Where to go after East Dulwich?
SilverSurfer65 replied to ednewmy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Why not go right out into Kent? We did almost 3 years ago, having lived in East Dulwich for 51 years, the last 43 in the same house in Silvester Road. Bought that in 1970 and sold in 2013, at a BIG profit. Now living only 40 miles from there, just off the M20 Motorway, in a village between Ashford & Maidstone. The local station goes direct to Victoria Station. Having a great time spending the Equity, and just come back from Cuba over Xmas/New Year, our 12th holiday since we moved here. Yes, I am one of those who still pops onto the E.D. Forum now and again to see what's going on, and love reading all the stuff on here. -
My hair colour and my memory sometimes.

Totally agree with you - I record it if I have to be out and watch later. TillieTrotter Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Has anyone else caught this. It's absolutely > heart warming and funny and tragic. The best > thing I've seen on TV in ages.

Have you also now heard that the Nurse at the Hospital who gave out the information has committed suicide? Who's going to be the first to make snide remarks about that?

Silvester Road will always be my favourite, followed by Oakhurst Grove. Known them both , woman and girl for 50 years.

Whats happened to the Grove/Harvester
SilverSurfer65 replied to spoiltdog's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
We went in for lunch earlier this year, before the latest fire, and they were no longer The Harvester but had reverted back to being The Grove. They didn't do the salad cart as the old Harvester did. The waitress who served us said lots of customers were not very happy that it had changed, when we said we wouldn't be going back. We loved the salad cart and I had to struggle to finish my mains too. That's the second fire I can remember in that place - the last one was in the 1990's. Gina -
What's happening with Dulwich Hospital?

Me too Steveo. My late brother was born there in 1946, and my youngest daughter in 1966. Her two children were both born there, in 1986 and 1989. I worked there as a Medical Secretary - twice - the first time from 1964 - 1966 then again from 1968 - 1970. While researching my Family History, I found that my Paternal Great Grandfather died there too. I have many reasons to be sentimental about Dulwich Hospital. -
I would be happy to give any of the smaller blue boxes a home, if there are still any going spare please. Gina

Apparently the Council are only sweeping once a month now. I had no luck with the e-mail address James gave me, so sent him an e-mail direct, and also reported a light out in our road. The light was fixed within 2 days and then the road was swept!!!

Hi computedshorty, Thank you so much for sharing your memories, and I do enjoy reading everything you write on here. One thing puzzles me though - why did you all not get evacuated? I went away aged 10 months to Rawtenstall in Lancashire, with my Mother and her elderly parents, after my Father went off to War. My Grandfather died there in 1943, and we came back to London, but were then sent away to Audenshaw in Manchester. I don't know how long we were in Manchester, but we did come back before the end of the War, as a bomb dropped a few streets away from where we were living, and a lump of shrapnel fell on the roof and windowsill of our house. My husband was also evacuated, and he was one of 6 children at the time. He was first sent to Surrey with his older brother, came back to London after a few months, but then went to Wales on his own in 1944, aged 8, and he had a terrible life there with the people who took him in. His parents stayed in London and there were 2 more children born, although the last one was born in Blackpool in 1944, so his Mother must have been evacuated there. I'm sure this has already been mentioned, but have you ever thought about publishing your memories? Thanks again. Gina

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
SilverSurfer65 replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi James, Are the street cleaners on strike? I live in Silvester Road, the Barry Road end, and it doesn't appear to have been swept lately. Should I ring somebody at the Council? Thanks. Gina
