  1. Funny this thread has come along just as I've been having problems keeping my cat in, so perhaps can get some advice on it. I've got two cats, one lazy female who stays in the flat or garden but won't stray beyond, one male who likes to roam a bit further but neither seem to be hunters: they've never brought anything in. Still, for their own safety and everyone's peace and quiet, I've always kept them in at night. However, the boy cat is now waking me up earlier and earlier bashing on the cat flap and yowling to be let out. I'm getting less and less sleep! I've tried playing lots with them before bed to wear them out and giving them a late snack. But doesn't seem to be working. For some of the reasons other people have mentioned, I'd like to continue keeping them in, but only if I can somehow train boy cat to not cause a fuss at 5am. Any tips for training? They are 5-6 years old, I got them from the Celia Hammond a year or so ago so no idea what training they had before. Help! And thanks in advance...
  2. I mapped the route onto google a while back http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=218208326307037829098.0004a87d382672a9e6e31&msa=0&ll=51.464863,-0.08287&spn=0.016924,0.038581. Whilst the park is closed I'm going Wells Way - Southampton Way - Peckham Rd (briefly, to turn right) - Lyndhurst Way, which is fine, and probably quicker than the park anyway. Never had any unpleasantness on the route, but I've never gone that way in the dark. I definitely wouldn't cycle through the park at night.
  3. Also very handy for picking up parcels from the post office on Silvester Road. Can't think of any bad points about this part of ED!
  4. Another advantage of the Oxford Tube, it is also a Megabus http://uk.megabus.com/Default.aspx. So if you book in advance through Megabus can sometimes get a much cheaper deal, though you do have to make sure you get the right one. Goes from the Tube stop on Buckingham Palace Road, which I think is up by the shopping centre.
  5. Anyone else finding that those liners are always leaking and holey when it comes time to take them out to the main bin? Always end up having to double bag them and then clean the caddy each time. Or am I doing it wrong?
  6. Thanks for suggested routes around Burgess Park. The Southampton Way route is probably quicker than my normal one, just not as pretty :)
  7. The E&C north bypass is great, you even have your own cycle lane traffic lights. Don't know why anyone would cycle round the roundabout proper, been too many accidents.
  8. Hope this link works, but this is a map of the route I do as far as Waterloo, which is basically what TFL recommended for me a few years ago. For Oxford Circus it maybe easier to go over Westminster Bridge instead. This may not be the quickest way, but is a nice quiet route through the old canal path and Burgess Park and back streets all the way until after E&C (where I use the cyclist's bypass around the north side). That said, Burgess Park is part closed now, so am having to figure out a new route for that bit. Anyway, hope this is useful http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid=218208326307037829098.0004a87d382672a9e6e31&msa=0&ll=51.456681,-0.077419&spn=0.033747,0.077162
  9. First year I've tried my hand at proper gardening and loving it. Because it's all been a bit of an experiment this year, I tried planting a load of slightly random seeds in a medium sized planter to see what would happen. I chose seeds based on what might be ok to sow later in the season and what looked like fun, so got saltwort (kind of like milder thinner samphire, I guess), spring onions, pak choi and sorrel. Despite doing very little other than watering them, I now have a monster crop of pak choi and sorrel, and the other two have come on nicely as well. But now I need some inspiration for what to do with saltwort, pak choi, spring onion and sorrel! Any good recipe suggestions? Might also be needing the green tomato suggestions as well as they've been really slow to ripen.
  10. Thanks, will take a look when I get home. Pretty sure it will be blocked from work, boo.
  11. Anywhere showing the WSOP main event highlights on TV/online?
  12. Um, I don't think anyone above is complaining really about the change, just trying to figure out what happened. And saying that it would be good to have some sort of official notice about it, or email if possible, so people aren't just floundering as I was when I tried to send something this morning. No problem with doing housekeeping if I know that it's required, and yes, donations are a good idea of course for such a great resource.
  13. Yep, just cleared my inbox and now I can send, but can't actually reach anyone because all their inboxes are full. Trying to arrange something for tomorrow night, so it's a bit frustrating, and I assume most people have no idea. Is it possible to do a bulk email to members?
  14. Spooks usually films about now, and has often used this area, so that's plausible. But check for the little flourescent location/unit signs directing crew to the shoot. Signs for Spooks start SP (e.g. SP LOC, SP BASE etc). Can often have a guess at the production from the initials used in the location signs.
