  1. Am enjoying this silly but seasonal game http://monsterandmonster.com/winterwalk/. It's quite zen.
  2. Interesting! There is a sign early which says 1997 (on a school listing heads?) on it so is after that.
  3. Shout if you need a guide! Happy to ride in and show you the route if am free.
  4. More like 40min or under taking it easy (my last journey that way took 35 minutes at around 17kmh, not very speedy). Could definitely do it in a lot less at full pelt. Usually I go via back streets to Elephant, then over Waterloo Bridge and up Wellington Street. Let me know if a full route would be helpful.
  5. nunhead_man that would definitely be less direct, although using the backstreets it's also a bit nicer than oval/vauxhall bridge. I think via Clapham would be a better compromise though, personally. It's actually quite a nice ride for the most part.
  6. Well, it depends how fast you are, not sure this would be faster but it's the most pleasant route I've found to get to that end of town. I sometimes work in South Ken, and go to Herne Hill, then through Brockwell Park, and onto Brixton Water Lane. I then follow the marked cycle route via Lambert Road and Narbonne Avenue to Clapham Common. Across the common to Cedars Rd, stay on that through to Battersea, then turn into Battersea park at the roundabout, and go round via Carriage Drive South and then West, then out onto Albert Bridge road and over Albert Bridge. Straight onto Oakley St and then from there I guess you could head down the Kings road. Hope that makes sense! But let me know if you want any more details.
  7. Oh dear, a whole load of ripped open black rubbish bags and stuff everywhere on Cyrena Road just off Whateley Road. Also some outside a property on Barry Road as well. Have reported both to the council and they said they would be sorted Monday or Tuesday. Since in both cases they were heavily ripped it does look like maybe someone had moved them and opened them to have a look through, but that did have the effect of revealing that in both cases there were lots of soft furnishings and/or clothes. So whilst the original owner may not have been the fly tipper, perhaps they are not aware that there are textile recycling banks at both Peckham Rye (by the cafe) and Sainbury's? I think they take basically anything textile which can then be given to someone who needs it or recycled into something new. If anyone did see who dumped all that stuff maybe PM me and I can add it to the info I gave the council. I wish some people would have a bit more care for our shared environment, it's so depressing to see this! :(
  8. Very sad. This is not a newspaper, obviously, but thought it may be useful to share the Samaritan's guidelines for the media on reporting deaths of this sort as I think a lot of this is relevant to their discussion in public fora as well http://www.samaritans.org/media-centre/media-guidelines-reporting-suicide/advice-journalists-suicide-reporting-dos-and-donts.
  9. I don't think there is any cause to be that concerned yet. It's not nearly as contagious as you've implied, "easily" is not at all correct. This article has a good run down of some of the myths about Ebola http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/oct/09/ebola-highly-contagious-virus-myths-outbreak-epidemic including it's relatively low contagion rate. A quote from someone at Public Health England in the link below: "If you are symptomatic [of Ebola] and infectious you are not going to be in a position to be hopping on a plane". My understanding in the Spanish case is that there were clear failings in the protocol and some sub standard equipment that is probably to blame. The constant scare-mongering from some sections of the media isn't helping with this. Many more people will die from flu this year, in this country, but you rarely hear much about that. And many many more from lots of other very preventable diseases that are pretty unpleasant. I think our sense of risk about our health is really very skewed. Should it arrive in this country, we have lots of measures in place, they were wargaming this scenario just this week http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/oct/09/ebola-outbreak-simulations-tested-uk-hospitals. However, it's a different story in the poorer parts of West Africa, where they are having to turn infected patients away from hospitals because they have run out of beds. I completely agree that more needs to be done in these regions, it's clear that places like Sierra Leone need outside help. People shouldn't be dying unnecessarily from this anywhere. And, if it becomes completely uncontrollable there, then the risk to the UK does increase, but the infrastructure is completely different here. I'd be much more concerned about what I could do to prevent all these other much more likely causes of death in this country http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/vsob1/mortality-statistics--deaths-registered-in-england-and-wales--series-dr-/2012/sty-causes-of-death.html
  10. Have a watch www.channel4.com/programmes/grand-designs/4od#3764097. Not much there before, empty yard basically.
  11. Just watched the episode, very impressive, even if it wouldn't be to my taste. Classic Grand Designs wildly escalating budget scenario, ouch. It's on Bawdale Road, round the back of Franklin's Farm shop. The entrance is next to the fireplace shop, Junction something?
  12. My go-to soft drink in pubs is a virgin mary, or at least a tomato juice with a lemon and something else in it to add interest. Delicious and grown-up and not something you get through fast. I always get a big glass of tap water to go with it for that impulse to pick something up and have a drink. Not a fan of other sweet drinks or drinking lots of juices (surprisingly calorific too), but do love a root beer and would second the coconut water, yum. Not seen either in any pubs/bars though. Otherwise maybe an interesting cordial like elderflower, SMB foods has some.
  13. Signed. Have been following this story for a while. I was taken for a quite weirdly magical tour around the estate when there were only a few people left in there. Given that the housing deal was done, the main campaign at that point was to save all the trees, which, in a lesser scandal, had also been massively undervalued by the council and were about to be chopped down. I understand (hope) they've at least partly won that battle (more here http://elephantandcastleurbanforest.com/). Part of this is around affordable housing quotas, what this really means, and whether this is enforced. How have Lend Lease been allowed to not even meet the minimum 35% quota in this case? I wonder where all the residents who were forced out have now ended up. It's shameful.
  14. Not sure Rodneybewes was calling giggirl's integrity into question (since that would be folly) but rather saying that there could be a difficult future scenario with a bad review, where the tradesperson involved claims it was posted as blackmail to get it removed and the poster banned, and it would end up as one person's word against another. Tricky. Wouldn't it be nice if you could just rely on people to be decent human beings?
  15. Sorry, not time to map this properly but basically I head across Peckham Rye Park - Over to Somerton Road, Left down Waveney, Right along forester road, on to Linden Grove and past the cemetery, over the double mini roundabout, along St Asaph Road, round past Brockley station onto Malpas Road, all the way until you get to New Cross Road. Right turn here a bit tricky, but can usually get out with a car crossing, then can either head up onto Greenwich High Road and into Greenwich, or turn left onto Deptford Church Street, onto Creekside and then right on the A200. From there, in theory, there are ways on the Thames Cycle Path but I tried that the other day to get to near the 02 and it was an absolute nightmare, terrible signage, construction works in the way. If anyone's got good suggestions for that bit would love to hear them!

