You may have noticed the street art that has popped up in the area in the last couple of years. There have been lots of discussion of them here. The walls are organised by Dulwich Outdoor Gallery https://www.facebook.com/DulwichOutdoorGallery?ref=hl and the subject matter always relates in some way to paintings in Dulwich Picture Gallery. The next exhibition at DPG is works by Escher http://www.dulwichpicturegallery.org.uk/whats-on/exhibitions/2015/october/the-amazing-world-of-m-c-escher/ and Phlegm has agreed to paint a wall relating to this. I (DOG) just need a wall! The more prominent it is the better. Phlegm is massively respected in the street art world and has already painted one Dulwich wall, a man playing a circular trumpet on the corner of Barry Road and Goodrich Road. Please private message me if you are interested or want more info. Thanks so much.

Street Art in East Dulwich update - more happening on Sunday

An update on the East Dulwich street art, part of Dulwich Outdoor Gallery https://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/exhibit/dulwich-outdoor-gallery-tour/QQiKMDYR . The Plough wall that used to have the bee, but has been blank for some months, is going to be painted from Sunday by Mad C http://madc.tv/ , a German girl. It will be based on 'Venetia, Lady Digby' by van Dyck. It will be mainly abstract using the colours and form of the original, with one figurative object which is the crux of the story behind the portrait. Also Pablo Delgado will be around on Sunday putting up more paste ups along Lordship Lane. Both have/will have solo shows in central London. Pablo's is on now at the Howard Griffin Gallery in Shoreditch High Street http://howardgriffingallery.com/exhibitions/opens-tomorrow-morning/ and Mad C's at Pure Evil Gallery at 108 Leonard St, London EC2 http://www.pureevilclothing.com/ starting on Oct 1st.

That particular wall has been in a very bad state for a long time. The owners think it was from when the house next to it (which is now a carpark) was bombed in the last war and an internal wall became an exterior. The street artists in this project mainly use exterior masonry paint which actually protects the wall.

A female street artist is going to paint the wall where the bee was from 20 September for about 3 days. She is MadC, and the wall owners love what she proposes to do. It is based on another painting in Dulwich Picture Gallery. Lets hope people love it. I think they will!

Yes, I know what is happening to that fly/bee. The owners are really sad to have to paint over it, but the wall was very damp and they had to have it treated, and that process damaged the painting so much it had to go. But they really would like another artwork there, so Im thinking about who to ask. Its quite a scary community responsibility to find someone whose work is universally liked and who the wall owner likes. What do you think of DalEast? http://www.daleast.com/outdoor/ He has incredible movement and is really skilled. The bee went up in May 2013 as part of the Baroque the Streets festival which was part of the Dulwich Festival. There is another that is nearly complete now - the Iranian artist Mehdi Ghadyanloo http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2015/feb/26/mehdi-ghadyanloo-tehran-iran-street-art-banksy is putting the finishing touches to it tomorrow. Its on 15 Kinsale Road, SW15 and is a complete marvel. It is a fanciful building with steps and some figures. The perspective is so carefully done (he used an architectural design programme) so there is a particular spot on the pavement opposite that it should be viewed from for the perspective lines to join. Once the scaffolding comes down it will be a jaw dropper.

Someone, not Pablo Delgado (he is in Mexico) has made similar paste-ups and stuck them back on where the originals were painted over! They have missed out the picture at the top of the composition but have replaced the three pieces that cast shadows on the pavement. They are a bit smaller than the originals but are still Princess Victoria x2 and a weird copper bowl. see attached photo. Fantastic! Thank you whoever you are!

Yes, that was me taking another street art tour. It is incredible how the interest in the street art in Dulwich has spread. This was an Anglo-Japanese Friendship Group who wanted a street art tour ending in Dulwich Picture Gallery to see the paintings on which the street art is based. They loved it!

Ive been there and added some more magnolia...
-
I have tried to clean off graffiti using a variety of substances, with no success. I now paint over the tag with the colour which it is on. The Phlegm background colour is Magnolia, in case anyone has any spare and can get there before me.

Back to the street art on the side of the Patch, the original purpose of this thread. If you would like to meet one of the people who organised the street art around Dulwich - me - Im giving a talk/showing a short film/brokering a discussion tomorrow evening (Wed 14th) at 7.30 upstairs at the EDT. Its part of the Dulwich Festival http://www.dulwichfestival.co.uk/event/dulwich-street-art-inside-story I can explain why the stars and stripes, let you know what the artist, Mear One, is like, and debate the inevitable issues associated with street art. Im dying to meet some of the people behind these EDF names!

If anyone is interested, Im leading a street art/fine art walk tomorrow from 1pm, meeting opposite East Dulwich Station under the Girl at a Window, Vale End. It goes up Lordship Lane, down Court Lane, through my house for a loo and drink stop, through Dulwich Park and into Dulwich Picture Gallery to see the originals that inspired the walls. Finishes at about 4/4.30. Just turn up. Its ?15 which includes entrance to Dulwich Picture Gallery, drinks etc. http://dulwichonview.org.uk/2013/08/06/dulwich-street-art-walks-reviewed/

Yes, as the photo shows, he can do it on brick. That one is in a sorry state now, the top part eaten by snails sliding down from the bushes above I think. They like the taste of the glue! I will ask him to renew that one too.

