  1. I can't see why we can't live in an "international" city and aspire to have less air pollution. Other international cities seem to manage it. It shouldn't be a question of well if you want to use planes then you have to put up with being woken up at 4.30am. There are a number of long term solutions e.g. the thames estuary plan and I'm sure that there are a number of short term solutions such as less reliance on Heathrow and varying routing etc. I don't see this as NIMBYISM as it is a london problem
  2. Why can't we have cheap flights that don't fly over heavily populated areas?
  3. But isn't the expansion to cope with (and also to make Heathrow more attractive to ) International transit travellers which makes more money for BAA et al. I'm sure that if it was just people going on holiday it wouldn't be quite so bad. Obviously, there is a downside to (i) being an international city and (ii) being able to travel abroad but that doesn't necessarily mean that we shouldn't give a rat's a*se about the consequences of this. For example, flight paths should avoid (where possible) densely populated areas which includes rich and poorer areas. This isn't NIMBYISM its about making sure that the quality of life of londoners isn't slowly eroded further. It's important that the interest of londoners be taken into account when considering the heathrow expansion
  4. Thanks for the post I think the noise is worse than SW london although it may be worse cause I'm on top of a hill. I think you get used to it but its still v loud and seems to go on all day (save for about 4 hours in the night). People who stay really notice the noise. I can't believe it is going to get worse.
  5. There is something at the end: "A proposed ? but not so far approved ? spur from near Surrey Quays on to an existing route in south London would take East London trains to Clapham Junction, in south-west London, and complete a ring of such routes around the capital." Not good news though
  6. Isn't this project still unfunded? The chances of the funding being raised and line extended by 2010 seem v slim. Sounds like newspaper talk; there is nothing about this on any of the official websites
  7. Katherine Down adminsters the keys. I think the address is 110 Grove Park
  8. Since when has Footie been a middle class badge of honour??
  9. So is this place good for Footie? Are they switching the sound on now?? I'm keen to watch the might spurs continue their rapid rise up the table.....
  10. Looking at the tube map it always amazes what a rubbish deal south london gets in terms of tube links. Why is that? Also, I know I've posted on this before but Southwark is looking for support with the current ELL to peckham rye and denmark hill (presumably because we are going to lose this aswell) so check out the website http://www.southwark.gov.uk/YourServices/transport/ELLX.html and register your support
  11. It has a nandos though
  12. Its supposed to be although it might have moved to peckham by then
  13. That's better. Now we can all go and support Hoopers in East Dulwich with their party on Sunday
  14. I do live in camberwell and I'm not sure why you think I'd be bothered by that. As someone said earlier on this thread, people often illustrate where they live by their closest station. It's where I tell cabbies. Seriously, harrasing people about postcodes isn't going to make camberwell a more attractive place to live for you. You really do have a big chip on your shoulder about Camberwell. You should try and relax a bit more
  15. You've lost me?
  16. I'm not sure its always tongue in cheek I'm happy at living in se5, it gives me that urban edginess I lost with fatherhood. Seriously, camberwell is a big place. Nothing wrong with saying I live in denmark hill.
  17. Alan Why do you refer to where you live as "selbourne village"?
  18. I say I live in denmark hill rather than camberwell as it gives a clearer indication of where I live. Its not cause I'm embarrased of my postcode. Similarly, if I lived nr Hoopers or the ED end of Bellenden Rd, I would say I lived in ED rather than peckham or camberwell. That's just less confusing for friends cabbies. As someone said, postcodes perform an administrative function. They don't necesarily give an accurate picture of where someone lives
  19. They are obviously trying to drum up business. They've been sending out flyers and maybe he's trying to be a bit different from the generic gastro-pub. It does have a nice "local" pub feel but the location is not exactly great. It is closed an awful lot. People / businesses on borders often refer to themselves as in a different area from their postcode. Sometimes that is less confusing. In the case of hoopers, if I didn't know different I would have thought it was ED. Whenever I go in The Grove and Dark Horse and other gastro-pubs in camberwell, they are hardly ever busy either. Not sure why that is but I worry about all of them staying around long term
  20. Its people / residents who start regeneration Initially, regeneration is caused by a decent and affordable housing stock plus good transport links. People look for more affordable options when they get priced out of more "established" and expensive areas. Estate agents don't generally tend to encourage people to move to a new area; people tend to seek them out. Shops and pubs change as a result of the new residents. Makeovers and places like william rose encourage and accelerate a process that has already started So lets thank the pioneers who first settled in ED. Any of them still left??
  21. I can't see what all the fuss is about. It provides a valuable and much needed service to the local community. The coffee is slightly bitter - just how it should be. The food is pretty awful though so I'd be happy if the council stopped them selling that... It is important that the right conditions are set for independents to thrive and for LL to retain its character but I can't see how going to the time and expense of seeking to close down CN achieves that. Give em a fine / slap their wrists (for what could be an honest mistake) and lets move on
  22. I think it's still proposed but is currently unfunded. There is a section on southwark's website where you can register your support for the project. See here http://www.southwark.gov.uk/YourServices/transport/ELLX.html With the Olympics, crossrail etc I wouldn't be surprised if it never happens
  23. I think Peter wasn't able to control his powers (as he was absorbing too much) so wasn't also able to fly Series 2 has just finished in the US but is only 12 epidsodes long (due the writers strike)
  24. Decent boozer but always quiet when I've been. I'd be interested to know what the quiz is like.
  25. I got married at Eltham Palace. Its an amazing venue and the staff were fab
