  1. Yes, she never seemed to find personal happiness sadly. She also rescues and rehomes cats too.
  2. That's a great map El Pibe. Interesting to note that along with the railway (that would lead to the construction of Beelenden Road and surrounding streets) the canal hasn't yet been extended to Peckham. Whilst the railway brought people, it was the canal that brought the goods for the shops that became the 'Golden Mile' of South London. It's remarkable how much an area can ebb an flow in just 150 years approx.
  3. Personally I never pay attention to the name of a business. If they are selling something I want to buy at a price I'm happy to pay then who cares what they call themselves. I like Bellenden Road. I like the cafe there (the breakfast one) and I've gotten happily drunk a few times in the Victoria Inn. It's still a Road that caters for everyone imo. But it's not a village - never has been and never will be.
  4. I love Doris Day! Calamity Jane has to be one of the greatest movies ever imo.
  5. Just a ridicuous ploy to sell an area as something it's not. It's a bit like selling factory made jam as rural homemade jam by putting a pretty rural label on it. Bellenden Road has never been part of a 'village'. It and the streets around it were built on the fruit gardens that predated it, from the 1870's onwards. It came along with the railway as part of the growing then suburbs of London. If estate agents were to do their research though, they would also find out that it was disproportionately occupied by French Huguenots in it's early days, hence businesses and streets with French names, like the Montpelier and Choumert Road.
  6. Tfl have tweeted it as an RTC.

    Kate Bush

There's an interesting story that the record company didn't want to release Wuthering Heights as the first single at all, but Ms Bush put her foot down and insisted. Showed her label how little they knew. Can you even see that scenario happening today? Having said that though, no artist or band needs to rely on big labels for finding an audience for their music anymore, but it hasn't led to any greater number of great talents emerging. Maybe truly talented superstars are few and far between after all.
  8. I can see the headlines now..... East Dulwich Gazette - Is local white van driver latest victim of Hunger Games Killer?
  9. I think you are both right El Pibe and Bob. And of course it's only going to get worse in the run up to the general election, as all parties pull the wool over voters eyes with incorrect stats, analysis and misinformation. For example this.... http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/ramesh-patel/growth-cameron-austerity_b_2007552.html How are voters exspected to make sense of complex fiscal measurements to know the truth. It's far easier if the Tories continue as they are doing by claiming Labour ruined the economy and Labour bounce back with 'oh no we didn't'. Politics has been reduced to that level of pantomime debate.

They are all gone apparently.... :( http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-26786937 But I have no respect for the sucmbag touts that got tickets to resell them at ?1000. I'll buy the live DVD when it comes out instead :)
  11. I completely agree John.
  12. No don't ask Barber...because he will have to tell you about all the bad contracts the Liberal council sold us into when they were in charge. Companies tender for contracts lasting years, and that's why you see the same contractors doing all the work. It would be a bureaucratic nightmare if there where multiple contracters tendering on a regular basis. You only have to look at how difficult it is for Southwark to manage one contracter to see that.
  13. And maybe you'd like to learn the art of disagreeing without making a personal dig?
  14. If someone steps out in front of a car, leaving not enough distance for the driver to stop, then it is the pedestrian's fault. Elderly people do step out in front of cars sometimes. The driver hit the brake which shows a reaction to something he or she did not expect. Could the driver have anticipated that the elderly lady was about to cross? We don't know. We weren't there. The Police will decide that. There really is no point in trying to guess what did or didn't happen any more than guessing who is to blame (if anyone is).
  15. I think Farage is bonkers personally, but I do love the mahem he's causing amongst the ranks of the main parties. I agree Loz. It would be completely self defeating to leave the EU.
  16. You are now assuming the driver was to blame and that speed was an issue. From the information given, it seems to be an unfortunate accident, where the driver is not to blame. Why does everything on this forum seem to turn into an inquistion when vehicles are involved. It's bad enough an elderly lady has been injured. Can't it be left at that?
  17. Wow, sounds like I'm in for fun and games then. Typical that the clothes I can't wash at 60 are they ones they most like. But if dry cleaning works then that's what I'll do with those. Thanks for all the info and advice everyone x
  18. That's great news Fox.
  19. I'm washing all my clothes Peguin. Is that enough to get rid of any eggs that may be in those clothes? I then intend to put them in those vacuum bags to keep any new moths off them. I did read that some people freeze the bags (and washed clothes) to kill everything off, but is that necessary? Anyone know?
  20. This whole debate around quality is nonsense now. DJs play off laptops via usb connected sound cards to give the best quality sound. I listen through sennheiser headphones (which are pretty much as good as it gets) and the quality is good enough. You can now link to speakers via USB wifi as well. The need to have lots of seperates in every room doing everything has gone, unless absolute quality is paramount.
  21. Thank you for posting the details Renata (and maybe people will think before posting gossip next time?). I, like everyone else, hope the elderly lady makes a full recovery, and wish her and her family well. PS...mynamehere....a collision with an 80 year old at any speed is going to cause serious injuries. At that age, bodies are more fragile, especially if there are underlying conditions. I don't thinks it's helpful to automatically assume the car must have been going faster. I'm sure the driver is shocked too. I think most people would be very upset to collide with a pedestrian, even when it is not they who are at fault. Let's leave it to the Police to do their job. There's really no need to analyse what if's here.
  22. I would be keen to hear on this one too. Am just ripping up the only carpet I have left, after finding a cashmere cardigan that no longer looks like cashmere :D I've been lucky to not be affected by the moth plague so far (mothballs have always seemed to work), but given they seem to have eaten just about every one else's wool and cotton in South London, it was only a matter of time before they got me.
  23. What I like about spotify is that I will listen to something on there I would never have listened to, or considered buying before. Do sites like spotify reduce copyright theft? I'm not sure. I subscribe to netflix and I love it. I'd much rather pay a fiver or so per month for that than watch live TV, and have to fork out for a licence. But again, does netflix have any impact on reducing copyright theft? Or is is just putting more traditional forms of renting films out of business? Personally, I think the future is one where we don't need to own CDs or DVDs at all. A monthly fee will be all it costs to have access to much bigger libraries than we could ever afford to buy or find space to keep. And music companies (like film companies have) need to get on board instead of wondering whatever happened to their highly profitable monopolies of both artists and CD sales.
  24. That's an incredible story Fox. I do think there are a range of conditions that could be treated by diet if only more research were done. You mentioned depression, and I know a lot about that. And similarly have done research into a range of alternatives that can compliment or replace medication, including diet. It's like a car isn't it. If you put the right fuel in, it will run smoothly. Put in the wrong fuel or oil etc, and things start to go wrong.
  25. An ordinary coach Jeremy costs 300k+. That's is the price for everyone. Heavy commercial vehicles are expensive to build, whether it's a combined harvester or a HGV lorry or a train. We are not overpaying for these buses. I guess there are vehicles that come to the end of their useable service every year, so you would expect new buses to be bought to replace them every few years. Buses, like cars, the older they get, the more they cost to maintain, and the more they break down - so it makes economic sense to replace vehicles at some point. Transport is expensive. That's why much of it is state subsidised.