  15. Er, "sir", Dan?? Anyway, it would indeed be naughty if they were blocking non US players from getting in to withdraw their bankroll. But as for the the other accusations of dishonesty my point was that the issues they are being charged over appear to be technicalities and open to interpretation. They look more like a law enforcement agency (with shadowy pressure from somewhere) fishing for spurious reasons to close the sites down, rather than recognisable wrongdoing. Unless I've misinterpreted?
  16. You are playing from the UK pk, rather than the US, and I assume they keep those assets separate. From the sounds of it they've seized the domains and bank accounts, which effectively shuts down play even if the software still functions. http://www.boingboing.net/2011/04/16/fbi-shuts-down-poker.html I should say I know Dan to be a fine live player, though of course cannot comment for his online skills. Mine aren't up to much, but it's still fun even if I'm not making millions out of it.
  17. Are you citing this as evidence that the sites have been screwing over players? Because if you look closely at the actual charges and allegations they don't relate to anything like that. It seems to be largely about technicalities regarding "laundering" gambling money by allowing purchase of merchandise, whether banks were aware that the funds being transferred were for gambling etc http://mashable.com/2011/04/16/online-poker/. So mine and ????'s points about the unlikelihood of online poker being rigged still stand. This move looks to be stepping up a campaign against online poker in the States in general, which has been lobbied hard for by bricks and mortar casinos and Vegas businesses and the like. As I understand it will come down to an interpretation of the law which one side says makes online poker illegal and the other disagrees. As a poker player himself, I hope Obama won't allow these sites to be shut down but I bet (ha) there's a lot of money behind the anti campaign.
  18. Ah Dan, the poker conspiracy theorist :P I think it's pretty unlikely that the poker sites are rigged, especially the big ones, for several reasons. The data for millions and millions of hands is out there and available, I'm sure if there was a non random bias someone would have some decent evidence for it by now. All the big sites all have auditors for their random number generators, so it would have to be quite some conspiracy. Besides, they hardly need to. They are making a mint on the rakes from the huge numbers of people who are playing, getting busted for rigging the hands would lose them most of their custom, surely not worth it? But I think the perception that this is happening is quite interesting. I suspect that it's a result of our human inability to really understand probability and statistics, confirmation bias etc etc (there are probably a ton of juicy cognitive biases that apply to online poker, check the terrifying list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cognitive_biases). Found a nice article here that explores some of the conspiracy theories in more detail http://www.onlinepokerfaq.com/guide/conspiracy.html. That said, if anyone does have solid evidence for rigged sites I'd love to hear it. Though I wouldn't love to think I've been being conned by Party Poker all this time.
  19. Perhaps, or perhaps their members are just concerned for their jobs and the impact of cuts on society. But personally am not that interested in Unison's motives for calling this demo and I don't think it will be only Unison members there. For me, there is huge value in showing the numbers of people who care about what is happening and give the council at least pause for thought if not the ammunition to stand up to central government. Maybe naive, but I can't just stand by and watch valuable public services being taken to bits.
  20. Not personally affiliated with Southwark Unison, but saw this via Southwark Save our Services and am planning on going. Are others coming along to this tomorrow? http://www.southwarkunison.co.uk/wp/?page_id=490
  21. Bother, I was hoping that no-one else had noticed the crabapples so there would still be some left at the weekend for me to go nab. Save a few for me please :) They aren't just on Crystal Palace Road by the way, some of the side roads have them too. I think there may even be a couple of different varieties, they look different anyway. A bit further afield, but I cycle past absolutely tons of elderberries on my way down the old Surrey Canal path, they're at the Burgess Park end. Anyone seen any closer?
  22. Thanks for clarification. Looks like I'll be joining both! Alec will send a PM about the sander, thanks for the offer.
  23. Oh yes, very similar, though without the option to charge for hires by the looks of it. Wish I could search it without having to join up though (unless I'm being dense). Are you a member? Many people nearby on it? Cheers.
  24. I saw a mention of Ecomodo (http://ecomodo.com/) in today's Observer (http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/aug/22/how-to-find-clean-air, scroll down), and really like the idea - a site that enables you to hire out your own equipment on short terms loans/hire other people's stuff. In general there are some very random items offered on there at the moment, but also some useful bits and bobs. I went on it in the hope of finding a local with an electric sander I could borrow (so by the way, has anyone got a smallish sander I can borrow for a bit?), but not many of us in the area are on it and no-one with what I needed, unfortunately. So is anyone using this site? Any good? Been having a bit of a chat with them on twitter today and they seem very nice, I suggested they try posting on places like this but I'm impatient so thought I'd get the conversation started, plus I think it has the potential to be a Good Thing if enough local people are on it.
