  1. There was a suggestion of a 20 mph limit recently but it seems to have died a death.
  2. With the 'perfect mum' variety one has to invite other 'perfects' with them so they can out do each other. I found that the aunts I had like that were a pain to be around, but the ones who had doubts about themselves and their own performances were much nicer to be with. They are the type of people who when invited for supper I produce something which has to be eaten with the fingers, because it is difficult to maintain an uptight, stiff upper lip position when you have a greasy sticky sauce dripping from ones hands and chin. Some people are very good salesmen when talking about their lives and selling how wonderful it all is. The facts are real life aint like that, and the people who have to crow about it are usually shakey about themselves, but it takes all sorts to make a world.
  3. Ist of September and the temperature dropped to 4 degrees, at this rate when winter comes in full force, I shall have to hire an eskimo to clean the windows.
  4. The best thing that could happen to you katietatie is if you didn't care whether you sold it or not. When one is keen to sell it people keep well away. Dropping the price is not the answer at this stage of the game, being relaxed and patient is.
  5. It is as safe here as you can expect in a major city and better than most other areas in this city. There are stabbings and the odd murder although they are often drug related or domestic eg. husband and wife. Don't worry this is considered to be a safe area.
  6. The worst thing about living in the country is the provincial attitude of it's inhabitants. When there is a bit of a knees-up, all the old wounds are opened up from three generations ago and all the locals remember it, how the great grandfather was cheated out of the bottom field in 1892................. Nope I am a towny although I do not mind visiting the country, briefly sometimes.
  7. 21% oxygen too DJKQ I hope.
  8. 25th of September according to James Barber.
  9. Herne Hill has done so well to avoid chains. Independents too, it's a crappy shopping centre except for the basics.
  10. Fandango
  11. If as humans we refuse to address these failings Sean, there is little hope for humankind. Being human is the capability we have of contemplating this self induced behaviour. We are slightly more complicated than leamings, but we are going the same way....... . . . . and what makes us human is the fact that we know Sean, you mory oxon.

    Takeaways

I read somewhere that the founder of the burger king chain was such a brilliant salesman he could sell sh!t, so thats what he did.
  13. The way we arrogantly consume the world's resources due to over indulged lifestyle, and to our short sighted over-population. We as humans arrogantly ignore the future consequences because we dislike talking about death. Knowing that the end result is too dire for either us, or any of the political leaders we voted in for the last forty odd years. We might cause a run on the pound, the place might become a free for all, there could be riots in the street. You reading this cannot wait to click to another thread which is easier to live with and more fun.................. That is being a yellow bellied, cowardly human, just like me.
  14. I watched a fisherman at Surrey Quays pull out a golden carp weighing 26 pounds yesterday whilst roaming around between the Decathlon sheds. It costs ?20 a year to fish there but you cannot remove them, you have to put them back. Another fisherman had caught one at 38 pounds last year.
  15. I agree with you wee quinnie, this area is poor for vegetarians.
  16. I used the nicotine chewing gum, I would get a square of gum and cut it into four fingers then leave one in my mouth lying between the gum and teeth, when the craving grew I would give it a couple of chews and put it back, leaving it to do it's work. It took a few months to break the habit but I felt smug when I no longer needed the gum. It is my greatest personal achievement.
  17. My children thought the Nare Hotel in Cornwall the most enjoyable, it has both indoor and outdoor pool with a hot tub, and a wander down to the beach was a five minute walk away but a ten minute climb back. They thought the food was excellent as they catered seperately for them and there were other children around of various ages to mingle with. You could walk out of the hotel grounds through a gate straight onto farmland for cliff top walks without having to negotiate roads which was a plus. The time we were there it was scorching hot and we hardly saw the kids except for meal times as they would amuse themselves with their new found friends.
  18. Well put MM.
  19. One or two pupils moved from Jags to Alleyn's and my daughters said they enjoyed the more relaxed atmosphere of the place, but the main issue was bitchiness. At Alleyn's they could hang with the boys who always seemed delighted to have them around even if they were being given 'grief' by their feminine piers, where as at Jags there was nowhere else to go and consequently felt isolated and uncomfortable with the place. If your daughter is extremely bright then it is the place to try first, but if they do not fit for some reason then Alleyn's is a very pleasant second choice. Either choice is very expensive and I wondered when mine were at that stage if that money might be better invested in property for a more reliable return for their future. Now they have jobs I realise that having any private school on your CV gives added access to interviews. I remember some years ago killing time talking to a nun on a ferry and she said "if you are born a dunce you will die a dunce" I thought that a pertinent point. Whilst we all agonise over their education after you come through the other end having helped them through hours of home work, it seems in retrospect a lot of worrying about nothing. These league tables are such a lot of crap, what really matters is the quality of teaching available, and there is still only one or two teachers you come across in a lifetime who actually inspire their pupils.

    Sloe News Day

    Loz I have Pm'd you.
  23. When reading such letters I often wonder how much their chief executive will donate, not a lot would be the reply. I used to supply this hospital with British made equipment and then they started to buy from an American maufacturer for almost twice the price, for what many considered to be inferior equipment. No, I would not give a penny until they tighten up the wastage on what they spend on equipment, but more especially on the middle management administrators who seem to have proliferated in recent years but do not improve the service one bit. LadyM keep your money in your pocket I think like Mick Mack it is a bit cheeky, well actually I think it's a damned sauce.
  24. I felt freer somehow when I packed it up and also found any smokey environment made me feel sick. Ten years on I could still smoke one but my one advantage is I do not drink alcohol, which I think makes it easier.
  25. Any particular reasoning for that safesurfer? Everyone else seems to think the place would be improved without the lights.
