Court Lane Gardens - stupid driving
shoshntosh replied to HelBel65's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I walk down Court Lane almost every day (as I live on a street off it), and I see this happen almost every day. Not necessarily the Court Lane Gardens "shortcut" you describe (I mean, what a serious plonker) but someone overtaking at speed. I frequently shout at people to slow down ... (which I'm sure helps the situation). I wonder if the residents have thought about requesting a speed camera? -
Query: drug deals in Underhill Rd
shoshntosh replied to IlonaM's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Does it really help to report these?? (It's a genuine question -- not being snarky!) I have seen two in the decade I've lived in Dulwich and I didn't report either because it all happened quickly and they were gone! -
It would be great to find a local place that would show games. I am partial to the Patriots, but also love watching the Cowboys and the Browns (I know, an odd assortment). But my son loves watching ALL the teams play. I did at one point have the game pass but then I got a bit huffy that it didn't include the playoff games -- but I see now it's probably the way to go! Thanks everyone!

Men pretending to be gardeners/tree surgeons...

A second recommendation for Tim Doidge... he's the real deal. It's incredible how inventive thieves can be. -
Yes it's the same owner as the West Dulwich Polished, which I've frequented many times. Lovely place -- fab pedis and facials. Not cheap but so worth it, as it's clean, relaxing, and consistently good, with friendly, welcoming staff.

I had a man knock on my door last week, coincidentally in the ONE SINGLE hour each week when I normally not home and my children are here alone (they are teenagers) -- I happened to be working from home that day but it was very unusual. He was collecting for something -- didn't get far enough to find out what because I pointed out the "no solicitors" sign on our front door. He then became very abusive and threatening so I closed the door, at which point he shouted obscenities at me through the letter box -- he called me a "dumb bitch" etc. And he proceeded to lecture me through the door about the requirement for an OFFICIAL sign -- homemade signs according to him are not legit. (is this true??) Anyway, it was a bit scary and I immediately e-mailed my entire street to let them know. Some people confessed later to hiding when he rang their bell or knocked.

"Homeless American Veteran" Denmark Hill Station

"possibly mentally ill" -- no patronising assumptions made. -
"Homeless American Veteran" Denmark Hill Station
shoshntosh replied to EDmummy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I'm curious, why does his nationality matter? Why does it matter if he is or isn't a "actually" veteran? The point is, the guy is homeless, possibly mentally ill, and he's a human being who clearly needs help. Cash for a quick fix (food or otherwise) is almost never the solution... supporting and volunteering for homeless charities is, not to mention electing a government that understands the serious mental health crisis this country is facing. Having said that, stopping to talk to vulnerable homeless people -- if it is safe to do so -- can sometimes be a very humanising experience and offer the comfort of personal connection. I applaud the OP for taking an interest. WHYPETER, I don't see that anyone said "war hero" except YOU, so in future before criticising maybe pay a little bit better attention...? Perhaps you should ask yourself why it's important to you to convert others to your hardened, cynical world view? -
Wife attacked by dog on Peckham Park
shoshntosh replied to Teacher12's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
What an awful experience your wife had and how sad that there are a few irresponsible dog owners out there who spoil it for the rest of us. I hope she and your pup are healing alright and that this doesn't happen again. -
Hello, does anyone have experience disposing of old broken garden plant pots. These are very large and not easily transported, so I checked with Bulky Waste Collection but they are not on the list of acceptable items for collection. Any ideas?

Calton Ave/Dulwich Village junction
shoshntosh replied to Lucyalexandra's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
That looks very good indeed, rch. What is the current plan? -
There are good dog owners and not so good dog owners -- and yes, the bad ones spoil it for the good ones (just as in any circumstance). But for the life of me I cannot figure out what the fuss is about re: photographing someone's dog. Maybe it's polite to ask first, but seriously, they're DOGS. Aren't we going a bit overboard? Who cares? What am I missing here? the OP wrote "firing a DLSR" as if the dogs were being shot. FIRING??? it's not a water pistol, or even an air gun. It's a photo. Of a DOG. Some have suggested this is "breaking the law" -- world gone mad, that. (and yes, i'm a dog owner...)

Man arrested in connection with Dulwich Park stabbing
shoshntosh replied to gerry's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I have heard that the Dulwich Park stabbing was committed with a screwdriver, rather than a knife. Has anyone else heard this? In any case, the chosen weapon feels sort of beside the point, as there are plenty of options available other than knives. The issue is the crime itself, and the resulting violence. I am not familiar with the statistics, but I do wonder whether austerity leads to higher crime generally? -
how to commute to Canary Wharf
shoshntosh replied to scarlettbanks's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I did this commute from Herne Hill and I have to say, as evidenced above, there ARE rather a lot of options, which is great, however each option has its drawbacks. The question is this: what is most important to you on your commute? If it is cost, then obviously cycling is the way to go, or one of the routes that avoid Zone 1. I settled on the N. Dulwich to London Bridge to Canary Wharf route because I wanted one interchange, but also because I liked the 20 minute train journey into London Bridge each morning. I got a seat. I collected my thoughts for the day. I read a book and sometimes checked e-mails. But it was pricier, and also once you get to LB the chaos ensues. (Sometimes I took the boat from LB to CW -- so peaceful, but SO Pricey!!!) I'm not sure I'd choose the LB route now bc Southern rail is such a mess. Another friend of mine has been doing this for 20 years and for her overground to Canada Water was best. I found that journey horrible -- squashed, standing up. But then it is cheaper and more reliable. I never tried cycling bc I'm basically a wimp. I probably should have. In any case, try them all out and see what works best for you. Canary Wharf itself is fairly soul-less and without charm, however, there are lovely gems to be discovered there, it is hugely convenient for shopping, and it's clean. I can't say I don't sometimes miss it!!! Oh, and one more thing, at Canary Wharf and Canada Water there are queues to board the tube. Sometimes they can be rather long, but I was impressed by how orderly and efficient they were. (Having said that, people who didn't move down inside the carriage infuriated me regularly!!) Good luck! -

What Court Lane incident??? -
Hi I'm looking for a reasonably priced decent home projector to work with my MacBook Air, just for screening films etc. I am hoping to pay no more than ?150. Any thoughts? Not so into having the perfect PICTURE but really don't want a loud fan. Thanks
