    The Patch

I think it would be more encouraging if the people behind the Patch engaged with the forum and told us their plans etc. Have found their communications throughout their development and opening etc a bit weird and confusing. But in the meantime, they seem to be more active on their facebook page so would check in there for updates https://www.facebook.com/dulwichpatch?ref=ts&fref=ts. Looks like a grand opening on the 11th, maybe? Personally I think the menu looks lovely but pricey so will be only visiting on special occasions if reviews are good after the proper opening, unless I somehow win the lottery. Would have been great to have a more affordable local but ah well.
  2. Oh. No, I thought I was just continuing the joke! 3. A good idea. Although I'm very familiar with that classic thread already. Amazing. 4. Dammmmmnn. You're quite right. And I should be using this post to get all defensive about my true identity as one of the directors of No Flies and accuse everyone of pursuing personal vendettas. I'll get it right next time, promise, and remember to add the requisite telltale spelling mistakes and bizarre punctuation. 5. Can vouch for No-Flies, they are friends of mine. Haven't bought or sold through them but the day I want to I'd choose them in a heartbeat. Lovely guys, very knowledgeable and conscientious and have had an excellent success rate since they started. Plenty of other recommendations for them on the forum if you have a search.
  6. Ah OK, I think maybe the ASL just hasn't been painted yet, I probably couldn't see it yesterday because cards were stopped on it. Seemed today like the phasing had changed yet again so there was no right turn filter light!
  7. Have now been through it since they have changed the lights phasing and road marking clearer, which helps. But still no cyclist provision. Not sure why the ASL would have been removed. It's hard enough along here, mostly because when I move right and take the lane to make the right turn, I've been subjected to abuse etc from passing cars, wherever I position myself (ie, far left of the lane to be technically correct, far right to allow cars to undertake etc). It would have been so helpful to have a clearer cycle lane for right turns that could avoid that. In the meantime, I've heard back from Renata. She wasn't the right person to contact, as Jimmyraj above said, but has very kindly passed on my message to the person who is. It was a PM but hopefully she won't mind me sharing that the council officer said they weren't aware of the works, which apparently means they aren't Southwark or TFL works, but likely emergency utility works. She said she'd keep me posted.
  8. OMG. The other thread hasn't even gone below the fold yet.
  9. I am fascinated by idiotic behaviour on the roads. From drivers who think their "right" to be there and behave any way they like trumps a cyclist's or pedestrian's right to safety, from cyclists who seem convinced that the rules of the road don't apply to them, forcing those crossing on a green man to dodge them as they fly through, and from pedestrians who seem too lazy to check the road before stepping out, despite the extreme possible risk to them from this stupidity. We all make mistakes, have the odd lapse in concentration, but I don't think that's the only explanation. Whenever someone steps out into the road gormlessly and forces me to brake, I want to dismount and go ask them precisely what their thought processes were and what went wrong. (I don't of course, maybe one day I'll do that all day and then write up the results...) Most of this, laws and morals aside, is just about common courtesy, manners, and having a bit of empathy for our fellow travellers of all kinds. Why do some people find that so hard? It's NOT war out there, we're all just people trying to get somewhere. Like, chill out...
  10. I've PMed Renata Hamvas. Maybe is better to email her directly, will try that as well. The problem with pulling forward to wait to go right is that you are blocking anyone coming out of Lyndhurst way and going across to turn right. The light phasing means that they go after the right turn light from Peckham Road has been green, but could still mean that people are in the way depending on how heavy traffic is. Could even lead to a nasty crash if someone pulls into that space on a red unaware that people might be coming through it.
  11. Not just me then. I really can't understand what the aim of this work has been. Will try and find someone at the council to ask about this.
  12. I often return to East Dulwich on my cycle home via Peckham Road, turning right into Lyndhurst Way. There have been roadworks here for a few weeks which have made the right turn a confusing process, but I assumed that was temporary. Now they seem to be mostly done and it's no better. It seems people turning right have no lane of their own, and so when the right turn light is red (but straight on is green) they either have to sit in the outer lane blocking the traffic trying to go straight, or pull right forward which appears to be effectively running the red and feels like you are sitting in the middle of the road. I can't work out where I'm meant to position myself. Added to that there is no longer an Advanced Stop Line or any other provision for cyclists. It's pretty horrible. Or am I missing something? Lots of ED dwellers must use this route, am I just being dense? About to write to the councillor responsible (guessing it's Renata Hamvas) or contact the council but just thought I'd check if it was only me, or if others have figured it out.