It is sad that three paste-ups by Pablo Delgado have been removed. The owner of the wall on Oglander Road gave permission, and loved the piece. I dont know about the ones on Colwell Road. I think Pablo just put them up there. But if you look carefully, the shadows of the paper people/animals, which were painted on the pavement, are still there. A tiny trace has been left behind! I take lots of school children around the street works and they particularly love the little pictures by Pablo on the walls and by Ben Wilson on bits of chewing gum on the pavements. However Pablo has just come back to London where he is having a show, and has said he will return to Dulwich to replace any that we want replaced. He will do this in early May. So if anyone would like one of his witty little narratives on their outside wall, let me know.

the Stik on the side of Mrs Robinson - STOLEN
IngridB replied to IngridB's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
easytiger Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Hi Ingrid, > > Do the building owners in the area get paid for > these murals on their properties? Do any need > permission from the council? No, neither the artist nor the building owners get paid, all this is free public spirited stuff. The wall owners often pay the artists' expenses - paint, hire of scaffolding etc. 3 pubs gave them food while they were painting. The pubs, cafes etc have noticed a lot of increased business as people come from all over the place to see the murals and buy in Dulwich. Its win win. (unless you dont like the murals). And no, you dont need permission for wall paintings, but you do for the mushrooms (on top of Mrs Robinson and Franklins Farm Shop). Im struggling with the council now to get retrospective planning permission, as I hadn't realised you needed it and they are threatening to take them down. -
the Stik on the side of Mrs Robinson - STOLEN
IngridB replied to IngridB's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It is definitely not an inside job, I know. If you remember what the painting looked like recently, the stik people had wobbly legs. Not Stik's style at all. In May that piece was tagged and as Stik was too busy to come and mend it, and not wanting the tag to be there where it might attract more tags, I touched it up myself. Really badly. So the bottom half is by a middle aged woman who has never held a spray can before in her life! Shades of that old woman in N. Italy touching up a 15th century fresco thought to be by Leonardo! Poor thief! -
Someone has prised out the painting by Stik on the side of Mrs Robinson in Blackwater Street last night. Hoping to make a killing I suppose. Attached is what it looks like in case anyone sees it in the auction rooms! and a photo of the empty space.

This is a great discussion! I have been interviewed by the Observer and led to believe that there will be a half page article about the Dulwich Street Art in the Arts and Culture section of New Review tomorrow. And there was a bit in the Huffington Post http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/ben-j-cotton/street-art-on-the-streets-18-august_b_3776390.html about the most recent Dulwich Outdoor Gallery wall on the Florence in Herne Hill. So along with the mention in Time Out its been a good week.

Film about how the Dulwich street art came about
IngridB replied to IngridB's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thank you for your lovely comments! There is going to be an article about the whole project in this Sunday's Observer, Arts and Culture section. And this Sunday's walk is in Time Out, http://www.timeout.com/london/art/dulwich-street-art-festival-tours?intcid=leader so the numbers will be huge. I suggest that if you are around on 22 or 29 Sept, they would be better bets. If you want to keep up with what is going on you could like Dulwich Outdoor Gallery Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/DulwichOutdoorGallery?ref=hl which I try to keep up. RUN is painting a wall tomorrow in Forest Hill next to the Sylvian Post pub on Dartmouth Road. Its based on St Rita by Poussin! http://www.dulwichpicturegallery.org.uk/collection/search_the_collection/artwork_detail.aspx?cid=191 -

All info on this thread http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?6,1139567 Nice review of the walks here: http://dulwichonview.org.uk/2013/08/06/dulwich-street-art-walks-reviewed/ -
Ive been asked to put together a book on this project and wondered if I could use some quotes from this thread. Im keen to show all opinions, so wont only chose the nice ones! Rather than ask you all individually, could you message me if you DONT want me to use your words. That doesnt mean that I will, but that I have the option to. Thanks!

Just found this thread. I imagine its like looking (or not) at reviews of a play you have been in. Scary to see what people think. There has been a lot written about the recent street art in Dulwich which I co-organised. As someone said earlier in this thread, there is an 18 minute film made about it that explains all. This is a particularly interesting angle http://inspiringcity.com/2013/06/30/art-on-dulwich-streets-meets-art-in-the-dulwich-picture-gallery/ Im completely aware that this art, like all public art and architecture has been imposed on the public. Just like advertising boards and the recent Art Everywhere that has massive bad quality reproductions of British art all over the place http://arteverywhere.org.uk/artworks/ Possibly The Haywain is up somewhere! The Dulwich art is painted by the artists and on walls that were just dirty 'white'. (all except the rat/weasel/dog on the Victoria). That one has been the most controversial. Its by the very famous Roa who went on to do similar things on the Southbank. The bee/spider/fly was painted by Nunca, also an incredibly famous street artist. He is from Brazil and was one of the 6 artists invited by Tate Modern to paint its building in a street art exhibition in 2008. However he wouldn't have anything to do with Dulwich Picture Gallery and painted a queen bee (sitting on a throne) with her hive next to her. Its about hierarchy in society, the workers and the rulers, and I think the cups of tea in her hands refers to British colonialism and the profit that was made out of tea on the backs of the workers. (something might have been lost in translation here). The wall belongs to a mental health charity who was delighted to have it on their otherwise dreary empty wall. I would think the value of that house has rocketed since the mural.
