as it goes but it totally misses the point of the line And the pain was enough to make A shy, bald, buddhist reflect And plan a mass murder

Top 10 is it, I'll give you top 10 "I've searched the holy books I tried to unravel the mystery of Jesus Christ, the saviour I've read the poets and the analysts Searched through the books on human behaviour I travelled this world around For an answer that refused to be found I don't know why and I don't know how But she's nobody's baby now" Nick Cave - the who song deserves to be here but for a flavour the rest I shall keep as snippets "I'm not a mortal or a stone age man just a mortal with potential of a superman" David Bowie - Quicksand "And in a darkened underpass I though 'Oh God, my chance has come at last' But then a strange fear gripped me And I just couldn't dare" The Smiths - There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out "Steve McQueen jumped the first one clean But The Great Escape He tried to make was not to be... Maybe next time Steve" Divine Comedy - Absent Friends "These shades say something I bet they cost a lot I hope I don't break em I hope we don't break up" Iggy Pop - Shades "I love you you pay my rent" Pet Shop Boys - Rent "I'm hanging on your words Living on your breath" Depeche Mode - In Your Room "Now I've not much to give But a worn out excuse And these fine sober demons They sport fast and loose I have stories to tell which you'd rather not hear coz their told in the slang of some mean hungry years long before I was born but that's still all I've learned with the misadressed anger and stony contempt of my teachers now feeble and some are no more while im tongue-tied and shapeless on this mercantile shore" Cathal Coughlan - Dark Parlour "Ride On See You I could never go with you no matter how I wanted to" Christy Moor - Ride On "Too many protest singers Not enough protest songs" Edwyn Collins - A Girl Like You

Good spot James - I like those also. Haven't been in one to see how practical they are tho - I imagine they get hot in the Summer... and are they SE22 or SE21?

The 2 houses of which our flat is part of are the original 2 in our road ( I understand) and look significantly different from all the others - I quite like them The wooded flats and features mentioned earlier (near Barcelona and Jenny Eclair's house) seem to be getting more widespread - I notice some on the junction of Northcross and .. not Crystal Palace road - the road 2 roads up which is parallel....

Those lines from Hallelujah get me everytime - the whole song in fact. And I love when Buckley's version swings into The Smiths "I know it's over" Leoneard Cohen's original is one of those which is much worse than other's version but my fave is John Cale's version on Fragments of a Rainy Season ok - another quote then: "yes I can love my fellow man but I'm damned if I'll love yours" Sisters of Mercy..

Jeremy busy day such as saturday when parking is a nightmare - walk to local shops (if poss) quiet day such as Sunday local shops closed but no strange cars parked out front of house either way no parking hassles The police station is arguably the onle building in britain that would be improved aesthetically by becoming a car park but if said car park held, say... 500 cars.. upon which roads would that many extra vehicles drive? -

Cptn Birdseye Ooh I had a big reply all typed out but I've deleted it because I'm not trying to upset people. And I'm only trying to address the frustration felt by anyone in Mixulee's position not tell them what to do I would say that a family of 4 can buy things, more regularly, and for overall cheaper and not drive. For the most part. Those things that can't be got, are more expensive, less convenient, more desirable- well - for me - if I weigh it all up it's not worth the hassle of dealing with all of the traffic just for them. I'll find a way of getting them Anyone here I would wager could, if they wanted to, come up with at least 2 other ways of doing the same weekly shop with a similar budget So the question is why subject yourself to the frustrations of the road and parking issues? For other people it may be that it just can't be done any other way, or they don't want to do it any other way which is fine as far as it goes but people will only get more frustrated.. with the best will in the world, with the best council in the world and the best planning/CPZ in the world it's still all going to get worse if everyone adopts the only way to cater for a family is to drive anywhere The question surely is how do people think it's going to get solved by driving more - not a facetious question honestly. I'm genuinely curious as to how things will progress in 5, 10 , 15 years time -
blinder - how odd - Sweet Thing came on my shuffle yesterday on way to work and I was loving the lyric all over again And Appetite makes me Swoon every time - "if you take, then put back in....if you steal be Robin Hood"
