  1. It's funny how the negative threads always last for much longer than any positive ones do! "Awful books" is still going strong whereas "Great Books" has died a death. Is it because people are generally more wary about stating what they like for fear of being shot down?
  2. Old git :))

Cheers guys. Next you'll be telling me > that Dido is no goddess. Over-rated doesn't mean bad. For instance, I cited Nirvana, although I really liked them when they first appeared and still enjoy their work (in small doses), but they are clearly not as good as their legacy suggests. Jimi Hendrix, he's another one, great guitarist, yes. Some good tunes, but for the most part pretty dull.
  4. Even the first two Oasis albums had a lot of excrement on them. You could probably condense the whole of their output into one fairly decent album.
  5. REM Nirvana
  6. I think doing books at school often ruins them. I came to Hardy of my own volition and really loved Tess, Jude the Obscure and Far from the Madding Crowd. Agree about Anil's Ghost, really dreary and a cast of totally unsympathetic characters. I seem to remember quite liking The English Patient though.

  8. Aaargh! The Ambassadors! I read that too, or rather my eyes read the words whilst my mind found far more interesting things to think about (Ferrero Rochers). Like ruffles I always make an effort to finish a book, whatever the quality. I wish I had made an exception with The Ambassadors.
  9. It's not. I read Enduring Love, hated it, gave him another chance with Saturday, hated it too. I won't be going back for more.
  10. Saturday by Ian McEwan - what a load of old sh*t. The lowest point was the 14 page description of a squash match.
  11. It's all about timing. Mrs B popped out to Bill Rose at about 7.15 this evening and returned 5 minutes later with the Christmas Goose.
  12. I read a Michael Chabon, courtesy of Asset at the Book Swap, and rather enjoyed it, does that make me a bad person? Worst book I finished was something by Wilbur Smith - utterly shite. Worst book I didn't finish was Ulysses by Joyce - utterly unreadable.
  13. The Bottom Inspectors, based on the ticket inspectors who roamed the Newcatle underground.
  14. I disagree Keef, he was funny on that too. Really sarcy to all the rubbish interviewees. I seem to remember him really upsetting the Kooks, you can't ask for more than that can you? I never used to watch NMTB when Lamarr presented it, but these days it is very funny (if you like puerile humour, which I do).
  15. Simon Amstell is a very funny man.
  16. The one before was great though don't you think? When COnnie sliced open dullards neck.
  17. That was the best series of spooks in years. I was tempted to give it the heave-ho after the Iranian yawn-fest throughout the last series. I can't help but think that, as usual, they'll resolve the cliff-hanger within the first 2 minutes of the next series.
  18. I Can't see them wrapping it up in 2 episodes. Are they angling for a second series?
  19. One of these mega-tunnels was dug next to my parents house in Summer '07. They suffered a large amount of cracks throughout the house and their cellar now has to have large amounts of water pumped out of it every week. They have been fighting with TW ever since to get them to admit liability. Yes, they're clearly not doing the work for the sake of it, but I would agree with tomdhu thath if the work is happening in your area then be sure you're aware of it, an action group doesn't sound like a bad idea at all.
  20. I recorded a few Clash programmes last week. Revolution Rock, a bit of a light-weight Clash documentary, but with loads of concert footage. Westway to the World, haven't watched that yet. Also Joe Strummer, The Future is unwritten, a really well made biopic of the man. Sounds like he was a bit of an arse in his Clash heyday, but in his latter years came across as a really down to earth decent guy, very humble and clearly widely loved by all those who met him. It's got me listening to lots of Clash again, really reminds me of what a top-draw band they were, some really fantastic tunes.
  21. Fatality at Honor Oak Park.
  22. I'm with david_carnell, that Phil Spector Christmas Album knocks spots off the competition and bears repeated playings. Fairytale of NY is great, but like most xmas tunes has been played to destruction, so I can't listen to it anymore.
  23. It was good actually. It took me a while to come to that conclusion though as it was impossible to empathise with any of the characters. Stuart being dull, Oliver was so completely odious (I almost cheered when he got head-butted), and Gillian actually falling for Oliver was incredulous. What's the sequel like?
  24. Getting through my Book Swap Books at the moment. Julian Barnes' Talking It Over, Evelyn Waugh's Gilbert Pinfold and just about to start last year's Booker winner The Gathering.