  13. Oh, I guess it could have been a man with long hair, apologies for confusion, went past too quick. Hope it wasn't as serious as it looked for the guy :(
  14. If I recall correctly it wasn't at the lights, but was a little way further down the hill, maybe by the bus stop?
  15. I rode past after the accident and I guess before they closed the road. Could see a woman lying in the road being attended to by paramedics. I really hope she is OK :(
  16. I think the original aim of this thread was to get away from this cycling vs driver stuff, which happens enough elsewhere on the forum (and everywhere else, ad nauseum), and discuss other cycling issues. I wasn't aiming to restart that debate, but had hoped to find out more research in the area. I've done more checking, and can't turn up anything. Might email the London Cycling Campaign. If no-one has taken the time to go through accident reports it seems like an opportunity missed.
  17. So sad to hear about the cyclist's death in West Dulwich yesterday. Whenever a fatality or serious injury occurs on our roads, particularly in relation to lorries, it seems to spark a "who's in the wrong" debate as was the case yesterday with a freight industry body (http://cyclelondoncity.blogspot.co.uk/2013/09/freight-association-declares-war-on.html) saying that cyclists need to take more responsibility for their actions, and cycling groups calling for lorries to be regulated, fitted with safety devices or having better driver training. In these discussions, the research and information being referred to seems pretty sketchy to me, on both sides (e.g. references to the fact that 100% of lorries when stopped have been found to be breaking the law in some way, or references to numbers of accidents etc, neither necessarily leading to a particular conclusion about cycle safety). I want to know what the reality is, in order to keep myself safe on the road when riding. So I'm wondering, has anyone seen an article or piece of research that looked at the accident reports in these situations to work out what actually happened? Is it always a matter of cyclists getting caught on the inside? Is this due to overtaking lorries, and what can you do if that happens? Or is it due to cyclists riding in dangerous and unsighted positions? The prevailing view seems to be that it's always about riding on the inside, but what if overtaking lorries in slow traffic can also be very dangerous for reasons I haven't thought of? And what if some cyclists have managed to avoid serious injury by taking a particular sort of action, I'd like to know that too. It's not for my personal info, I'm also keen to know if junction design (for example) or campaign messages from both sides are being based on evidence of this sort, or conjecture?
  18. Oh thanks! For sure? They could make that clearer, reads like you have to activate each top up with a tube journey. In that case, I'll be doing that. Not sure I understand how they've arrived at the figure of ?24 million costs for allowing cash payments. 19. Don't think that works for auto-top up, see https://oyster.tfl.gov.uk/oyster/link/0002.do. It's why I never use it, much as I'd like to, I almost never make tube journeys. It's a pain. Also, last time I tried to top up my oyster past tube closing time, the shops that do it that were open said they couldn't top it up past a certain time, which seems bizarre. Was in the centre of town, thankfully, so could buy a paper ticket from the machine. So I hope they change that if they are going to ban cash payments. Would also have been stuck last week when in a hurry and the newsagents was myseriously shut. Can't see it makes much of a difference to bus speeds allowing the odd cash payment, really, and can think of many instances when it would make life difficult.
  20. What NickT said. In my experience it ends up taking much more time to edit from a DVD either because you have to convert the footage to a more usable format or if you don't do that, having to render it constantly in the timeline, only to watch it fall apart with a load of weird green flashes anyway. And even if you get it work, it looks awful. Is there no tape master? Can't offer to help for free either, I'm afraid.
  21. If the Sanderson are still doing their Mad Hatter's tea (and it looks like they are http://www.sandersonlondon.com/en-us/#/explore/?id=/sanderson-london-mad-hatters-tea/) that's an interesting experience, and tasty.
  22. I haven't used it, but Lordship Lane Vets lists this place as an emergency clinic: South London Emergency and Referral Clinic 23 The High Parade Streatham High Rd London SW16 1EX 020 8677 0976 http://www.southlondonemergencyclinic.co.uk/.
  23. My cat genuinely does have dietary requirements, would be extremely narked to find others had been feeding him and therefore messing with his diet. I'd never feed another person's cat for exactly that reason.
  24. I also had them at the door, which I closed on them after I saw his ADT insignia and heard his opening "this isn't a sales pitch" gambit (always a clear sign that something *is* a sales pitch). Really loathe doorstepping like this of any kind, it's annoying but also potentially upsetting for the vulnerable, particularly if they are scare-mongering about personal safety. So I had a whinge on twitter at them, gave them this thread link (which they have apparently "raised internally") and they've asked me to email adtuk.customersolutions@tycoint.com so that it's properly logged. So I suggest people do posting here might also want to do that.
  25. Royal festival hall is quite good for that too. Free wifi like the Barbican. If you are a member you can use the members space on the 6th floor or wherever it is.
