Have had a Mini Clubman as family car for a few years now - much better than the standard 2dr. Can really recommend. Lots of boot room. Also incredibly cheap to run, and if you buy via Mini Cherished (i.e. second hand through Mini dealership) you get all servicing thrown in for a given time.

Advice on whitewashing furniture please? (sorted - thank you)

Farrow & Ball eggshell all the way. Last years, and is easily wiped. Personally I'd avoid Annie Sloan; takes a lot of skill and patience to get it right. -
Lively dogs and little kids - Peckham Rye Park
Pocket replied to Coco22's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Good grief. What a miserable, joyless post. 100% of responsible dog owners have their dogs microchipped; it's routine during first vaccination / check-up. With council cuts I really can't see Southwark bothering to DNA test dog faeces. The long and short of it is for people to control their animals. The majority do, but as with all things in life there is an idiot minority who don't. Less of the bitter anti-dog militia talk please. rgutsell Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I cannot believe that there are some here who put > the right to have an uncontrolled animal running > free, over and above the right of a parent to have > their youngster playing safely and securely in a > public park. > > Whether the child/parent is acting "logically" or > "rationally" is actually irrelevant. 20mph is absolute bananas. It is simply making the roads even more congested as the flow of traffic is being reduced to an absolute crawl. 30mph was a much more realistic speed limit.

New Conrad Shawcross sculptures arrive

So? from that brilliant list of proposed artworks, this is the winner? Was this the one voted for the majority, or was the decision based on other factors (such as cost)? Personally really disappointed - there were other more exciting and engaging options presented, and it seems the safest (and most bland) concept was picked. All in all rather dull... -
As a resident of one of the affected streets I've contacted Southwark's Public Realm Projects, Parking Design department to request a reconsultation. And I urge anyone else who feels it's time for some fairness to do the same. It's now been two years and the situation has gone beyond breaking point - and it's only going to get significantly worse with the proposed massive Camberwell Art College development on Peckham Road. Currently we have commuters arriving as early as 7am to get a space - the street is horribly congested, traffic has increased seemingly tenfold, and it is absolutely impossible for any tradesperson to visit - let alone ourselves park - within a 5 minute walking radius during the day. We have the same commuters arriving day in and day out - who, we believe, work at Kings, the employment office on Peckham Road, or who use Denmark Hill station. What is required is not a new CPZ zone but an extension of the Lucas Gardens CPZ to cover Shenley Rd and the parallel roads that adjoin Vestry Rd (it really does not warrant an extension to Talfourd or Denman - and residents here are incredibly vocal about how they don't have a problem - so these streets should remain as is, and allow us residents on streets that are affected to be fairly heard and have a CPZ). As one of the posters on here has stated it's not about being able to park outside your own home (all but a pipe dream) - but to have the opportunity to park and lead one's daily life at least within a decent walking vicinity. It's also about reducing the traffic, noise, pollution and making our street a pleasant place. At the moment we only have the weekends where we can do, or have, any of that.

Watch-out. Someone going through recycling bins.
Pocket posted a topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Just wanted to give a watch-out. Someone has been going through our recycling bin on a regular basis over the past fortnight (during the night) - pretty methodically taking stuff out and sifting through. There could be lots of reasons; identity theft being one of them of course. This weekend we found this person/s had also defecated in our front garden as well. We're just off Lyndhurst Grove. The local police community group has been notified. If anyone else has had an issue with this please do report it. And take care to shred anything personal etc before throwing it in the recycling bin. -
Hello there I have the following Villa school uniform going free: * 4 Summer dresses - age 6/7 (but would very certainly fit Reception age child) * 1 5-6 Summer Dress * 1 grey winter skirt (never worn) * 3 unisex winter shirts (one in lovely old style check, two in new style - both acceptable school regulation) Please send me a PM if you'd like to collect (from SE5 - 2 minutes from school itself, off Lyndhurst Grove).

I have just discovered the amazing Southwark Recycling centre on Devon Street, SE15 (off Old Kent Road): can recycle all manner of things, from clothes, to plastics (such as plant pots), to books and CDs. If you can drive over (you just drive straight in to the centre and drop off) I'd definitely recommend it.

