No it's not. House prices in ed are way higher than surrounding areas, and there is a lot of snobbery. To say otherwise is sure denial. It's a good place though.

Have to add though, that I think that article is doing a bit of scare mongering, and sensationalism.

To be fair, I very much doubt that she meant it in that way. She didn't choose her words very well, but I just read it as saying that you don't expect a healthy young woman to die in childbirth in this day and age. Basically all boils down to a lack of funding. The RCM says they need 4500 more midwives, and David Cameron promised 3000. So, even if he had delivered on his promise (which he hasn't), he would still only be delivering 2 thirds of what is required, which kind of shows where this is on his list of priorities.

Spending cuts affecting kids' services or any others?
Otta replied to emc's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Crecent, agreed. We used all the groups you mention, and it's a bloody shame they're gone, and lots of the ladies running them are now jobless. -
Post removed, because I hadn't read the op properly.

Spending cuts affecting kids' services or any others?
Otta replied to emc's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I was due to start work with a 16 year old, registered blind girl, in an East End LA. She needs mobility training so that she can get a guide dog. Yesterday I was told by her 6th form college, that VI provision was under review due to cuts, and it was unlikely that there would be funds for mobility training. This will make a big difference in this girl's life, at least in the short term (couple of years). -
Successful appeals at Kingsdale School
Otta replied to Worrywart's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Surely the panel will wonder why on earth you put down any school that wouldn't be appropriate for your child. And if the school he's been offered isn't inappropriate, then I'd imagine they'll say you have no case, as you chose it. Not trying to be nasty, but dont like your chances. -
Dulwich Hamlets Football Club licence review
Otta replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I hold my hands up James, I didn't read all 84 pages no. I did however have a look at the highlights. Yes getting CCTV, and having the right number of staff would be a good thing. But I do not accept that the club did anything that in some way led to what happened on that night. Otherwise, why hasn't it happened regularly? Anyway, whether I think it's a bit of a heavyhanded decision is inconsequential, as it's been made. Good luck to the club. -
Dulwich Hamlets Football Club licence review
Otta replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yeah right. I suspect the kids would have gone home quietly, without using the knives and guns they'd brought with them, had the club acted differently. What a total nonsense. And for the record, I have nothing to do with the club. -
This is all rather scary. Basically, the Dulwich area has become so full of families, that this is likely to get worse and worse. The area could do with a new primary, and secondary school. When it comes to secondary, I am all for kids getting the bus to school, and going to other boroughs. But with primary, it really should be somewhere that can walked to in 10-15 minutes. If I lived near the bottom of Lordship Lane, I really wouldn't fancy the walk to Hornimans or Fairlawn every morning. Both of which are Lewisham schools anyway.

Vote for local park to receive a ?15k make over!!!
Otta replied to kemurf's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We live close this park, and it's beautiful. I shall vote, and send the link to some others. -
We had good intentions, and tried with cloth, but frankly, there was enough shit to deal with, without making things more difficult. I know, bad people.

To all of you hard working ladies!

Quite. That is why I just said it worried me, rather than going off on one about it, when I could have gotten the wrong end of the stick. It just stuck out a bit to me.

Soory, I'd missed your question. It worries me, because it's not going to do much for the self esteem of those kids who are told that basically everyone around them is better than them. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against all competition, and awarding achievement. I'm also not against encouraging improvement, where it's needed. But the wording of that sounds somewhat more sinister to me.

I'm skiving off this morning, and just watched "The Wright Stuff", where they discussed baby reins making a comeback. They quoted someone (I didn't hear the name) as saying something like "it's like putting them on a leash like a dog. You wouldn't let them poo in the street, so why make them wear a leash". Now, my opinion is, that whoever said that, is a total moron, who is kind of missing the point in every way imaginable. We've not used them yet, but will if the need arises. I know the little one probably won't like them that much (I can actually remember hating them when I was very small), but I'd rather that, than have to have her in the buggy all the time, to stop her running in to danger! I don't really think kids should still be in reins, aged 4, but by that stage, they can have an understanding of danger. Until that understanding is there, then surely it's better to lay it safe. So, do I think my child is a dog, should I start putting her food in a bowl, and buy her a basket to sleep in?

My wife found the TENS machine a life saver (Gas & Air didn't really do it for her). Hope it works out for you, best of luck! :)

This worries me.

Have you tried this? Although I'd be tempted to just buy it outright, as the hire prices seem pretty high. Mothercare also seem to do them.

Not that soon no. End of July, so we're just over half way. -
Would yr husband/partner take 6 mth pat leave?
Otta replied to emc's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I'd love to take at least a portion of it when our second arrives, but financially, there's no chance. -
I imagine kids will find it all rather interesting.

Bullying happens at all schools, including the very "best" ones... In fact, it probably happens in a nastier way at the "best" schools.

Second child ponderings, AKA the longest post ever.
Otta replied to Ruth_Baldock's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Ruth, we can sort of reason with her about some things. But it's going to be big upheaval for her, as she still co-sleeps, and breastfeeds (although she is losing interest a bit, which is good).