    Day Trips

Could also have a look at parts of the London Loop if after some walks not too far from central London but with a bit of countryside http://www.walklondon.org.uk/route.asp?R=5.

    Day Trips

@newgirl It's about 50 minutes by train from Clapham Junction and I think about ten quid return off peak, less with a network railcard (about six). Trains are once an hour on Saturdays. Then you have about a mile walk from the station to the top of Box Hill along the North Downs way (up to London Road/A24, under the subway, right until the North Downs Way and then over some stepping stones and up a LOT of steps). Then you head to the National Trust centre near the memorial and can pick up a leaflet for the Box Hill Hike and/or follow the signs, it's very well sign posted. It took about 4hrs 45 minutes including to and from the station, and not including a leisurely lunch :)

    Day Trips

Been wanting to do a camping trip to Mersea for ages, especially for the food and the vineyard. Glad to hear it was good. Was looking for a day trip for yesterday with friends and thought about trying to get out to see the Sea Forts, but boat trips were booked http://londonist.com/2013/05/the-abandoned-estuary-sea-forts-from-wwii.php. Instead took a train to Box Hill and Westhumble from Clapham and did the Box Hill Hike http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/cs/Satellite?blobcol=urldata&blobheader=application%2Fpdf&blobkey=id&blobtable=MungoBlobs&blobwhere=1349122056119&ssbinary=true with a stop at the King William IV pub in Mickelham, which did an excellent lunch. You really feel you've earnt it with the walk, too, which is pretty demanding. Also recommend Dungeness, which is sort of bleak and beautiful, also with a good pub.
  19. Huh, never heard of Ingress before. Downloading. Looks like I'll have to win back ED for the resistance...
  20. Liking Zen Internet fibre package so far, independent and friendly, but not the cheapest. When I was looking into it before plusnet seemed like the next best deal IIRC.
  21. I went to the source last night to see it, at Victoria Park Gardens. I recommend it, is a sound installation as well and quite beautiful. On for the next five nights now, I think. http://www.artangel.org.uk/projects/2014/spectra
  22. Thanks all. I found some info about Good Jumble on the forum here but no word when the next one is. Will do some more digging. I've tried ebay before for selling and for clothes it can be a bit dispiriting, it's a fair amount of work and then you rarely get more than a couple of quid profit, if that. Unless you have some really standout pieces with a good name on them. I think if you source stuff specifically for sale you'll do much better, I'm just having a clearout :) @sammyjo, Ideally I'd either do a bulk sale for the right amount or sell them all individually at one table top sale or similar. They are a mix of proper 70s/80s vintage and some newer clothes from places like Mango and Oasis, so middling High Street stuff. Sized between 12-16.
  23. Does anyone know of a good tabletop sale around here or other good way to sell a load of women's clothes? Some genuine 80s and earlier vintage, some newer items. Have enough of them that Ebay is a bit of a faff, and I could sell individually via the forum but really would rather just do it all in one sale. Have looked into car boots in the past but there don't seem to be any good ones around here, and I think a clothes specific sale might mean they would do better. Any advice very welcome!
  24. This is my route into town https://goo.gl/maps/8dcTz. The maps is from from The Plough to Holborn, but just turn left at New Oxford Street instead and head along to Oxford Circus straight down there and then Oxford Street. It's pretty much all quiet back streets and avoids the hills. At New Kent Road you are using the cycle route along the pavement, crossing at the lights and then straight down through the cycling bypass so avoiding Elephant and Castle. If you look at Google Map's cycle route suggestion it will take you via Kennington, I think, which is probably about the same ish distance but goes over the hill (which you may or may not want!) and along busier streets but using the CS7 (I think). Edited to add more info Hope that helps! Ladygooner Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Does anyone have a good route for cycling to > Oxford Circus from East Dulwich?
  25. Just got a bike from Edwardes in Camberwell, very good service http://www.edwardescycles.com/. They have a range of bikes there and can advise and order in exact sizes etc. There is also Balfes Bikes http://www.balfesbikes.co.uk/ on East Dulwich Road, who have always been very good on repairs etc though I haven't bought anything major from them. I think they have less stock in but can order stuff. When I lived in Peckham I always used Wilson's and they were good too http://www.wilsonscycles.com/, but again only used them for services and repairs, not to buy. On the other hand if you just want something cheap keep an eye on the For Sale section here on the forum, lots of second hand bikes pop up on that. jammyaileen Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > now that the whole of the city is 20 miles per > hour I am thinking of changing from moped to bike, > where is the best bike shop around ED to buy a > bike and not one that isn't too expensive or heavy > (having tried the Boris Bikes they weigh a ton) > ladies raleigh will do...
