  1. Not so sure about trams James - Edinburgh was a good case study on trams not being quick or even cheap to deploy ... think laying down track and having trams competing on roads that already can?t cope with cyclists, cars and buses is a recipe for disaster. It would create more traffic and ultimately more pollution James Barber Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Hi Calsug, > > > Totally agree public transport improvements are > necessary. 2. There is nothing well intentioned about chuggers - they aren?t there to help the children either.... fine it?s a job and yes it?s a way charities make money but let?s just be honest about their intentions and motivations malumbu Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I had a knock on the door the other day and it was > a young child wanting me to sponsor him for a > school fundraising event. 3. Really? So the south circular that goes through Clapham along the Common is where all the poor people live!? Not to mention all the people who live in Fulham and Chelsea - because tons of poor people live there. Sorry James that?s total tosh Whilst I fully support the need to cut pollution in our capital I honestly believe that can only be achieved through better public transport infrastructure not by taxing people out of their cars - what happened to great concepts like cycle highways above train tracks for example? Why are there no boris bikes in East Dulwich? Why is the main form of connection in SE London an unreliable and expensive train service or an overcrowded bus? I personally only use my car to get out of London, I don?t drive it on a daily basis but instead put my commute in the grubby mitts of southern rail to give me a 4 carriage train during rush hour also I would quite happily walk a few miles to get somewhere instead of using a bus ... so actually I?m a bit annoyed that now I will be charged to get out of London on the odd weekend Totally agree about the wood smoke though - Certainly from my runs I know a few areas where houses definitely are burning something they shouldn?t be. 4. I prefer the carrot approach instead of the stick... 5. If the charge supported increased transport links in south London then I might support but I feel it won?t...
  6. I don?t mind people knocking on my door but when I politely say I?m not interested I don?t expect a reply other than ?thank you? and for them to walk away... malumbu Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > You all need to move to Gated Communities. 7. How does this work exactly? Is it linked to the the relevant council?
  8. Just had the displeasure of two people from the NSPCC calling at my door, when I politely said I wasn?t interested the closing comment from one of the was ? don?t you want to help some children?? At which point I got a bit firm and told him not to be like that and that he had no idea of what I do and don?t do for charity ... To be honest I couldn?t believe the cheek of the comment from a guy who has no idea of the personal backstory of the person he is talking to but also from a guy who is in it for commission As it is I do support a Charity for children - but that is my business and not for anyone to question or make assumptions of on my front door Anyway if they come round your way next - enjoy
  9. I think it?s great, don?t think the walk is overly long considering it is actually a very large station with a lot of platforms and lines going in multiple directions Personally pretty grateful for the refurb, was at gare du nord station recently and made me appreciate the massive amount of modernisation the London stations have had... I would happily take a longer and more spacious walk
  10. I can?t imagine the margins would cover that! But maybe charge an extra 5 quid and get collection afterwards? 11. Agreed its a total pain, I took our tree down last week in time for collection and it was gone the same day (from the front of my house not dumped on the street) Now there are loads of trees that won?t get collection till mid week littering the street - was tempted to start throwing a few back over walls as we dodged around them with the buggy yesterday...
  12. Thanks to everyone for PMs and replies The Dellows - think your post is spot on. We had a good talk to the nursery and so far the settling in seems to be going okay. Think we are going to give it till Christmas and then decide what to do
  13. Thanks for the comments so far, really appreciated We looked at a number of nurseries round us and to be honest at the time this one seemed like the best one which has further added to the frustration / upset. Carebeer as you suggested we are starting to think that maybe a nanny/nanny share could be good short term option until he is bigger and more able to "fend for himself"!!
  14. Our 6 month old is due to start nursery 3 days a week from next week and we had the first of his settling in days today and are a bit concerned about how it went... Firstly he is the youngest in the baby room with the other babies being 9-12 months He isn't weened at all yet and the staff were asking what to do with him at snack time and what he would normally eat?! During lunch time they said he would need to be in a high chair so the other babies can be fed but he can't fully support himself so how is this possible?! Although the nursery advertises taking babies from 3-4 months they said they hadn't had a 6 month old for quite some time A few other comments have left my wife and I totally in shock and a bit worried about sending him there despite us paying for the month coming. What should we do?! Talk to the manager and express our concerns is of course the first step but I am thinking to look for other options - the issue is my wife is due back at work next week! Thanks Calsug
  15. Agree with the above, we used to live near Lordship lane and moved to a house near the park, to be honest the extended walk into town isn't a problem plus its for us its quite nice to be in a slightly quieter area
  16. Thanks Sue, my heart sank when I saw it, I know it must have been someone?s much loved pet and I didn?t want to leave it in the middle of the road.
  17. Know this isn't particularly east Dulwich relevant but on the off chance thought I would post here anyway Unfortunately on my walk home I spotted a dead tabby cat on the road by brenchley gardens. I moved it to the pavement so it didn't get hit again and to check for a collar but it didn't have one. Sorry I couldn't do more but was all I could do at the time Calsug
  18. Your opinion or fact as well! Personally walking down lordship lane you see much more variety and independents - have you been down a "normal" high street recently which is full of multiple Pret A Manger's, costa, Starbucks etc The owner of My local corner shop told me he now has over 100 different craft beer and they "fly off the shelves" in his words. He went on to add that the neighbourhood has changed dramatically in the last 10 years but is now much safer to live in etc... now I don't like craft beers but clearly he has adapted and survived and is doing well from it gentrification is always seen with such hostility but please don't try to dress it up as the death of a neighbourhood it's just the changing of one.. plus why do you think Peckham has got expensive? it's because it used to be an afluent area and as a result has a lot of large sized Victorian housing stock... Angelina Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > > Gentrification tends to be a cleansing of an area > making it slightly sterile. This is Peckham ffs.
  19. I stopped using black cabs when a number of times they didn't want to go to Dulwich as it "was out of their way" black cabs have made uber so popular by being slow to adapt and overly expensive. Afraid the local knowledge upper edge is simply obsolete now there is GPS. As for The rationale that Uber drivers clog up londons streets, if londons public transport was better and cheaper than Uber then maybe more people would use it, plus London simply does not have the public transport capacity without Uber taking the strain off it
  20. The borderline comical actually was seeing a guy at Cafe G who had his keyboard and mouse along with him for his laptop and was properly setup! I get why people do it and I guess if Cafe's didn't want them then they wouldn't offer free wifi... does it p!ss me off when I can't find a seat in a cafe? Yes but thats not really their fault.
  21. Clearly I don't follow this forum enough to get the sarcasm posts!
  22. Looks fantastic, my wife was mentioning that the long grass on Peckham Rye should have something similar done What seeds did you use?
  23. Currently a very senior looking member of Southern doing a TV interview outside London Bridge station if you fancy heckling him - I was very tempted having just been at the ticket office to renew my season ticket...
  24. Another recommendation for Julian he did a fitted wardrobe in our spare room and the finished result was fantastic Always left the room tidy at the end of the day and very professional throughout
