Chains are bland, faceless and contribute nothing to the feeling of a local neighbourhood, something that's a rare thing in London, indeed and what many people do enjoy and miss I love going into Val's at the top of Barry Road, having a chat and shopping in a friendly, environment where I'm not another anonymous number I never go into Nero (simply because I don't drink coffee that way) But if I did feel like a cuppa I'd go to a place where I'm likely to build a rapport with the staff which want to be there in the long term - and not a place where a coffee shop manager, fresh out of "Upselling Overpriced Black Currant Muffins" training gives me his best McDonald's Jonny 2 star routines I suppose I'm indifferent really but if it went I wouldn't shed a tear.

Surely puking up on Peckham High Street or Walworth Road would be considered an improvement to the area?

I love the Bishop Me and the missus can be found there most Saturday afternoons after the shopping The staff are amazing, really friendly and courteous, the manager must hold some kind of weekly meeting on customer service One thing though, the food, although great in what it is, is a fairly limited menu So if you could, what would suggestions would you ask them to add? My Suggestion would be to continue the brilliant eggs benedict past the 1.00pm deadline!!! The missus reckons that one item on the menu should be rotated once a week b

What will William Rose Butchers do now with their over priced canvas bags? The letter footprint can be offset by collecting them all and carefully sewing them into kaftans and sandals -
Now, I don't want to offend anyone's sensibilities... Around 8am, on the number 12 bus there's an unfortunate (and I imagine) homeless lady who sits at the back Unfortunately, she reeks to high heaven and it gets really uncomfortable for the other passengers, even quite a few seats away It gets especially bad when the bus isn't moving, even with the windows open There's also been a gentleman with the same problem who also gets on at the start of he route at the same time My question is, is there some kind of hostel at the top of Barry road where these people stay, that kicks them out at 8am? If so they should offer their residents some kind of help with washing If there isn't a hostel what are they doing up there? Why Barry Road?

Hmmmm, this is not far from a property I'm about to purchase Says that it's not decided although it's only a first floor construction with a roof which is not the horror that I thought "three storeys" could be

All Bar One is looking for ED home/Franklins organics in LL (Lounged)

I really don't like the idea of an AB1 in the area, mainly because I don't want the area to attract under-age and/or aggressive binge drinkers Don't get ne wrong, I too am a binge drinker but am neither under-age or aggressive I love this area and I'd hate to see it's charm, variety and saftey compromised because some faceless corporations seek to exploit ED disposable income I hope people continue to support their local watering holes and food retailers b -
Giddy, if you see them give me a call and I'bring my Torque wrench...

In my experience and that of Mrs Rhode, almost every shop or service in ED is staffed with very friendly people... There are exceptions but they aren't even that bad One of the best was the guy who used to run Cheers a few months back, always happy and friendly (even when I came in all moody after a bad day at work) and he would chat and help you no end Then there's the staff in the Bishop... they are amazing, they must have some kind of rigorous recruitment procedure and ongoining training because ALL of them are examples of the best bar staff I have ever experienced anywhere in the world And the guy with the ponytail in Barry Road Stores is also very friendly Can't really think of any unfriendly staff apart from the man and woman who run the cornershop on Whatley Road/Underhill Road - you have to ask for a bag and then they hand you one with the express suggestion of "what do you think, I'M going to fill it for you" I LOVE East Dulwich !!! :)

So me and the missus decided to check out the pub quiz at the Plough tonight and have a bite The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed Then began the quiz, first section of ten questions... TV programmes OK... Next section of ten questions... Kid's TV programmes Errr... OK Followed by Showbiz Gossip, Cockney Rhyming Slang and Art & Architecture!!! Although that last one was a stretch for the MC who got the answers wrong ALl very much in the vein of the News of the World I guess you can take the chav out of the Plough but...

I own a rather nice bike but unfortunately I can't keep it in ED under lock and key and so won't risk it staying on the street over night I'm quite a calm person but this kind of thing drives me crazy Why should it be that someone works hard to buy, insure and maintain a bike only for some f**kw**s to think it's a laugh to push it over and cause damage, expense and aggravation? These people really do deserve a good kicking and beating up to within an inch of their empty lives

OK, I guess I'll just hang out outside the local Costcutter and watch the local yoots organise their own display INSIDE the shop...

Barry Road is really noisy at night with traffic I have to wear ear plugs just to fall asleep even with double glazing Moving soon... hopefully...

Where are the Bicycle racks bay things on LL?
Barry Rhode replied to PeckhamRose's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
There are some green lockers by ED station but I'm not sure how the keys work... I'm sure there's somewhere to lock a bike to near the Therapy Rooms -
Does anyone know if there is going to be an organised display in ED?