We do the journey down to Exeter regularly. Always, always M4 to Bristol then straight down the M5. Wouldn't dream of going down the A303 (unless you like getting stuck behind a tractor, or crawling past Stonehenge).

where do Villa schoolchildren go when they leave?
Pocket replied to oimissus's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I'd be wary of reading too much into the list that details how many children go to which school. Yr 2 children usually take exams for approximately four schools, many get multiple offers - including 'making it' into the 'big independents'. Where the child eventually goes is more often than not down to parents' preference, finances, and suitability of school to child. -
stingray Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > That looks brilliant. Can't wait for ROA at the > Victoria Inn. Please NO. I'm not going to argue artistic merit here, but rather the subject of location... The Victoria Inn is a beautiful building constructed from lovely London stock brickwork. Personally gutted at the sight of the Paxton in Gypsy Hill (how was that ever allowed?). Surely buildings in a conservation area (I'm talking about the Victoria on Bellenden) need to get permission and public support (i.e. seeing the 'artwork' that is planned before it goes up) before this goes ahead?

The ED mother is a very lucky woman. Not many of us in 2013 have the choice to stay at home and look after our children. We are not living in the same era that our parent's did. Costs for everything are astronomical, forcing mothers to go out to work simply to make ends meet. I am going to stick my neck on the line here, and I know that I will get shot down for saying this, but staying at home to look after your children these days is a luxury only the few privileged can afford, sadly. Would love to do it but I don't have a partner who earns enough to cover all our outgoings single-handed. Therefore any tax-break to help us balance work and childcare economically is a godsend.

Oh - lordy this thread has made me SMILE. I went out with one of the Long Acre Flip sales 'boys' back in 1988 for a very short time, when I was a London University student. He was called Ben, and he was absolutely drop dead gorgeous (spit of David Gandy). All very loose cut, worn Levis' 501s brought in tight at the waist with a belt. Ha!

'Stenders'. Isn't that colloquial for 'Eastenders'? Not sure about the packaging: too many ambiguous statements ('Gardener of Feelings' and 'Feel the Northern Treasure'...??!), and typography that doesn't have much shelf presence (anything with an exclamation mark is trying a little too hard). It's a really competitive market out there - so make sure those products have a strong, clear brand message, personality and USP.

Don't get me wrong, I love a dolls' head and torso collection as much as the next person, but I've always thought life's too short to mosaic. -
East Dulwich North? Character Area for the PNAAP
Pocket replied to Eileen's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Agree with genie. There's a pungent whiff of snobbery going on here. Reading between the lines, guessing the whole underlying reason certain people on here don't want to live in an area called 'Peckham South' is that 'East Dulwich' for them means a nice, warm, fuzzy halo effect on the price of their property and their middle class aspiration. -

How did you find out? I'm intrigued. We're registered for both email / text response - yet haven't heard a thing... -
I find this thread utterly unbelievable (on a number of levels). It's just spiteful and needless. To reassure anyone who doesn't smell a big 'rat' in the original post: I am a mother with two children at The Villa. The nursery is outstanding in every way - and it would not be so without good management. I have never had a problem with the manager - if anything she has been incredibly good at organising a busy nursery, as well as being nurturing to the children who attend (I have various personal stories that could attest to both her kindness and professionalism). Dulwich Mum if you have an axe to grind - which as someone has said, is odd seeing as though you've only 'looked around' the Villa, I suggest you take up your issue with the manager of the Villa herself, or the proprietor. And for anyone who is thinking of sending their children to the nursery - honestly - you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Every day I pick up happy, confident children who have spent their day having fun, being engaged and creative. What more could a parent ask for? In the years that my children have been there I could not give you a single instance where I thought money was important than our child's welfare or nursery education. Edited to add: the bit about the 'rat'.

Honestly. Who cares? People aren't like you, or me (each of us will probably shout 'Hallelujah' on that score): people have different viewpoints and different ways of handling events. Maybe just spend a little bit of time away from the Forum, enjoy and accept the madness of life around us, and chill out a bit, eh? Am off to practice what I preach; so thankfully won't be around to read everyone's foaming at the mouth replies.
