You might not like buying from them, but some people must use them as they make a lot of money. Suspect there is a silent acceptance of their tactics as a seller when it means you get 10% more for your property. Very vocal complaints from buyers when they are getting bent over. Suspect they have a very specific formula for where new places open up - P Rye is hardly a secret any more so I imagine it is part of the calculated master plan.

Does anyone know what the rules are for putting a skip on a road in ED that otherwise has no parking restrictions? I presume there is the requirement for a permit (that probably never gets done), but if done by the book, does any permit state where in the street it can or must be located. A loaded question given what has silently appeared outside our door today.

When I lived in NW London, you could buy a limited number of temporary permits for certain periods of time. Useful for visitors and workmen etc. Worked just fine, nobody complained.

Really interesting - thanks for posting. Turned out the modern, safe, light and airy housing blocks didn't stand the test of time compared the the dirty, dark victorian properties!

I agree that the shops and businesses on LL should be protected. If the status quo means they are struggling, why not implement a change that may encourage more people to access LL during the week? For the streets around LL, you can only park for 4 hours. You can park for free but have to display a ticket on your windscreen which says when you got there. 4 hours is more than long enough for shoppers / lunchers and would stop those using the streets for parking and commuting. Residents exempt with permit at nominal charge. Just an idea.

Let's make it 2-3pm for the restriction then...or is that going to cause a problem for you Penguin as your experience in Spain means that it will interfere with the siesta time? For Clapham, substitute the words "almost any London borough" if that helps keep the debate away from the inevitable.

Similar story to you First Mate - we have to collect our son from daycare and park in the evening. Very rarely park anywhere near the house and that can be quite stressful when you have an increasingly angry little passenger. Never had to drive around for half an hour I must admit though. I would be seriously hacked off if that was a regular occurrence. If there was a restriction for a period of time in the day for which residents were exempt I don't see how that would cause a major headache? Would stop those using the streets for commuting. Residents only parking all day could be argued as damaging for shops on LL - agree with that, so why not a middle ground? Other option is pay and display for non-resident pass holders (they do this in Clapham) for the time you want to park.

Penguin68 - I live on Crawthew Grove and there is no doubt that the parking on the street is made worse by commuters. Saturday morning aside (peak LL shopping, NCR market time) it is easy to park on the street and outside the house on weekends. It is impossible to park during the week till about 7pm-ish when it starts to clear. I am sure that is down to station users not local teachers or office workers who would have gone home by then. I would certainly support the 2 hour restriction during the week. I don't think we need to go to full resident permits like the rest of London but the limited restriction is surely happy middle ground.

If you are going long haul, just don't do it to yourself by taking suitcases on any form of public transport. The early taxi right to the terminal door is worth the cost. You can have a snooze in the cab and enjoy some breakfast at Heathrow. Have a great trip.

It's ok, the tanking oil price makes shale gas uneconomic now so the larg scale project I had slated for my back patio is currently mothballed.

Does anyone know how easy (or otherwise) it is to get on the Victoria Line from Victoria in the mornings? Is the train packed and hard to get on like the Jub Line. If ED / LB is becoming impossible, I may try that as an alternative route from Denmark Hill.

Trains from ED were fine this morning for the 8.10am, shows they can work at least! Arrived "on time" 16 mins later. The Jubilee Line was noticeably busier going Westbound. Had to let 3 trains go before got on one - that only normally happens when there are delays or a big gap between trains which wasn't the case as they were coming through every 1-2 mins. When I got on, it was packed behind me as well so that, I guess, is the new normal.

Something to look forward to next week as well. I think the through services to Charing Cross stop from next week so those people trying to get to the West End are likely to get on the Jubilee Line instead. From an email from TFL today.... Some Tube and London Overground stations including London Bridge Tube station may be exceptionally busy, especially during peak hours. Jubilee line stations between London Bridge and Waterloo and London Overground stations between Sydenham and Canada Water will also be busier than usual. This is while National Rail customers take alternative routes

Oddly given the horrendous weather this morning (surely an excuse in waiting) the commute was quite good on the 8.10am. Only sat at South B for 3 mins or so. I guess it can work where everything runs to plan. The problem seems to be as soon as there is a small issue anywhere in the LBG areas there is no margin for error and the whole timetable falls apart.

LBG chaos proudly on the front page of the Evening Standard tonight...and rightly so, it was chaos again tonight. Really does feel like too many people waiting in too small a space with the changes they have made. Not good.

That's probably how long it was actually taking with the now standard wait outside LBG. I guess it helps them say more of the trains are "on time". Be interesting to see what awaits us after all the works over Xmas.

I suspect some people will read this and think what on earth are these people on about...but it is really annoying. I only went to the pool at ED once and the chatting breaststrokers drifting up the fast lane and social club congregating at the end of the lane was enough to see me never go back (plus it must have been 30C in there too!). Brockwell Lido for a serious(ly cold) swim round here.

If you are feeling flush, the restaurant at Fortnum & Mason is very nice for breakfast and offers plenty of chances to spend any money you have left on festive goodies afterwards.

How a project of this scale on such a small, hard to access plot was ever approved is a disgrace. It's closing in on 2 years now and with another winter coming surely more delays are inevitable. The cost must be enormous which in itself is a worry, if another contractor is bailing out then how is it ever going to complete? Let us know if you hear from the council, will happily add support to any follow up.

?130k salary for someone running a ?9m t/o (charitable) business is high. Tollgate revenue is up this year though...

Could not diaagree more with cle. Mon Petit Chou is destination of choice for a cooked breakfast for me. Staff are excellent too.

I'd give William Rose another go if I were you - exceptional service from my experience. On EDD - they were pretty grumpy in there though. Very shoddy queueing system too which was very open to pusher-inners.

The last incarnation of the project (amazingly) didn't have the correct permissions till quite late on - but they did get them in the end. This time round they do seem a bit more organised - and so far, some sense has prevailed in that the big obstruction is on the other side of the road not making the corner not quite so blind for traffic. Not much fun for those houses right by the blue metal thing - must make for quite dark evenings in the shadow of that thing.
