hazelnunhead replied to Sue's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Voted for Ivy House ....well done on being short listed -
Thanks for posting this Fuschia, also noted the Red Bus stuff. I have taken my daughter on one of there workshops. Really lovely people and enjoyed it. There is also a really lovely little independent cafe very near there if anyone wants to grab a coffee or lunch. If you need to make a day of it, 5 min walk to Deptford pools .....

There is so much on in London, a good place to start is with all the museums as they run programmes, the V and A have quite a bit on, as well as locally the Horniman. Southbank usually does festivals etc You can also go to ChildrenscMuseum in Bethnal Green, easy by overland, as well as Jeffrye Museum. (All have a childrens programme) Dulwich Picture Gallery and park a good combo. Artastic, who advertise on here do art days at Jags dish and spoon (visit there facebook page) hold regular stuff including crafty cooks for pop in sessions Good option to pick up the free families magazine as well as some of the local newspapers who will also advertise. The what's on thread on this forum also advertises what is happening regularly.

Summer activities suggestions?
hazelnunhead replied to acb2013's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Meant to add that Southwark puts out a Family information Directory that lists all activities by date, ages, venues etc. you can find it online at www.southwark.gov.uk/directory. Most of what they list are free as well. Or you can try www.southwark.gov.uk/family info or call them on 0800 013 0639. -
If they have a Kindle, what about an Amazon Kindle voucher for some holiday reading. (Easy to buy and send online. Or a delivery of 4 to 6 bottles of good wine? If I stay in someone's apartment, I sometimes try and think of something they might like for the apartment.

Summer activities suggestions?
hazelnunhead replied to acb2013's topic in The Family Room Discussion
You could also try the Dish and Spoon on Cheltenham road - not far from Peckham Rye Park (little cafe, with childrens play area) .... you will meet plenty of mums/dads/carers and children there .... they also advertise lots of local things happening, and have the local magazine which also lists events/activities etc in the area. -
In case someone is wondering what to do tomorrow, the above is on, from 1 to 6. Free with loads to do, for families. Look on www.sydenhamartsfestival.com for more info ....

I have used ://www.labels4kids.com (labels for kids) - I get the ones you stick on and they have really lasted. The good thing is, if you pass any clothes on quite easy to "tear" off. The website also sells arm bands etc you can fill in childs name and phone number, which can be useful if going to festivals or crowded places in summer .... [www.labels4kids.com] (hopefully that link will work)

help! what works better than Hedrin for nits?
hazelnunhead replied to hellosailor's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I have managed to keep the nits at bay for almost two years now (which means as I type this they will infest our heads!), and use a teatree shampoo. (A bit like bluesuperted mentions above) (I will find the name and post it here, but I found it in a health shop, and it is one for avoidance of nits). I use this when I wash my duaghters hair, and it seems to keep them at bay. You can also put some tea tree oil mix in a water solution and spray on hair (I do this when the letters from school appear warning of nits) . This has been working for us. -

Brixton soft play - kids parties?
hazelnunhead replied to undertoad's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Crystals palace does some parties. My daughter went recently to a trampolining party there and loved it. She had about an hour on the trampolines, with instructors, and then a party room. Seemed really lovely. -
A whole week of "me" time - recommendations please!
hazelnunhead replied to Pickle's topic in The Family Room Discussion
http://www.spa-london.org/packages/ There is also the spa in bethnal green - quite cheap, you can spend two hours enjoying the facilities (long chairs for sleeping on) and then enjoy hoxton/east london etc. The therapists that work there are really good, and I have had the odd mini facial or half hour massage booked on after the spa time (easy to get to by overland, and a quick bus) I had some time over Easter on my own and used it to clear out/sell/donate lots of stuff, without enquiring little hands wanting to know why things were leaving the house! I think there is a book/literary festival on at the Southbank .... I second the earlier recommendation of Colombia Road flower market and Spitalfields ..... -

This might seem a little far out, but you can get the Overland to Dalston Kingston Station , and as you come out from the station on the hight street is the lovely independent RIO movie theatre. They have special saturday mornings for children, (cheap as well) as well as mid week times for babies and carers. I have always loved going there .... and they serve good coffee and lovely cake!

Dairy/Soya/Egg Free Recipes
hazelnunhead replied to theratprincess's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I did notice in both Morrisons and the big Sainsbury's - that they had dairy free chocolate snacks and bars - not much use for meals, but might help on the snack front! -
Resusable nappies - honest feedback please
hazelnunhead replied to monniemae's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I used them - found that from around 3 months they fitted better! (small daughter with skinny legs, so used disposables until after 6 weeks, and then started with reusables) I used fuzzy bunz, washed and dried quickly, and they had an inner absorband liner that went in. From the outlay of the first nappies that I bought, I sold and bought more (second hand) - so would estimate that it cost around ?200. I think the council gives you some money towards these as well. I eventually donated them to a student who had just had a baby, so there worth has not ended! I used disposables at night, and sometimes when we travelled, but would say that in the end I used them 80 - 85% of the time. I also used resuable wipes, these would get washed with the nappies, and i mainly used disposable wipes when out and about. I loved my resuable wipes! A good waterproof bag is essentail for throwing re-usables when you are out and about and want to change so that there is no leakage. When my duaghter started nursery we continued with the re-usables and just provided a small plastic container to throw them in so we could take them home every day. They were really easy to use, felt complicated to start, but once you get the hang of it (and the names of what the nappies are and what they do) really simple. Washing was easy I learnt that sunlight (hanging out when possible got rid of most stains) I would certianly look at buying second hand, as they will have hardly been used for the first six months. Good luck. -
You could try Dish and Spoon, on Cheltenham rd.

Nursery, creche in Peckham Rye - Recommendation
hazelnunhead replied to WesleyPJones's topic in The Family Room Discussion
You can try Colour Box which is off Ivydale Road. Its a small nursery, my daughter went there for a short period (before school) and we were happy with the care of the staff. -

Parking at Peckham Pulse free?
hazelnunhead replied to mammamia's topic in The Family Room Discussion
The machines hardly ever work, but I have never paid! I think that even if the machines work it is free (but restricted to four hours). -
advice needed: flying with car seat
hazelnunhead replied to verds's topic in The Family Room Discussion
For the booster seat you might want to try the bubble bum, it's an inflatable booster seat that you can deflate and inflate really easily. Minimal space needed, Or else you can get a basic booster seat cheaply from Argos. No idea about the other one, can you try and deal direct with cat hire to see if they can organise you something ..... Do you have friends or family at the other end that could organise you a car seat. -
You can see the photos if you go online. This happened to me. I think I had one tyre in the bus lane, I contested it and never heard back. So perhaps look to see what you did from the photos. The details of how to see this should be on the penalty notice. You can also contest it online.
