  1. Hi Jools Your story sounds very familiar. Like you, I wanted to try it out, and really hoped it might be the classy little luxury joint to go to for those special occasions. I'd had good reports from others, including Mrs Muttley. Mrs M and I dropped in late one evening after going to the theatre, thinking it would be a great way to top off what had been an excellent night. We sat at one of the small tables near the front, and they started off friendly enough. But once they'd served us a drink and a bite, they really didn't want to know. Every time we tried to get their attention (for another drink) they pointedly avoided making eye contact and their body language suggested they wanted us out of the place as soon as possible. Perhaps this is because there was a very lucrative party going on at the back and they wanted to devote their service to where the big dosh was. But they were just downright rude in a "you are not one of us" kind of way. Finally we got up to pay, and as if by magic, they were all smiles. It seems from the patchy reactions the place gets that some people get this appalling treatment and some people don't. But they need to realise that those of us who are treated this way are going to spread the word. And at their prices, frankly I'm not prepared to give them a second chance. 'Le magic' has gone. Grr. (By the way, how do people pronounce their name? Shan-de-leer or Shon-dell-ee-ay ?)
  2. Mr Cathg now muttering "My secret would still be secure if it wasn't for those meddling kids..."

That's > got to tell you something... Cathg - when you say you "go" to the BRIT, in what capacity?. I note from an earlier posting that you lived in Camberwell in the late 80s, which would make you a very mature BRIT student...but maybe I've misunderstood.
  4. I'm surprised the word buffoon hasn't appeared on this Johnson thread yet. So I thought I'd just throw it in.
  5. The good news is that I just passed the Dutch delivery lorry on LL, and he hadn't parked on the zigzags, so maybe Mr Allen had a word. The bad news is he was parked instead a bit further up, with cars parked on the opposite side of the road. As a result buses couldn't squeeze through. In no time this had created a tailback all the way to the police station and a few drivers who looked like they were about to unleash some road rage.

Why is it that England raise their game for the big opposition, but fall to pieces against the 'minnows' (rugby and cricket)?

This is like one of those party games where only a few people get the rules. I read Azul's original post before he edited it, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was.
  8. Just found this website, don't think it's ever been posted on the Forum before. It lists the V1 and V2 rockets that landed in the area giving the location, date and the number killed. The Co-op bombing on 5th August 1944 was the most shocking, 23 killed, including the mother of one of my neighbours. Doodlebugs on East Dulwich A V1 or V2 landed on Playfield Crescent/Lycott Grove, completely wiping out the latter, but I don't see this in the list.
  9. John Beasley's book about East Dulwich has all the facts you could ever need. Should be a copy in the library or Chener Books. It was also serialised in SE22 magazine if you can find any back issues. To get you started, how about the history of doodlebugs that landed on East Dulwich. Lots of references on the web - see the separate thread on this topic.
  10. *Bob* - registered 02/07 - number of posts2,302, average 5.7 per day. Hmm, I feel a graph coming on. What should go on the X axis?
  11. Just a guess, but wouldn't surprise me if single parents have typically less free time to sit down and indulge in EDF chat. So they would be under-represented on this forum. Let's look at the evidence: Cherry - registered 04/07 - number of posts 3, average 0.01 posts per day Mockney Piers - registered 11/06 - number of posts 4,508, average 10 posts per day And that, members of the jury, is the case for the prosecution.
  12. Just wanted to reinforce the message that it's generally safe round here, I live not far from Whateley Road and have never been mugged nor witnessed any mugging in over 20 years.
  13. In the latest EDGE update (East Dulwich for Good Education) they've called it The Sardine Academy. I think that name could stick. There's an 'open day' (open late afternoon really) at the ED Community Centre on Darrell Road between 4 and 6pm on 9th March. I'm sure it will be more formally advertised elsewhere.

  15. Put it this way, the house achieved about ?15k more than the asking price that the agents originally suggested (and we got their valuation before suggesting the arrangement). However, bear in mind this was in 2006 when things were rather more bullish than they are at the moment.
  16. The whole basis by which estate agents charge is flawed (see Freakonomics). Estate agents want a quick sale, so it's not in their interest to go for a high price. Knocking the price down by ?10k only costs them ?150, and could save them weeks with the property on their books. You should attempt to negotiate a sliding scale that rewards your agent for getting a good price. Smaller agents are more likely to accept such an arrangement than an inflexible large agent with big fluorescent offices (say). For example suppose the agents value your flat at ?250,000. You should offer them a base rate of 1% of the sale price, but 10% of anything they achieve above ?240,000. So if they sell for ?240k they earn ?2.4k, but if they sell for ?260k they earn ?4.6k (close to 2% of the asking price). We sold my parents' house using an arrangement like this. It works!
  17. That was a good local business, very sorry to see it go. I hope the garden centre on upland (?) doesn't go the same way.
  18. I'll still pay a premium to any Chinese or Indian that will offer free range (or 'organic') chicken meals. Coriander, Mr Liu etc have all told me they have no intention of offering that option. Tandoori Nights might be the only Chinese/Indian on LL that does, and even that is only hearsay - can anyone confirm?
  19. Is somebody proposing an EDF golf day?
  20. It's not the quantity Andrew, it's the quality.
  21. I went to a hotel once that was the ultimate in decadence - they even used Evian water to flush the toilets. The hotel was in Evian, which might have had something to do with it.
  22. Speed The Plow, Kevin Spacey & Jeff Goldblum at the Old Vic. Middle scene hard work, but thought the rest was brilliant.
  23. Just wanted to flag this thread again. Everything has gone mysteriously quiet with Dulwich Community Hospital since a meeting got cancelled indefinitely last July. And they were in such a rush to pull down the old buildings in 2006, too. Anyone got any news?
  24. Tucked between the top end of Landells Road and Plough Lane is East Dulwich's quirkiest house. It's a narrow, detached* house that looks like it is sticking out of the back of Le Moulin restaurant. I guess few people even realise it is there. It seems to be an original Victorian house, and was derelict last year but clearly somebody bought it and has been doing it up. Anyone know anything about its history? * as far as I can tell craning my neck over the fence.
  25. Like almost everything apart from Foxtons
