Dulwich is crying out for a Hotel of some sort and if it is any good it will have high occupancy I would have thought. We didn't have our wedding in Dulwich as there was nowhere for people from out of town to stay. The East Dulwich "Hotel" probably not the sort of place to put the in-laws (or then again.....???).

Virgin - using one cable for more than one residence
SteveUK1978 replied to TreacleRabbit's topic in The Lounge
Better is a relative term - we had huge trouble with BT and gave up with them. We have had better service with Vigin. In my experience - so much depends on who answers the phone at the call centre. If it is someone who knows what they are talking about I think you get to an answer so much quicker. -
JL - I was at the Lane as well today and our set pieces were awful as they have been all year. With our wingers and full backs we are always going to win plenty of corners and I cannot remember us posing a threat all season (Kaboul may have had a header earlier in the year?). The number of times they hit the first man and it gets cleared is shocking. Here's hoping for a better performance next Sunday.

The main benefit of the machines Sue is that you don't have to bag up your zillions you just chuck them in and it sorts it all out. 7% is a bit steep mind you. We have an account with Nat West and they have a similar machine that do it for free in certain branches - just goes straight into your account. My other half takes great satisfaction taking all our change in and getting ?12.58 put into the joint account every now and again.

Good stuff - next Tuesday I will do the same! Means another week of pine needles falling on the carpet I guess....

It is garden waste day near our house today and I noticed a number of trees just left outside the front of people's houses....presume people are hoping they get taken away. Looking on the Southwark website it does say it can be collected with garden waste and doesn't go on about chopping it up into little bags from the library (see below). I will see if they have gone when I get home and if so stick ours out in the street next week for the garden collection. Recycle your real Christmas tree It can be collected with garden waste, taken to one of our special collection points or you can arrange for a free collection by contacting us on 020 7525 2000. The collection points are as follows: ? Reuse and Recyling centre, Devon Street, SE15 1AL (from 4 January 2012) ? Belair Park ? Peckham Rye Park ? Southwark Park

We moved to East Dulwich in February and love it here - as you say Sue, it is just easier for people to let all the good things go un-possted and focus on the negative. Bulglaries, muggings, aircraft noise (!) happen all over London and any major City in the world so I tend to ignore those threads and look for the positive ones.

Have you tried the homemade scotch egg from the lady who sells pies etc from the little cart on a Saturday? I risk life and limb to dodge all the traffic on diversion down my little side road to go and get one quite often. I sir, will not sign your petition.

Subsidence and content insurance in East Dulwich
SteveUK1978 replied to indiej25's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Goosey - very interested in your experience (and that of your neighbours). We moved in earlier in the year and the old owners quite literally had papered over the cracks so only when we redecorated did we discover some quite obvious cracking. We have been monitoring them for some time now and for the most part they are stable although the odd new one appears every now and then...or they may not be new, we just never saw them before. Did your neighbours have a major problem...i.e. was the cracking really obvious, lots of movement / expansion? Ours are not more than hair line cracks in width but they are worrying none the less. We have debated the insurance route but as soon as it is on the radar - as you say - you run into major trouble with your premiums. Any insights gratefully received. S -
space for removal lorry outside house??
SteveUK1978 replied to returnee's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
We called Southwark, got through to someone eventually and you can get some sort of parking suspension notice for moving house. We were told it needs to be in place for 7 days and it is actually not enforceable (i.e. if someone is actually parked there then tough) but figured it was better than nothing. We even got told how much it would cost and sent in a cheque to pay for it - was about ?30 from memory. Nothing ever happened (no notices ever went up) and the cheque never got cashed! On the day I was watching the road like a hawk and positioning our car and various bins to save the space. Luckily it was mid-week so there is usually a bit of space on our street. Good luck! -
Increase in Aircraft Noise
SteveUK1978 replied to david_on_grove's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The number of flights landing at Heathrow (the main culprit for the noise over ED's) has actually dropped significantly since the mid-2000's http://www.baa.com/assets/Internet/BAA%20Airports/Downloads/Static%20files/10yrRecordOfStatistics_2001-2010_BAA.pdf Must be changes in flight paths that is causing the issue. -
Increase in Aircraft Noise
SteveUK1978 replied to david_on_grove's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I used to live in West Hampstead and it was much worse. You would get the night flights heading to Asia / Australia taking off over north London at around 10pm - 11pm. Friends who live in Twickenham get the same planes we do over ED, but by that stage the wheels are down and they are even lower, louder. Sadly it is just a fact of life in London. I certainly don't think it is the fault of "private airlines looking to make money", that's not a very sensible comment I would argue. There is increasing noise (pardon the pun) for a brand new Airpot in the Thames estruary - got to be the answer. -
In years gone by has anyone tried to get back to ED on New Years Eve from Central London after the fireworks by the London Eye? I know the tube runs for free all night but does anyone know if in the past the train companies do the same to ED, Peckham Rye or even Herne Hill. No clues on their website that I could see.

