But word has it that this is only partially > due to actual costs... and partially because of > customer expectations. Agree. Pubs are also prepared to pay more for keg as it lasts longer and it takes zero skill to keep it in good condition. Well kept cask always beats keg for me and it amazes me that so many people are prepared to pay ?1.50-?2 more for the keg version. I suppose keg is trendy but most people wouldn't know the difference.
  2. The ?5 Brick Brewery Pale at Dulwich Hamlet will be on keg, as will Goose Island at ?5.80. Keg beer is considerably more expensive anywhere you go. Cask beer is cheaper and I'd be surprised if anywhere around here charges ?5 for cask. The Beer Shop in Nunhead often sells it for under ?4.
  3. We lived in one for years and no regrets at all. Maybe wrong but I think the ones on landells/Sylvester roads are slightly smaller with bathrooms upstairs whereas those on the nunhead side of Peckham Rye Park on Waveney Avenue have bathrooms upstairs. Noise wise there was little difference to a regular house although we did have excellent neighbours and we never had any security issues. As freehold the houses can be extended into the loft as well as having kitchen extensions. Have a look at rightmove for example's of those that have sold that have been extended.
  4. It'll be part of the new Market building. Forza Win have the rooftop site in the same building.
  5. This is highly likely to stay as a pub. Enterprise inns have increasingly moved from a tenanted to a managed model over the last couple of years. Fullers are also doing this. Bermondsey pub company and frontier pubs (eg chandos in Honor Oak) are two of the 'pub groups' owned by EI under which an increasing number of their pubs are being moved.
  6. I have to agree with malumbu on this. The Ivy House is very good but The Blyth Hill Tavern is outstanding. One of the best pubs in London. As for the Crown and Greyhound... nothing has changed. Should be great but appallingly managed.
  7. Youngs have bought Redcomb pubs who operate The Cherry Tree. I would imagine this will lead to changes.
  8. Another recommendation for Mehmet. Our garden was all concrete and Mehmet removed the lot and laid turf. It's now totally unrecognisable and we're delighted with it. Mehmet's hardworking, full of ideas, good value and a lovely bloke.
  9. Heard that this is set to open on Lordship Lane. Great news as it will be run by the same people as the Crofton Park one which is fantastic.
  10. Totally agree. The whole area is transformed. Put in a few 'dead ends' as per the Walthamstow model and quality of life will dramatically improve. I'm not overly sure why the council wouldn't do it. Surely a matter of time.
  11. Signs on the windows and The Gowlett's own Twitter account state they 'hope to be back soon'. I really hope this is the case. A great pub and one that would be sorely missed.
  12. The 'mini Holland' scheme introduced in Walthamstow is an ideal model Southwark should be looking at. The 'village' area especially was a rat run similar to Bellenden, Adys etc and the scheme has pushed all traffic to the major roads with traffic being cut by half in the streets where the scheme was introduced.

    Megaflow system

Thanks for the replies. Keano77 - I was under the impression that a large tank was part of the megaflow system. Is that not correct?? Dogkennel - is your architect suggesting having two boilers then, one for the loft and one for the rest of the house??
  14. We are currently renovating a three bedroom terraced house and are being advised by our builder to install a megaflow system, The house will initially only have one bathroom but we plan to convert the loft in the next couple of years so will have a further bathroom there. Any advice on whether this system is crucial will be much appreciated as we are short of both cash and the space to accommodate the water tank.

Was desperately hoping The Prince Albert on Bellenden Road would become something similar after the refurb a couple of years ago. Sadly not to be.
  16. I think it's a mistake to judge primary schools based on test results and ofsted report (the two are very much linked) alone. It is very easy to manipulate key stage 2 results and numerous schools will play the system and use various dubious practices to ensure excellent results. This certainly doesn't benefit the children who miss out on a balanced, all round education.

Do your friends always carry out loft and aide return extentions to maximise profit??

    Man of Kent

I've heard a rumour the Man of Kent in Nunhead is up for sale. It could do with a bit of tidying up and some cask ale on but I hope there's not too much change and all the locals aren't pushed out. A refurb along the lines of the white horse would do fine.

All four cask ales are ?3.50 a pint in The Beer Shop.
  20. i always think Brick Brewery is expensive at around 3.80 a pint when you consider they're brewing it themselves, overheads must be minimal and they've hardly gone to any expense on the decor . I like the place but when you consider the Beer Shop sells Brick for ?3.50 its starting to take the piss a little bit.

  22. I couldn't comment on the 'craft' beers, but I had a great pint of Head in a Hat cask ale in The Flying Pig on Friday for ?3.70. That's actually pretty decent compared to some others locally e.g. Old Nun's Head and Franklins are both ?4.00 a pint. Not keen on the restaurant bit at the back but I always find the FP bar area pretty good - dark with a bit of atmosphere.
  23. While I realise that most of the local pubs encourage families to visit it's important for parents to remember that a pub is an adult environment. I was in The Herne last year when an obnoxious parent reprimanded two men in their fifties who were having a quiet chat for daring to swear (extremely quietly I might add as i was on the table next to them and couldn't hear them). If you don't want your children to hear bad language then don't take them to a pub.
