  1. Another problem with the corner of Friern road is that a number of lorries seem to be parking there just before the junction between Friern Road and Underhill Road leading to a number of near misses with cars as you have to walk out into the road to see if anything is coming...
  2. Hi James, Thanks for your response I think that on Borough High Street Southwarkcouncil standardised the entrances and also put the name of the shop in metal letters on the floor which was a nice but probably expensive touch to maintain! Certainly the pavements at the moment are a mess - uneven and also prone to large puddles when it rains. It must be a British contractor thing because when I lived in Switzerland they painstakingly removed the slabs, set them to one side and ensured they went back properly ? surely the council could enforce a similar rule before granting contractors a works permit to do the job? It really boils down to pure laziness on their part. I am not entirely sure what a 20Mph speedlimit will do to help Lordship lane business but maybe I am missing something. I am no way suggesting a gentrified road but surely there are things that the council can do to encourage business and make it more appealing, to for example make empty shops look better by putting artwork up over empty store fronts deters posters, the shop next to the butchers which I think has been turned into a flat is a prime candidate?
  3. Dear James, I was wondering what your views were in relation to the current trend of small independent shops going out of business with landlords greedily perusing the higher paying but generic chain stores? At present there seems to be an increasing number of empty shop fronts with no tenants in them as we all know this has a negative impact on businesses around them. Surely now is the time to take a proactive stance and open discussions with landlords and tenants alike to ensure that Lordship lane keeps a good mix of shops. It would be good to see the council investing in Lordship lane and attempting to maintain the appearance of Lordship Lane and surrounding streets by addressing simple issues like redoing the pavements which have patched up poorly over the years by various works, creating a uniform frontage for stores and the entrance outside stores etc?
  4. Sure this has been discussed before but just got a letter through the post about redevelopment of the cemetary. I live on Underhill road and look out to the trees round the perimeter of the cemetary so am a little bit worried by what the letter describes as "some vegetation clearance" to gain access to the site? I sincerely hope they are not using the same supposed tree surgeons who butcher the trees locally Having also read the redevelopment plan somehow they have justified the removal of old trees by saying they are too old and overgrown?? I am not sure what they expect, it is a natural, old and beautiful bit of woodland in their mind they expect a coppiced and orderly wood and seem prepared to remove trees to achieve this on the pretence of health a safety no doubt .... Can we have reassurances from the council that the view from Underhill road will remain woodland and won't be thinned or removed by over zealous people with chainsaws. Thanks
  5. A real shame, wish there was some form of rent control on highstreets, otherwise all that will happen is local traders will get priced out of the market and it will become a generic street or worse still an empty shop... I'm not stupid enough to ingore the market dynamics of simple supply vs.demand but really wish it wasn't like this.
  6. Fantastic to hear you're not closing have to admit was a bit upset by this "news", can't beat your monster dog and a bottle of the alcoholic fentimans ginger beer. Have you ever thought of making the back bit more informal with the high bar tables like in the middle section? In an ideal world wish you replaced Foxtons but thats another story...
  7. saw two kids wandering around that area at about 11 ish when on my way home, probably aged about 12 max. Struck me as odd that they were out that late... May or may not be related
  8. Seems some people on here clearly have very high standards and are used to the finest Italian ice cream... Went there this weekend and found the ice cream to be very good indeed. Price wise, it's a London ice cream shop selling good quality ice cream - I think some people forget that East Dulwich is hardly an out of town location...

And they've got rid of the quiz burger > special Wouldn't say 10 pounds for a cheeseburger and chips is expensive in fact for London that's pretty reasonable...
  10. One is in Dulwich though...
  11. Judging by a few empty shop fronts on LL I doubt it... More residential space the better = increased footfall for existing local shops.
  12. I was only going by what I have read in this thread, I can't find a link to them but if you have it I will read it first mate Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Calsug, > > Have you read the application and read the > objections?
  13. I don't understand why this was rejected? What could be worse than empty office space above Iceland and a store that is tired and dated? It seems to be a decision made by a vocal minority - give me real well thought out rational as to why it was rejected and you can sway me, but so far I have heard nothing that persuades me there is any reason to reject it ... One "reason" I heard was about the lorries, are M&S lorries any different than Iceland lorries? Another was that it would affect Lord ship Lane business, how does 8 extra flats with 16+ people adding spending power to LL impact negatively??
  14. thanks for the update James, sure they will look good in the end. Know that when other areas have had similar lighting schemes fitted it does improve the look and the feel of an area. 15. Quick question, what happened to the amazing new lights that were fitted to replace the first lot of failed floor lights outside the train station? The new ones don't seem to be working either...
  16. fredricketts - Anyone would think the intention was to put an open prison or a drug rehab centre on this site from the tone of your post! I doubt a block of flats with more than likely couples will add to the violence and "rot" if anything - more people means more money for the local area and businesses! I don't think that the new owners will be organising illegal drag races down lordship lane either... Sorry I rarely post on the "sensitive" to east Dulwich topics but if we are being honest here I think it boils down to one thing - the people who have been in east Dulwich for many years simply don't want an M&S as for them this is the removal of a cheap supermarket on their doorstep and i fully understand why people are irked by it and what it represents but suggesting all other reasons listed above I find hard to believe. For the record I don't care if another Iceland goes there, M&S food is overrated and over priced the only thing I would like is something that is less ugly and more aesthetically in keeping with the surrounding stores.
  17. Have to admit it does seem like East Dulwich is dirtier even in the last year since I moved here. Fly tipping is definitely more of a problem for sure and repeat problems like dumping of of household rubbish on the corner of Frien road which invariably gets torn apart by the foxes is a pain... One thing that does confuse me - in other boroughs the street cleaners have very efficient (and yes probably expensive) sweeping machines but the guys who do the streets here have to manage with a mangey old brush and a shovel - surely this is not the quickest or most efficient way to clean the streets?
  18. What distance are you looking to do? I go round one tree hill a few times but its pretty hilly and uneven so probably not ideal.
  19. Without trying to sound overly critical but what an epic waste of money that was then - knowing how things work, there was months if not years of planning, it was designed and fitted and then no one bothers to maintain it because it "wasn't handed over" Surely you can get it handed over and maintained instead of just having them lie dormant and useless? James Barber Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > The floor lighting you're talknig about was > isntalled about 8-10 years ago. It was never > handed over to the council lighting people and > didnt have a seperate maintenance plan. Floor > lights are especially prone to problems having to > take weight and harder ot keep dry.
  20. Since when did people rely on the timetable for buses?! You need to get a bus checker app or use the text number on the bus stop. As for the 176, it could be worse the P13 is only once ever 20 minutes...
  21. Sorry to hear that. Was that on Underhill road? Saw a BMW had paint on it the other day so guess it was yours . There does seem to be a lot of graffiti on underhill road at the moment mainly "Gear" tag - which as with all tags is ugly, disrespectful, upsetting and utterly pointless.
  22. Anyone else noticed there seems to be a lot of flytipping on Underhill road lately? Have reported two now to Southwark council so hopefully they will get cleared up soon....