There are so many people hoovering up anything they can, I bet next summer there will be plenty of tickets knocking about when people realise they aren't interested in watching Handball at 9.30am on a Tuesday morning after all. Worth trying www.sportsworld.co.uk. They are official re-seller for the Denmark Olympic organisation and as Denmark is in the EU they have to honour applications from other EU nations. They are not offering any at the moment but from time to time they do release some tickets and I managed to get a morning rowing session and evening athletics through this route. Think they also do packages / tours but they are quite pricey and you need to book a hotel which kind of defeats the point if you live here.

Man Utd after Dulwich Hamlets lad. Amazing!
SteveUK1978 replied to maxpaterson's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
How many promotions are Dulwich Hamlet away from the conference (or whatever it is called these days?). I see from the article they are sitting pretty at the top the league at the moment. I think I will try and pop along to a couple of game if I can this year....bit easier than the trek to White Hart Lane which I make every now and then. -
Right East Dulwich, I need some help. Following another dispute in the car this morning on the way to Furniture Village I need to know what radio station I should be listening to. I am 33 and I think that is a difficult age for radio listening. I am told by my girlfriend that I am too young to be listening to Magic / Heart and the constant loop of Adele and Dido songs on repeat.....but I insist she is too old to be listening to Capital / Radio 1 more favoured by teenagers. So what is the solution.....?

"ED pub may become 20-room hotel"
SteveUK1978 replied to Bony Fido's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The main reason we are not getting married in Dulwich next year is lack of hotel rooms for those coming from out of town / abroad....I think there must be demand for a nice, 4 star "boutique" hotel in the area. Would be a boost for the area I reckon. -
As per the Southern website - update at 1700 Train services into and out of London Bridge station have been severely disrupted throughout the day due to signalling problems caused by cable theft in the area earlier. Network Rail is working hard to replace the cable and most lines have been restored. However, there may be residual problems so you should expect short notice alterations and cancellations and delays until the service returns to normal. Please allow extra time for your journey home tonight. London Buses, London Overground, London Underground, London Tramlink, Southeastern and First Capital Connect are accepting Southern tickets on any reasonable route. We apologise for any inconvenience this will cause.

New to East Dulwich, looking for top tips!

I keep meaning to go in Hope and Greenwood - keep walking past it when it is closed. Thanks for reminding me....I will go this weekend! -
I get very frustrated by the no croquet rules on a Sunday, although I have a confession to make. When the riots were going on last weekend I took the chance to sneak out for a quick game in Dulwich Park while the authorities' attention was elsewhere. Been wracked with guilt ever since some James' post is very re-assuring.

Break in - Oakhurst Grove - 15.8.11
SteveUK1978 replied to Strawbs's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Horrific experience - sorry you had to go through that at any time, let alone when pregnant. How did they get into the back garden? Must have jumped a wall or fence in broad daylight....hopefully someone would have seen something and they can be caught. S -
There were certainly a lot of police in and around there last week when I was out for a run so I would say it is in use still - even if the metal railings have been up around it the whole time I have lived in ED.

Not surprised they are single if they have a large wadge - bit unsightly.

What a nice thread....makes a nice change from riots etc! We moved here at the start of the year and feel like proper locals now. Highlights for me are: Best pub: Bishop. The burger is worth the trip alone. Clock House worth a look, Actress is a nice spot when the sun is shining. Agree that the Mag does a very nice Sunday roast. Restaurant: Have to agree with others, love the Hisar. Just finished a chicken shish for dinner....lovely stuff. Sport: Bit further afield but the Brockwell Lido is a great 50m outdoor pool. Only ?2.70 entry before 10.00am. Dulwich and Peckham Rye parks both nice for a run. They have boot camp style fitness groups too. Not really found a chinese takeaway yet although my girlfriend raves about the Thai Corner Cafe. Enjoy!
