Green Cross Code- Filmed in East Dulwich
Muttley replied to Selma's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip

"The biggest problem with 'communication' is the assumption that it has taken place" (given by a guy called Vincent Nolan)

I think you're right Macroban, it seems Marmite have made a sloppy inaccurate reference to Camberwell Green and lots of other sites have simply copied it verbatim. That's the web for you. Several independent references can be found to Marmite factory in Vauxhall. When did the Vauxhall factory close?
-
This isn't quite East Dulwich so maybe destined for the lounge, but according to Marmite's website, they opened the country's second marmite factory at Camberwell Green in 1907. Where was it? When did it close? Did they choose Camberwell because you either love it or hate it?

Green Cross Code- Filmed in East Dulwich
Muttley replied to Selma's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
What a vintage discovery Selma. On the subject of Youtube East Dulwich clips, here's a clip of The Great Storm of '03, filmed just up from the Magdala. Where were you when the hailstones hit? -
It no longer has a raisin d'etre.

My first thought was that this is the old electrical shop on Peckham Rye backing onto the Gardens with a view over the Rye,but that isn't set out as a restaurant so yes, must be The Green.

ALL I EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SEX BUT WAS AFRAID TO ASK (Isn't it 'Everything you ever wanted...'?). Anyway, mine fits. But I'll let Mightyroar set another one as I'm going to bed.

The Green - Goose Green - Closed Down.
Muttley replied to LibraCarr's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
According to Rumours in this month's SE22 mag, just through the door, "Italian Restaurant - definitely coming!". Anyone able to confirm that this is referring to the restaurant that will be replacing The Green? -
East Dulwich Garden Centre - possibly replaced with flats

Thanks for posting the article, the building looks promising. -
East Dulwich Garden Centre - possibly replaced with flats

22 flats, right next to the station - they'll be snapped up in no time. Just look at GV15....oh dear. -

What was there before the Garden Centre? I seem to remember that the station building was bigger, and the Garden Centre took over part of it, but maybe that was just the Garden Centre expanding. Late 1980s I'd guess. -

If not, presumably your objection will be ignored and the new betting shop will go ahead.

Dulwich Hi-Fi Station / Car Forecourt

Until the early 90s, the shop that is now Mrs Robinson sold used cars, which I'm pretty sure were all parked up on the pavement. Oh how times change. -
New gym on LL - do you need to subscribe?
Muttley replied to Crepe Suzette's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
You make some fair points, IClaudia. For those who claim ?15 day rate is expensive, let's put it in perspective FFS. There are hundreds of thousands who pay that much and far more to go and watch a football match every week. (Leicester City v Crystal Palace ?23 anyone?). If the prices at esph are too high, people will go elsewhere, there is a choice. I also agree with IClaudia that esph is probably too low profile for its own good. Walking past the building or gazing out of the top deck of the 176, you could easily miss the fact that it's a gym. As I've said before, the signage looks more like a notice for forthcoming building work. Incidentally, I've not stepped inside a gym since I was 16 - and I only went then because it was detention otherwise. -
mightyroar Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > what's the book Muttley? > If I told you that I would be unmasked! The book is French but the 'quotation' attributed to me is in English. I flicked through the book, dictionary in hand, and er, sort of got the gist. A few words weren't in my dictionary.

I would favour scrapping/demolishing the current impersonal monstrosity of a police station and replacing it with a much smaller community police/safer neighbourhoods office on LL (change of use for an empty shop perhaps). It would be permanently staffed and a place where you could drop in and report incidents, get advice, and get a bit of local gossip on the side. Out of curiosity, which office do the local wardens use as their 'base' ?

I was quoted, by name (my real name), in an erotic French novel several years ago. It was one of those books where there was a famous quote at the start of each chapter, only this chapter was quoting me. (I had met the author some time earlier and that line happened to come up in conversation.) One of these days I'm hoping to meet somebody who read it, but I'm not holding out much hope.

In the USA they automatically pass to the right. Americans can't believe it when they come over here and discover we have no system.

Has anyone ever played the Honours game? What you do is pick out a whole load of established famous names from the world of business, sport, showbiz etc and then you have to guess whether they have a knighthood, CBE, OBE, MBE or nothing. Then check the answers. Tom Jones? A knight. (Services to music apparently. And to his bank balance, no doubt.) Nick Faldo? MBE. Ellen McCarthur? Dame. (She was 29 at the time - the only way up is Queen as far as I can tell.) Stephen Fry? Nothing. Kylie Minogue? OBE. Many of these guys are honoured for doing exactly what they wanted to do all their lives, and getting paid handsomely for doing it. The whole thing is a complete lottery, and should be scrapped immediately. Unless they offer me one.

One of those rare glimpses of East Dulwich's past is visible in the building/shops being done up in the strip opposite BBC. You can make out the following sign above the shop fronts: ARSENA CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY Anyone know its history? ARSENA? And any news on what this never-ending rebuild is going to become? They had more than enough space to mention the ED Deli, Mootown, Moxons, William Rose, Hope & Greenwood and others, all of which just happen to be the sort of shops that would fit in comfortably in Telegraph or indeed Daily Mail strongholds like - I don't know - Arundel, or Stow-on-the-Wold, or Corbridge. But they had no space for SMBS or Cheese Block which were here long before all the others.

SMBS The Cheese Block. (Since the Sunday Telegraph blatantly failed to do this in their article today).
