Southwark consultation on Peckham gyratory
wolis replied to Marguerita98's topic in Roads & Transport
Planners always seem to forget that people who have to drive for work etc. will find a way round these obstacles. I drove in and around Central London from the early 70s until a few years ago. I was a specialist carpenter needing a van. I knew all the rat runs and when slowly they got cut off in the early 2000's I found alternatives. The idea that blocking off one way would make me give up driving or working was ridiculous.Traffic is like water - it will find a way . -
London Reclaim and Salvage in Nunhead have always been worth going to.

Has anybody tried to book a blood test. I've registered and followed the link to book a test but can get no further than entering the name of Kings College Hospital. The support page is useless. Any tips from someone who has been able to make a booking. Just got it. There is a black 'button' on the right side of my screen that was hardly showing. The support page was unhelpful. A great friend of mine who is elderly and has no computer or smartphone would be completely unable to get a booking. The old system was so easy. This is somebody making money from the NHS

Both our dogs hated Frontline and would cringe at the sight of the packet so we switched to a garlic spray. Worked well and they rarely had fleas. We bought it in a pet shop in Walworth Rd, now long gone. I think you can make your own and use a small gaden spray.

Sad to see the last of this shop. We have used it several times over the years. Miss the cat as well. Where will people who don't have washing machines now go?

Dead fox in my garden- how do I dispose of it safely

Some years ago I found a large fox dead in the street on a late night dog walk. I rang the council and they came and took it away. -
Extinction Rebellion to camp on Peckham Rye park for 2 weeks
wolis replied to MrsR's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
In the past few years my wife and I have been on quite a few marches - anti war, anti brexit , pro NHS etc. All were done with many thousands of fellow marchers and all done in good spirits. We booed outside Downing St. to protest against Bush on his London visit and cheered when a Brexit vote went against the goverment while were in Parliament Square. Did any of these marches have the slighest effect on the powers to be. NO. Britain still invaded Iraq, and Afganistan and left the EU and what mistakes they have turned out to be. If only Tony, George or Boris had asked us two for advice! Extinction Rebellion want to bring London to a standstill, something the IRA failed to do during their campaigns or indeed, the Luftwaffe. I've no doubt a lot have genuine and worthwhile intentions and in many ways we support them, but I think they would have more effect if they blocked Westminster, for example, and prevented the people in power from going about their daily work, but causing a few local traffic problems annoys a small number of people and wastes police time. But any lasting effect - NO. -
Grove Vale Library (E Dulwich Stn) Poor Service?
wolis replied to Brideshead's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
On the same subject but a lighter note. I was an Assistant Librarian in the 60s for Lambeth Libraries. I worked at the Tate Central Lbrary in Brixton. The reading room with papers and magazines was next door to the main building - now part of the Ritzy Cinama. Not a place for the faint hearted. Later I worked at The Tate, South Lambeth. The reading area was in the middle of the large single room and we always had a few old chaps sitting or sleeping on chairs. On one of the last ever days of the 'smog' the room was full of 'tramps' or 'down and outs' as they were called. The smell was overpowering and the regular readers and we staff were having great difficulty breathing so I opened the main doors and the back door. Gradually the smog drifted in and it became as cold and smoggy inside as outside. One by one with much quiet grumbling all the old chaps left. I once sadly had to ask one old man to leave and he said "It's because I smell isn't it? I almost let him stay. -
What do I do with an unwanted pallet that I have offered on EDF but obviously nobody wants? Two local builders don't want it and said pallets can be a pain to get rid of. It won't fit in our car as it is so do I just chop it up and take it to the tip. Seems a shame as it's very well made. Any advice welcome.

We have a butlers sink pond in our garden, Shortly after filling it a couple of years ago we had a frog move in. It was joined last summer by two more - they have now gone but this morning I broke the thick ice that covered the water completely to find one is still there and very active. I understood that frogs will leave water in the winter to move to cosy logs, bushes etc. Do they not hibernate and can he survive under the ice and should I continue to break it up every day? The local cats are also very interested in it's well being..

Small flock (7-8) of Redwings in a rear garden in Tyrrell Rd. just now. Feasting on Rownan berries.

What's happened to all our small birds. Nobody had used our feeders for months and just spent about 4 days in the garden and haven't heard or seen one. We usually get at least one Robin when we start digging. Plenty of larger birds. We saw 14 Magpies in Camberwell Old Cemetary a few weeks ago. Several young Green Parakeets by the pond in the park the other day. My brother in North Wales has noticed the lack of small birds too. Is this something seasonal or more worrying?
