  1. Many thanks! That's great to hear. I'll send you both PMs.
  2. Hello, we're thinking about Sydenham School for our daughter (the state secondary school on Dartmouth Road). Was wondering if there are any current parents on here who might spare the time for a quick chat with me about it? I went to the Open Day last year, and will go again this year, but it would be great to get the perspective of a current parent, if possible! Many thanks!
  3. We have a collapsible plastic one we use for camping if that's of any interest. Not as nice looking as the one you posted, but functional! similar to this http://www.thefamilytentshop.com/PRD_ProductDetail.aspx?prodid=178&gclid=Cj0KEQjwyum6BRDQ-9jU4PSVxf8BEiQAu1AHqmj5Y_drwW3rG4XaQ0tOXPIgP2L1L2dzGaQ0njeGBKIaAi8H8P8HAQ
  4. If you swim regularly at a local public pool, and are female, please PM me. Sorry to be cryptic, but would prefer to discuss via PMs.

  6. Hello, anyone got an update on this one? Want to avoid a repeat performance of yesterday? had to abandon the car and walk home! Not seeing it on tfl travel twitter. Anyone got any links? I think it was a road closure on Crystal Palace Park Road (next to Crystal Palace Park) because of gas works. Just hoping they're finished now?.
  7. Thank you kind people! Have had a few very kind offers now, thanks so much, so hopefully sorted! Thanks again forum! Claire
  8. Hi forumites, please help! Boiler went last night, awaiting gas engineer today but looks like we might be without heat etc for another day or two. We have cold children! Any kind person got a plug-in heater I could borrow for a day or two? Will gladly repay in wine and/or chocolate! Thanks v much Claire
  9. Thanks folks for your replies and PMs. It sounds like it's been fantastic for some people, so it's certainly worth investigating! Thanks a lot for the replies. Sorry for being a bit late coming back to this - Xmas etc got in the way! Claire
  10. Hi, Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the "Southwark Music Centre" - we got letters about it at our primary school. I think it is this place http://www.southwarkmusicservice.org.uk So it looks like a great opportunity, my only problem is that it sounds like the kids have to commit to singing in one of the choirs for a year, every Saturday morning from 9.30-12 or something like that? and if they "demonstrate commitment" by showing up every Saturday for a year, THEN they might be offered instrumental music tuition. My 6yo son is musical and I suspect he'd benefit from this group, but I just wondered if anyone else has done this, and if they could tell me if it's really worth all the effort?? Saturday mornings are prime time for all sorts of other activities, so I'm a little reluctant to commit his and our time for a whole year?. but if it's an awesome group, then maybe it's totally worth it, who knows?! They have to have an assessment first before they're invited to participate, so that might make the decision for us, but just wanted to ask for opinions at this stage too. thanks all Claire
  11. Hello, Apologies if this is a dumb question ? but I was just wondering whether secondary schools here use textbooks? Not to stir up controversy but just to ask, since I'm not from the UK: is it the case that state secondaries don't require the students to buy textbooks to use throughout the academic year, but that private schools do? Not trying to stir up any arguments re state/private, just trying to ascertain the facts? many thanks
  12. Hi, I'm thinking of taking the kids to the Tate Modern on Friday after school, to avoid the weekend mayhem. Have any of you guys done this? Does it work well? Or is the vibe too grown-up and anti-kid, being an evening? Claire x
  13. Guys, Here's a fun event happening nearby in Sydenham, in celebration of Children's Book Week - a world record attempt that kids can join in on! Meet at Kirkdale Bookshop at 11am. http://www.sydenhamarts.co.uk/event/words-on-the-street/
  14. We went last summer with our kids aged 7 and 5, took the night train from Paris, was great fun! Mostly in Bavaria staying with German friends, briefly in Austria to gawk at the Alps. It's not really touted as a typical holiday destination but it was fab! People friendly, polite etc. definitely recommend for a family holiday. Enjoy! Claire
  15. We put in solid oak floors in our kitchen/diner and I have to say I love it. Love it!! We did a lot of work on our house, and this is the thing I love the most about all the changes we made. We treated it with a sort of a wax protector thing called "Treatex" and it's been fabulous, really hardwearing and 6 years later, after wear and tear with young kids (and renting out to strangers/tenants), the floor still looks great. We've been living/renting in a place with laminate floors recently and I agree with those who say that real wood "feels" better.
  16. There are fantastic children's judo classes in Sydenham, at the new building on Wells Park Road. They're already quite heavily subscribed, but you could check whether there's any space. The teacher is Sensei Donna. http://www.britishjudo.org.uk/club?club=5070
  17. Hi I'm on Landells Rd, LL end Got a text from Thames Water 9.15am today saying they need to do emergency work, water supply will be affected. They said they would send another update in 3 hours Our water went off around 10am Alice
